From my understanding dogs don’t like the taste of the oils on dove feathers, it’s takes some time to get used to, but handlers have been known to get mad and then it makes the dog not want to retrieve at all.
@ctuck30863 ай бұрын
I’ve never heard of the oils but most dogs don’t like the fine feathers of the dove. They tend to fill their mouths. My pup does pretty good as long as I keep water for him to clear his mouth out.

What you can do with the feather problem is practice with Cora with a pinecone if there’s any where your at and put feathers on it and she won’t play with them cause the pine one will hurt when her when she bites, and what barrel do you always shoot first top or bottom
@johnchristie1423 Жыл бұрын
With double's if you do not break the gun open fully the second trigger hammer does not set to be ready to fire next time. Lets hope the camera can be repaired...just consider it a hidden vet bill. Cora has it figured out well in the smell and retrives.

So I guess that field was a complete success. Fingeres crossed, I will have a similar experience this fall. Planted a half acre of bird seed that was heavy on the black oil sunflower seeds.

Just a tip from experience any new type of bird go back through the hold phase of Force Fetch or Hold Conditioning with said bird cleans up all those problems also adding a hold once she is in sight then giving a correction for hold helped cleaning up the drops in the field. You'd really get a kick out a South Carolina Dove Shoot Labor weekend is the premier holiday bar-b-que all weekend 14 acre field 12 men 6 w/ dogs and 180 birds its a cultural experience. and Cora did 10 times better than most dogs on their first dove retrieves.

How many target loads and how many bird shot bullets do you shoot a year? I ask because I'm trying to get better at shooting and I love watching your shot cam videos because it shows me how far to lead I should be leading them. Also, did you ever get professional shotgun training on how far to lead?
@ThreeTs223 Жыл бұрын
Just make it a point to go shoot every week until you are where you want to be. This stuff takes years! I’ve shot thousands and thousands of shells and still miss every now and then. As far as leads, it’s different for how fast the bird is flying and how far away it is. Just something you kind of gain as second nature over time. Hang in there if you want to be good, just spend time shooting clays etc. you’ll get it eventually
@mrsmith9079 Жыл бұрын
Forward allowance can only be taught for specific, repeatable targets. In reality it is learned through experience.

Love the video and love how the dogs doing. Me and my dad have a 2 year old pup and his biggest problem is that the first hour to hour and a half of his hunt is all excitement whether it be doves, ducks, or geese and no hunting. After he burns it out he’s golden but we struggle with him maintaining focus and obedience in the first time period. Any tips or suggestions on how to hone him in and get him focused on the hunt from the get go would be greatly appreciated as this is something we’ve been working on and trying to fix
@brucevansickle2645 Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you should hold off on retrieving and start again on basic training. Decades ago had similar experience with a young golden . Stopped hunting her and started all over again . The next season , at 2 1/2 yrs, she was ready to go. Robert Milner's "Retriever Training" may be of assistance. Good Luck!

If the gun has an inertia trigger then your malfunction at 12:55 could be the result of fairly light target loads combined with possibly not having the gun firmly shouldered - much like an inertia semiauto, an inertia trigger generally can't be limp wristed.
