Hunting Grizzly Bear and Barren Ground Caribou in Alaska

Now setup in deep within Caribou Country, Ian Harford and Steve Wild head out Hunting Grizzly Bear and Barren Ground Caribou in Alaska.
Welcome to Hunting in Alaska - Episode Eleven
It’s day 13 of Ian and Steve’s incredible hunting trip in Alaska. After retrieving Steve’s black bear from the previous day and travelling to their next hunting destination, the team have now successfully set up camp at their new location deep within caribou country, (Click the link now to watch - • Onto Caribou Country: ... )
They will spend the next few days hunting for caribou and grizzly bear. However, a new location brings a new set of challenges that they must overcome.
There are a strong number of animals near to camp. Unfortunately, none meet the minimum requirements for harvest, so the team must move deeper into the valley.
Further up the ridge Ian and Steve spot a couple of mature bulls that are perfect to harvest.
They take the time to check out all of the options, however, these are not the only animals out grazing today.
Steve’s eagle eyes have spotted a beautiful mountain grizzly bear feeding on a berry patch high on the side of the mountain.
The bear is a mature boar, now Ian and Steve now have to make a decision... Do they take the bear or the opportunity to double tag the caribou?

This is how you give the viewers a great guidance in hunting! Excellent shooting, a genuine passion for the game and som old fashion hard work among friends. John Tuffield I used a Sauer 404 in .338 winmag. Steve used a Blaser R8 in .300 winmag. We carried the meat & skins back to camp on foot. Lots of hard work!

Team Wild TV , I put finger cots over the ends of my bbls. W a small rubber band to hold em on U dont even have to pull em off to shoot. Rubbers so thin they just blow off easy w no bullett deflection. Kteeps out trash & rain great.

What is the ball park figure for a hunting trip like this if you don’t mind asking

steyrman2 , I couldnt see an answer but knew bear guides. They usually charge $5K AFTER travel expenses for a bearstand hunt. Thick dense forests & baiting them is the ONLY way to get em out into the open up close. Know that sounds like a lot but the vast majority of the $$ is for liability insurance & setting up a bait station is hard/dangerous work. The ferns form solid walls 6 feet tall & a bear can be 3 feet from y9u & youd never know it until its on top of you. When the bears start hitting bait they stay close to defend their food & when the guides are rebaiting the hit stands theyre walking targets. Especially if Griz are workin the area. Guides only make about $1000 after their expenses/time/bait are invested.

Brandon Tagarook ,I lived Alaska. This looks like the area up near Cantwell or N of there a bit. Its N of Denali but S of Fairbanks. Not too rugged but take LOTS of mosquito dope. Fly ins are common because theres NO roads. But, With Alaska being SOOOO big I could be mistaken but that area up there is famous for its Caribou runs. . Alaskas not just another state, its another PLANET. Beautiful, but trecherous. Has a 1000 ways to kill you. LISTEN to your guides!!!

Brandon Tagarook , Could be, As big & varied as AK is its hard to tell. Ive seen similar country up near Nome too. Also seen big treeless areas just S of Fairbanks where the Caribou run. Theres a dirt road that breaks off the Parks Highway that runs E forever to "somewhere", been many years since Ive been there so memory isnt so great. DO remember a native familys car breaking down & they tried to walk out. They all died. Sucked! Troopers found their car few days after the were reported missing. If theyed stayed w the car theyed have been rescued. Country up there looks similar but it had lil patches of trees scattered about. SMALL trees, but trees. I "think" the caribou herd was the Nanilcheck herd but again that was long ago & Im not sure. The overpopulation of wolves was decimating that herd. That was during Tony Knowles reign of stupidity. A California jackass who was elected Govenor & fucked the entire state up. Banned fish wheels & that following winter many native villages starved to death. That dumb bastard & the dumdass demanazis who elected him should ALL go BACK to California & STAY there!!

