Been hunting with a browning A bolt II 7mm wsm for 21 years. That I built into a long range hunting gun. She’s a killer. Was actually the first rifle I bought when I graduated highschool and been my main rifle ever since. Right now I got printing a 3 shot sub 1/2moa clover leaf at 100 yrds. Long range the 7mm carries plenty of energy with a high bc bullet. I have a 300 short mag but I love the 7mm

Only thing you are missing is a Omega 300 suppressor. I have one and I love it. It combines the suppressor with the muzzle brake and talk about tracking your shots! Also you can hear the bullet strike your target and get instant feedback on a hit or a miss.
@brady_j_miller
@brady_j_miller 4 жыл бұрын
Hey John. I haven't looked at too many suppressors since I've always just used typical muzzle brakes... but I just searched this one and I'm liking what I see! What are your thoughts on them for hunting? Added length and weight doesn't really bother me, but would it be a deal-breaker if you hunted with one and didn't put electrical tape on the end and somehow got some debris down the suppressor? Would it be somewhat easy to remove any amounts of debris from the baffles and still be confident to take an animal? Just trying to think of any downsides to hunting with one as I've never personally hunted with a suppressor.

@@brady_j_miller I use mine in Colorado and Wyoming for Elk and Mule deer. I keep mine in my cargo pocket with a Gortex heat sleeve on it and I don't even notice it. When I get to a glassing place I screw it on, I have not had any trouble with debris, I have a thread protector on my rifle that is eastly removed with the electrical tape on it. I love the fact that you can hear the impact of your shot, as you know when you connect on a animal it has a distinctive sound. Also I find that accuracy improves with it on the rifle, The Omega easily disassembles, I think there is no more risk of debris than running a muzzle break. I do have a video on KZbin that explains what I like about my Omega 300 you can check out. By the way I love your channel and have been a member of goHUNT for several years. One more thing, It is hearing safe and that is always a plus in my book!

nice rigs bud . I have some huge heavy rifles in 300 win mag 338 lapua and a few in 7 mag. I hunt idaho and on a few of my rigs had to watch their goofy weight restriction . I'm older so I don't like packing 15 plus lb rifles and a few others topping out close to 19 so I made an awesome drag bag and it has held up and protected my rigs phenomenally well

300 win mag is the standard for 30 cal magnum ballistics. With a 215 hybrid Berger(1500yds) you can reach a long way. 210 works well for game at extended range also. The one thing I wish these manufacturers would do, is make a mag that will work with increased coal. Thanks for the content, and happy hunting!

How far do you feel comfortable taking a mule deer or elk with the Hell's Canyon Speed? And how much further can you accurately shoot with the heavier-barreled Xbolts? I have a 300 Win Mag Hell's Canyon Speed and shoot factory loaded Barnes TTXS 180grain. I only feel comfortable shooting deer out to 300 yards and elk out to 400 yards, but I sure the rifle is capable of more.

Do you prefer the Xbolt Hells Canyon Speed or the XBolt Long Range Mcmillan for backpack hunting? Do you think it's worth the extra 2.5 lbs for stability? I'm 100% on board with your thinking of taking normal-weight rifles after shooting lightweight rifles for a while. Love carrying them, but I just couldn't shoot them consistently in the field. Would rather be confident in my gun and know I can make the shot than carry something lighter and be wondering about it. In saying that the 10lbs rifle isn't exactly lightweight, and with a brake should be half decent to shoot. I'm planning on getting a 300WM for my next Elk hunt which will involve a 10km hike to get into the elk area. So really debating between those two guns. Both are available at the local gun store here in Canada.

