when these bikes have some age to them the oil pump check ball needs to be re seated. After a period of time not running, oil sumps from the oil tank into the lower end. When this happens, any excess oil is spit onto the ground when fired back up. This is common on a dry sump motor. Few people know how to properly re seat an oil pump
@HuntingHarleys11 жыл бұрын
when these bikes were built, the national speed limit was 55 MPH, so they were made to run at that speed, not 60 or 70. They break when you run at those speeds, these are antiques. Drum brakes were made for the driving and traffic of their era. They do not stop like modern brakes. They will work best if someone has the brake shoes properly arc'd to the drum, but these brakes were designed to use asbestos brake lining, which is illegal and modern replacements do not work as well.

does anyone know how fast a stock flh cruises at? i recently rode one and it was i felt like it didnt really want to go above 60mph. also, do the drum brakes usually take forever to stop?
@HuntingHarleys12 жыл бұрын
an advantage with shovels is you can work on and rebuild the oil pump right on the bike. You don't have to pull the motor to do this.
@rumpig3088 жыл бұрын
I really love the stripped down/bobbed FLH . Did you end up selling this magnificent sled?
@HuntingHarleys11 жыл бұрын
if these bikes sit, the oil follows gravity and goes into the lower end, where it pumps out once the bike is started back up. Over time, the oil gets acidic and builds a bit of corrosion on the oil pump check ball. If that happens, the sumping worsens

In the middle of a restore of my fathers one owner '79 FLH- doing a Baker six speed Trans w/ kick start option. Question I have, will it support the use of the combo speedo/tach or is that not really an option I should try?
@HuntingHarleys10 жыл бұрын
I don't know a thing about baker 6 speeds. Stock FLH's had a speedo off the transmission, so your Baker may not even allow a speedo at all. The Tach on an FLH was an option and electronic. On an FXE which had the speedo tach combination, the speedo was gear driven off a spacer that was part of the front wheel / fork assembly, but these were a Narrow Glide Fork, not an FLH style fork and again the tach was an electronic thing. There are many after market speedo / tach combinations out there. If your going with the Baker, I would look into that.

Oh, well good to know! My Ironhead sumps itself into the primary before it gets the chance to shit on the ground, which in turn shits on my back tire. I've been meaning to change the ball and spring but I just haven't felt like pulling the motor, so I just drain the primary and readd the the proper amount every week.

that is the "quick" way. Properly done, you have to re cut the seat, and then lap it in. Just like doing a valve in a head. That quick way seldom fixes the problem

Oil sumping problems are a matter of having to rebuild the check ball in the oil pump. Easy fix if you know how. That being said, rubber mount shovels are VERY undesirable, even 4 speed shovels converted to a 5 speed are not sought after.

I really do like your channel but, whenever you have the bike running it is very hard to hear you speaking. A clip on microphone would help immensely , or possibley you could re-watch the videos before posting & type in the close captioning . As viewers we all really do want to hear the great amount of Harley lore on each model that you're trying to share with us as you tend to pick prime examples of each model. It is just very difficult to hear you speak while the bikes idle . I hope that you'll find a way around this problem as you are putting out great videos on a subject that is very dear to us all. TY & wishing you many years of safe & fun riding .

sense i fell in love with shovelheads could you tell me what inches they made them in ? i know about the 80 but were the early ones smaller?
@HuntingHarleys10 жыл бұрын
the Over Head Valve twin, initially called the OHV for short, started production in 1936 as a 61 cubic inch motor. Starting in 1941, Harley introduced a 74 cubic inch version of the OHV. The original motor design of the OHV was continued with some minor design changes through the 1947 model year. 1948 introduced a complete redesign of the OHV and 1949 saw the introduction of the Hydraulic front fork on a standard production OHV model. Today, we call these Panhead's and Knucklehead's. The 61 inch OHV design was continued through the 1953 model year, and starting in 1954 only the 74 cubic motor's were made. This size motor was continued through Shovelhead production which the production of the Shovelhead line started in 1966. 1970 saw the introduction of the "cone motor" style Shovelhead. This new style was given it's distinctive shape by the discontinuation of the generator and installation of an alternator system. The same basic lower end design is still in use today with modern motor technology being added to "update" the lower end system. Starting in 1978, HD started offering the 80 cubic version on a select number of Shovelhead models AND started offering an 80 cubic conversion "kit" as an accessory item in their accessory catalog. Shovel's were offered therefor in either an 80 cubic or 74 cubic version through the 1978 - 1981 model years. Starting in 1982, conveniently the same full production year as the by back from AMF, all big twin models were made in 80 cubic versions. The size, 80 cubic, became the standard through 1982 until well past the introduction of the twin cam motor in 1999. At some point in the 2000's, the ever increasing size of the current motor line up started, due in part to the proliferation of the super stroker motor sizes of the modern chopper movement.