For what its worth I lived AK bush for 27 years. Only got bear attacked 4 times, 2 griz, 2 big blackies. Shot the 1st griz at 10 feet w a 375 H& H mag. He was running UP A 45 degree hill from 200 Yds away & by the time I threw the rifle up he was in my face. Fixed 4 power scope almost got me killed before I "found" him in it and it was just a big brown blurr moving fast. Shot went over its head, hit spine at top of neck, went through his body diagonally & exited just above his penis. Found the 300 grain X bullet later perfectly mushroomed & a foot deep in the soft tundra. The impact flipped him over backwards & he ran 100 yds, did a big somersault, hit the ground running another 100 yds, flipped again & hit the lake & swam 25 yds before FINALLY dying. Took 2, 4 wheelers to pull him up on the shore & start processing him. He was a small bear, only 8 feet. (Small for our area, 14 footers not uncommon) 3 of his vertibrea were dust & spinal cord compleatly severed. Entire gutpack was jellow w heart/lungs compleatly turned to mush. Later, when I contacted the F&G bear experts w "How could he keep going w compleatly severed spinal cord" they told me he was 1, fully adrenalized, 2, running on sheer muscle memory. Said thats why so many hunters still got killed by heart shot griz. Theyre mad & dont know their dead yet. Can kill you before they drop. Best advise in an attack is empty your gun into em & hurry up & reload in case they get up & come after u again. If u can, Break em down" BEFORE delivering the heart shot. Shoot em through both shoulders so they cant chase u anymore. I sold that useless 375 & got a Marlin 1895 lever gun. Loaded 420 grain WFN hard cast slugs up to 2100 fps. & put an extended magazine on it for 8 round total capacity in case of a multiple bear attack. ( Mom & 3 full grown cubs.) Put Mauser ramp sights on it & could make 400 yd shots easy into 6 inch targets. NEVER ran a scope again. Lived in thick brush/treed in area. Most shots thereafter were 50-200 yds tops. Killed many bears w that gun/load. Just dropped em in their tracks! Had a 10 ft blackie charge me the following summer out in the open. It saw me @ 200 yds, let out the "death roar" & charged. Hit him at 100 yds square in the chest & he just folded & slid on his face to a dead stop. Found the slug just under the fur at his rear flank. The WFN didnt pulverize his innards like the Barnes X did but it knocked him flat w the slug through his breastbone/heart. That WFN works awesome. Killed many bears thereafter w that gun/load & it never took more than 1 shot. Loaded my 44 mag ruger redhawk w similar. 320 grain wfn pumped uo to maximum 1200 FPS. Also a THUMPER load up close. Hope this info helps if your ever in thick brush country. When the SHTF its fast & close & the levers fast follow up beats the hell out of any bolt.

dutoyboy1 Yes, if any animal overpopulated then it is not good for the surrounding ecology. When I lived in Nevada I used to assist the Big Horn Sheep Foundation with relocating sheep. There were several Mountain Lions in the area that were decimating the big horn population. Some of the sheep needed to be relocated to another area of the state. This is an example of how just a few too many predators can really affect populations of their food source.

Excellent information, I understand the need for certain predators to be sorted out but do bears cause that much damage? They seem to have a fair struggle at their lives as it is. I understand the need for population control on reserves but in the wild that has to be done naturally. I suppose I just don't like bears predators being killed for sport. Give me a warthog or a wildebeest anyday

dutoyboy1 I hear where your coming from. I have mixed feelings on the issue. I do know that on Kodiak island they need to carefully manage the bear numbers because it is such a contained and small ecosystem.

dutoyboy1 , You dont know Alaska law. ITS MANDATORY to bone out the bear & harvest ALL the edible meat too. If the hunter dosent want the meat its donated to local food banks where its happily consumed by the needy. IF cooked right, bear meat is some of the best there is. Bears are related to pigs & the meat tastes like a cross between pork/beef. AK F&G does NOT screw around either. The laws are STRICTLY enforced & prison awaites law breakers no questions asked.

I wish I knew more about Alaska and I hope to go some day, I'm glad that the meat doesn't go to waste and I'm sure the people on the receiving end of a free meal will be happy with it. I believe America looks after it's wildlife and probably manages it well enough to leave the ecology unscathed. Thanks for the information

Why do people insist on “follow up” shooters? If a hunter can’t kill it himself then don’t hunt it. If you’ve already decided your shooting sucks enough you need two shooters to kill it then don’t bother.
