I definitely agree you should see more Kurosawa. The BFI recently released a BluRay of Ikiru & I'd say it's another release by them that trumps the Criterion equivalent with a newer restoration & superior extras. They really need to upgrade Red Beard to BluRay, I think you'd both love that, it's a beautiful film.

Ozu is one of the most accessible of all great directors. His films are so sweet and gentle. He and Renoir had a love of people that shined through in all their work.

KAGEMUSHA is a good prequel to SHŌGUN miniseries. The battle at the end was very important in Japanese history. The film stars two Kurosawa regulars: Tatsuya Nakadai, always amazing, and Takashi Shimura in his final role. Shimura is probably best known for IKIRU, but shows up in many Kurosawa films from throughout his career.

If you want to know of another great recent Rashoman-style of film that I recommend. Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Monster (2023). The director has two titles in the collection currently in After Life and Still Walking.

Must be nice walking into a Barnes and Noble and going through aisles of physical media. Most Barnes and Noble's near me either discontinued or greatly reduced them to one wall. Nice Criterion haul, BTW. I'm hoping to pick up No Country for Old Men

I actually think the silent version of Floating Weeds is superior to the 1959 re-make; I think it’s better paced (being 33 minutes shorter) and I prefer the cast. Also, being an admirer of Rohmer is generally a good predictor that you will like Ozu’s post-war films, especially Early Summer, Late Spring, Equinox Flower, The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice, An Autumn Afternoon, and Late Autumn; all have Criterion releases.

Wow, didn’t realize he had that many in the collection. I’m looking forward to taking the plunge. Really hoping his films click with my sensibilities. It sounds like they will. Do you have a recommendation on where I should start?
@jamesong9408
@jamesong9408 3 ай бұрын
@@FilmsByColor Start with (1) Late Spring; then (2) Equinox Flower, (3) Early Summer , (4) The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice . (Or any order, really.) Basically, alternating Ozu's signature 'dramas' and 'comedies.' After the first two, you will know if Ozu is for you.

hey man, Im here in Georgia too (Gwinnett County)...which Barnes and Noble are you finding to have the best stock of Criterion? They eliminated CC at the Snellville B&N and the district manager said they would be shrinking stock at a lot of stores until we get to 3-5 anchor stores that have all the stock...who has had the most so far? I'm still looking to grab a few that Amazon isnt matching