I totally get the physics of a heavier rifle. It changes the speed of recoil. People say it absorbs it but that is in accurate. You still encounter the recoil, it still has to go somewhere. That is why, for example, you should not sight in a rifle with vice to hold it. The scopes have small screws and springs and it is a system built on you taking the recoil, not the screws and springs. Otherwise, all scopes would have to be ACOG. And I have some heavy ones. Probably the heaviest is my Windham Weaponry R16SFST-308. Bipod, Magpul PRS Gen III adustable stock. 20 round mag, Vortex Venom scope. Loaded is just about 14 pounds. I could still hunt with it because I am only able to get a few miles on the public hunting land I use. The advantage is surgical accuracy to 800 yards (I put holes in the cross of x and y axis on the target paper at 100 yards, so, I call that sub MOA.) Another advantage, being semi-auto, I don't have to move my arms, the BCG has cycled and done its job, I just keep my eye in the scope. It has a mil spec trigger at 5 pounds which is fine, for hunting. Muzzle brake. I have a Mossberg MVP Long Range 308 Thunder Ranch with the adjustable stock and Venom scope. Muzzle brake. Pachmayr slip on recoil pad. 20 inch medium bull barrel. This rifle, at about 12 pounds with a 10 rd mag, puts up with shooting past 5 rounds. As in, the essence of what a varmint rifle is meant to do. Sit at the edge of a bean field and take down critters from woodchucks to feral hogs. Adjustable trigger that I never adjusted pulls 1 pound 7 6.5 ounces. I hiked with last season. I have a Mossberg Patriot .308 Win, now with a Venom scope and sitting in an MDT LSS Gen2 chassis, folding stock adapter and SCS butt stock. Also kind of heavy at over 12 pounds. It drifts as wide as 1 MOA but most of that is me. It has the lowest trigger weight at 1 lb 7.3 oz, I have never adjusted it. My new hunting rifle is the TC Compass II .308 Win. Factory non-adjustable trigger is advertised as 3-4 pounds. I did three separate runs of pulls. 2 pounds 7.7 ounces, plenty light and fine for me in hunting. No jump from trigger press. Plus, my shooting skills have improved and I have learned an important lesson about momentary calmness. I have on it a Falcon Strike hydraulic recoil pad, no bipods, I either shoot from my Bog Pod tripod or from a tree branch, Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6x-24x/ 50 mm FFP scope, 5 round rotary mag. Loaded weight with sling, 9 pounds 7 ounces. Smallest group is 1/4 MOA out to 3/4 MOA, averaging 1/2 MOA. After 40 rounds of not letting anything cool down. And the difference between cold bore and hot bore is less than 1/4 MOA. And so, that is why this is my hunting gun and the low weight is great, too. And, with such a small spread, I could take a long shot, if I have calculated the wind correctly. Distance is not a problem, that is just a matter of gravity. The wind, however, is a fickle mistress.

I'm excited to see how it performs. But at the same time, not sure this is the best conditions to try to burn more components and test things out with all these shortages. I originally acquired two 8 pound jugs of N570 during this crazy shortage (one last summer and one about a month ago). I might keep one jug to test, but I'm most likely going to sell one 8 lb jug to a friend who needs it for his 28 Nosler badly. So if you know anyone who has an unopened 8 lb jug of H1000 or even a 5 lb jug of Blackhorn 209... I'm all ears :)

The rifles you use are real nice and the .300 win. mag. is one of my favorites. In fact it is the only mag. rifle I kept once I found the .35 Whelen. I don't take shots over 400 yards, I'm pretty old school. If I can't get within 300 yards I'm not much good at hunting. I have hunted in all kinds of weather and situations, because of that I have come to the conclusion I will never buy or have another rifle built that does not have open sights on it. For one I just think the firearm manufacturer is being cheap not putting open sight on a rifle and if weather is a problem I can always remove the scope and use the sights. A rifle with a really nice quarter rib rear sight and a good express banded sight on the front can make the rifle. A good example is Rigby Highland Stalker.

Appreciate you watching the video, Curtis! I've been running the Stone Glacier Sky Archer bag on their Xcurve frame for a long time and for me, it has a great balance of all the features I love! Been a great backpack for week long rifle hunts with all my camp and gear. Plus I've even used it on some day hunts and just compress it down. With that said, I do think for the 2021 season that I'm going to purchase a Stone Glacier Sky Guide 7900 bag only and put it on my Xcurve frame. I purchased a Swarovski BTX late this fall and am waiting for a 115mm objective to get in-stock to buy. So my backpack is going to get a little heavier this fall, but I'll gladly add the weight if it means I can find more mule deer. Hope you had a great weekend!

I prefer a light gun for backpacking. Also im not taking long shots like you are. If its further than 350 yards im getting closer. We all owe it to the animals we hunt to make a clean quick kill. I've seen bucks with their front knee blown off from shots taken to far that should have been. My 2 cents

Eh boss, not trying to bust your chops but you may want to drop a comment that the Razor Gen II is 4.5-27, not 6.5-27 as you stated in the video. Nice rifles.

