I have to say, the conversation about road hunting is spot on. I work with a guy who moved to Montana from Florida and he was under that same impression that if you don't go 5 miles in, it ain't hunting. So when I took him hunting that first fall, and we did a lot of glassing and looking from the pickup, he was pretty down on it. So i challenged him. I said "We drove around today, covering a 100 miles of country, and saw 30 deer including 10 bucks, 2 definite shooters, one we put a failed stalk on." He said "Yeah..." I said "Now, tomorrow, you go park at a gate, spend all day hiking in and hunting that same area and tell me how you do." His report came back that he did just that and seen only two does in that area all day..... Its not about being lazy, it's about covering the most ground and providing yourself potential for a harvest opportunity. You want to go for a hike, you can do that anytime. If you have limited time and want to capitalize on opportunities, cover lots of ground.

Once, when I was a younger hunter, I hiked for miles all over a mountain looking for mule deer to shoot in vain. Come evening, I made my way back to my pickup. Later, back at camp, I arrived to laughter at my expense. It seems that, while I was wearing myself out hiking, a herd of mule deer were down surrounding my pickup eating the leftover hay in the pickup bed. You don't necessarily need to be in "superman" shape to hunt deer and elk. Heck, I've seen elk in people's back yards eating grass. If you can hike 2-3 miles with gun and backpack, your good to go for hunting deer and elk.

Best take away points, glass for targets, watch for droppings. And it is not always the farthest hike. I have found still moist deer droppings 200 yards from the parking area of one spot I go to. And like Harrell says, go where the deer (or whatever game animal) are. If you are seeing no signs of targets in your area, it is a good bet that they are not there.

I've elk hunted in the pinion and juniper country for the last several years and it is great area for elk and for deer. The buck deer here mostly die of old age because they are very sneaky. The elk can appear between two pinion trees and then in another step be gone never to be seen again. I've hunted and not seen any sign and then there they are. Glassing is vital. A muley buck that comes out of the pinion country is the best tasting of them all.

High plains desert. expect freezing conditions, rugged terrain. Be able to make shots to at least 200 yards. Nothing but scrub brush, no trees. Do a google map and you will see. Where I live on the front range in southern Colorado deer hunting and elk hunting are vastly different. The elk and deer are both used to the activities of man. We have a lot of burned area that was on fire in 2018 and now is a jungle of locust brush and young aspen trees. The lodge pole pine trees that died in the fire are mostly laying on the ground restricting the movements of both deer and elk. The deer handle it better than the elk. I can get a vantage point and glass my whole pasture but stalking something once spotted is near impossible because it is necessary to get so close before they are visible. Both deer and elk however are not afraid of a vehicle and only become concerned if the vehicle stops. All the deer and elk in this area grew up within earshot of the highway, county roads, etc.. Hunting all my life here I've found that none of the videos I've ever seen are accurate as far as hunting here. When hunting elk there are two things I can point out for certain, don't skyline yourself which means stay next to a tree or large bush all the time and watch your scent. Elk here don't care about the noise you make but will just walk out of the area if they catch your scent. I'll see how I do this year.

My last two bucks were very close to the parking lot. One was 250 yards in a triangular shaped plot of public land that is surrounded by private land. Nobody hunts there. The other was in a thick area About 100 - 150 yards from the lot that scurried right up to me as I was walking in to a spot over a mile from the lot. I was standing looking off of a ledge that I knew most people just walked right by. I remember a guy stopped me in the lot to chat and I was thinking "ok buddy gotta go" lol. Had he not stopped me I never would have gotten that deer. I had a chance at a buck that busted me this past season as well. He was 120-130 class. He was leaving his bed. A bed Which was on a point less than 150 yards from a busy parking lot. He had a scrape line along a gas line that ran parallel to the road. Nobody bothered to check that area, they always headed down the opposite side of the ridge. I think if you want to find whitetail at least, the best thing to do is hunt areas others don't hunt in. Observe hunters and their patterns just as much as you do deer and their patterns. I love going deep into the mountains, but, some areas hunters completely overlook. It's not always the spots far from the road or lot. I've heard that some bucks like to lay in areas where they can overlook what hunters are doing. I think that has some merit.

Some of the best hunting in Virginia is just after an early snow. I remember getting eight inches of snow during opening week one year and taking a very nice 8-pointer at about 250 yards. I could see him at a range that never would have been possible without the snow.
@kssgcasper797 Жыл бұрын
While I agree weather can be a big driver for game, you guys missed an important caveat which is that you also need to be 1000% prepared for that weather. I’ve seen folks year after year get put into serious risk and harm around the Arizona High country when they fail to plan for weather where it can be in the 70’s one day and several feet of snow, 60+mph winds, fallen tree’s and mud on forest roads deep enough to swallow even the best 4x4. So you need to have the materials and supplies to last until weather conditions improve, have self recovery tools, and be ready to bail back off the mountain or out of the dirt roads into town if conditions are too severe for you. Other than that small issue of being prepared, following weather while your out, and knowing you and your equipment’s limits pretty solid advice.

There are areas in Northern CA where it's pointless to get out of the vehicle and hike. Logging roads criss cross every 200 yards or less. I like to get out and hike but have been more successful driving at a specific speed. Too slow, and they hide. Too fast, and they run, the right speed they just stand there looking. I've seen and shot some of the biggest deer you can hike for. They aren't scared of vehicles until they're stopped. Especially in the heavily logged areas. Elk is a different game all together. I love in Montana now and am having to learn all new tactics. They say the mature bulls stay at least a mile from any open roads. Most of the roads are gated and locked where I'm hunting. We still get access but you've got to make boot tracks. Hard to do when mobility is limited

Twenty yard pin never should have been on the bow during an elk hunt. My approach has always been a maximum of two pins during a hunt, one at mid range and one at my max comfort range. For elk that was typically 30 and 50 yards.

@@WillsGoneWalkabout The issue I find is that when the big bull is standing broadside people lose their ability to think clearly and less pins make it a bit simpler. With most flat shooting bows it is pretty easy to hold a little low with the thirty yard pin rather than remember which one is thirty and which one is twenty. Same way I've seen people miss with their turreted scope because they forgot to zero it at the start of the hunt.

Road hunting has always had a connotation of laziness attached to the act. I don't care how a person gets meat for their family, so long as it's a safe shot that results in a clean, humane kill. Too many people don't become proficient with their firearm and sight or optic of choice and shooting stances. A lot of hunters take shots at ranges well beyond their skill level and/or beyond the capability of their firearm. Bullet designs are something also not given much consideration.

I find strategic areas to glass large areas from the road. I don't road hunt. There is a big difference.

Not everyone can hike miles in to hunt. Have a uncle that hunts that lost s leg and is more limited. Have others I know that are much older and struggle yo hike but still love to hunt. Don't like the way others hunt, move away from roads. That's what I prefer to do.

You just told people to practice shooting on public hunting land. That is illegal everywhere that I know. There is absolutely no target shooting on public hunting land. That means so scoping in your rifle or anything. Hunting only.

Not illegal in most forests of California. Not advised but not illegal.

I almost stopped watching after the road hunt part. This is so ignorant. Drive roads to glass 😂 ok sure guy. Then the comment about waking up at 7am..? As if that’s early? I guess this is how people hunt these days. 😒
