It’s day eight of Ian Harford and Steve Wild’s epic self-guided hunting adventure in Alaska. Now set up in moose country, Ian and Steve have already seen plenty of bull movement in the surrounding valleys. Heading out glassing they are both confident that they’ll locate the ideal bull moose to harvest.

The exertions from packing out the two massive caribou bulls and moving camp have started to take a toll on Ian and Steve. However, they haven’t let their tired bodies dampen their spirits and are up early ready for another exciting day in the Alaskan wilderness.
The weather is spectacular and it doesn’t take long until Steve spots a moose in the distance between 800-900 yards away. They pack up their equipment and move closer towards the bull. Before they plan their approach, Ian and Steve need to be sure that the moose is in the legal requirements to be harvested.
Trekking to within 400 yards away in a more suitable position, Ian is able to identify the bull and unfortunately it isn’t within the legal restrictions. It is a positive sign of things to come; Ian continues to glass the area for signs of other animal movements.
During a brief break from glassing, Ian takes the time to explain why he chosen the Sauer 404 XTC. The lightweight and manoeuvrable rifle design also has abundance of features making it ideal to tackle the challenging conditions of the Alaskan wilds.
Glassing once again, it doesn’t take long until two mature bulls appear. Ian examines them with his Hawke Endurance ED spotting scope, trying to pick out the bulls defining characteristics whilst Steve scans the ridge for more animals. Then the monster steps into view. This huge bull is exactly what they’ve been looking for and is undoubtedly the big one they’ve seen high up on the mountain over the past couple of days.
During the pre-rut, Ian tends to use calls sparingly to spark a bull’s interest, but Steve has a couple of new tricks he’d like to try out. He lets out his most alluring cow call, which succeeds in catching the bulls attentions. However, it certainly did not like the sight of the white meat bags and runs back into the mountain.
Ian quickly grabs his pack and heads down the valley to assess their options, anxious for one last glimpse of this monster and a ray of hope for tomorrow. Unfortunately, the massive bull moose leaves the valley.
Somewhat dishearten and with daylight fading, Ian and Steve make their way back to camp. This is what hunting is all about, situations like this can be saddening, but you have to prepare that things don’t always go the way you’d hope. Tomorrow is a new day; Ian and Steve remain confidant that their moose is out there.

Hello Team Wild Tv, I have been watching your series since I was just a kid on Television and more recently I found you on KZbin as well and I really enjoy the way you guys put your hunts together. This 2020 hunting season I have a packed year with Archery hunts booked all across Canada, Filmed by Carnivore productions. We are starting the season this April with a Saskatchewan Wild Boar Hunt, Followed by some Snow Goose hunts, then off to British Columbia for a Spring Black Bear hunt in May. This August we will be going deep into the Rockies after Big Horn sheep, followed by the September Elk hunt, Next we fly down to Newfoundland to chase moose and caribou on the island during the moose rut, and we finish off the season going after mule deer and whitetails in Alberta during the November rut. Two best hunting mates can still cuss one another and I was laughing as that Bull tailed out. Ian I hope you gave Wildie grief for that and then forgave him - that’s what mates are for. And then Wildie - good for you mate for trying. I love playing around with calls etc but it’s obviously high stakes on that kind of trip. Hopefully he’s forgiven you by now x

Foss2506 I have to say it was a little tense at the time, but I just can’t stay cross with Wildy for very long - he’s a giant teddy bear and I love him like a Brother. However, next time he’s banned from touching meat bags until we’re ready to load them with moose meat!

Nice video again. Guys, can you make a how to video about the planning too? What do you need for a self-guided hunt in Alaska as a non resident. Regulations, licences etc. etc?