Hey Josh. Brady here responding to you. Sorry about that. I'm definitely not perfect. The past year was a busy one in terms of building rifles for different people and all the scopes I've looked at and used are starting to blur. But you're right, it's 4.5-27 and I misspoke. Best of luck this year!

I was thinking similarly. My rifle set up is right under 7.5 lbs with amo, scope, bipod, titanim brake, and sling. I mean Brady is the man I aint trying to hate but 10plus lbs as a light weight platform? I have a buddy with the Hells Canyon and scope and its right at around 7 even.

@@Joel_Unboundmy friends like to poke fun at what I consider light for a rifle all the time too haha. Then they also mention this must be why I usually try to get my complete backpack weight relatively lightweight and weigh out all my gear and go stoveless to attempt to save a little more weight... just so I can justify carrying a big rifle, all my camera gear and big optics. Glad you checked out the video and hope you have a great weekend.

@@brady_j_miller and here you politely passed on telling me to put some meat on my skinny @$$ and then I wouldnt have such an issue hauling weight around the hill! ;) And I am rather tall and lean. Yeah I do admit I run a pretty extensive pack for safety etc including smoke grenade. And while I prefer a lighter rifle I didnt set out to make a sub 7.5lb set up. Its just what I ended up with. But I do love it and its my attempt to get to a one gun solution if such exists. Cheers and keep doing what you do!

What is that bag cheek piece? Would it hold my slip on recoil pad/spacer?
@brady_j_miller
@brady_j_miller 3 жыл бұрын
That cheek rest bag is made by Triad Tactical and it's their modular stock pack design. I would assume it could hold a spacer, but the nice part about the Triad Tactical version is the spacers they use have velcro sewed in, so you can just add or remove them to get a fully custom fit.

This video makes me not feel so bad about my 10+ lb. hunting rifle. But I still kind of do. I'm glad I have some lighter ones and sometimes wonder if I should just sell my heavier one. Will I ever really use it? My lighter weight rifles don't prevent me from making a good shot. Watching my impact? Not likely. I just hunt responsibly and with respect for the animal to overcome problems with that. Speaking for myself, if I have to be able to watch my impact to be able to correct and hit the animal I'm hunting, I'm shooting too far. I also have long range precision rifles that are heavier but I'm not going to hunt with them. To each his own. Unity in standing against the democrats is way more important than nitpicking others' hunting styles.

I like you am a huge 30 Cal fan. The 300 Win Mag and 308 Win can handle just about anything. The 300 Win Mag and 7.62x51 have proved their worth in the US Army and Marine Corps for decades, both in combat and long range competition. These cartridges have taken many a terrorist out at extreme distances. I refuse to get caught up in all the 6.5mm hype. Yes, it’s a great long range low bc round availability isn’t there. I can think of nothing more useless then a 6.5mm chambered rifle in a sh_t hits the fan situation. You won’t be able to find this round or it’s components anywhere.

Still a great pump gun even though it is mostly plastic, kzbin.infoUgkxh4su9YgU1tWmjikirWcKJbjsFLEU62Bc but with care it will last a long time. It would be neat if Crosman would make a commemorative version of this with real wood stock, but of course it would weigh more and cost more, but hey, it would be cool. The included scope is more of a toy, but it does work for backyard plinking. I prefer to use pellets for greater accuracy, but BBs are just as good for plinking. This is not a Red Ryder folks; fully pumped it is 3 times the power of a Red Ryder and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Be safe out there.

Plenty of hunting happens when you least expect it. Those rifles look like a good deal if you find a ridge that gets the first light each morning but it’s 750 yards away. But I don’t carry a rifle like that other than at the range because of off hand shooting. Wish you held out each one standing. Not what they were built for. Still pretty guns nonetheless

Try the 300 PRC. It’s better than the 300 win mag. It will stabilize longer heavier 225 grain bullets with a higher BC and SD that will drift less in the wind on longer shots.

What do all you guys think about shooting a game animal at over 400 yards? I understand equipment is much better and a lot of guys can make a 600 yard shot with the optics that do the thinking for you, but is it ethical? Shouldn't we hunt closer? Don't the animals deserve that respect? Or is it just about filling a tag and likes?

I regularly participate in 500 meter fly shoots, using a heavy, single shot rifle optimized for one thing - long range shooting (trying to hit the image of a fly on the target from 500 meters). Scoped with a 10-60 x60 Sightron scope. I still get fliers and occasional 8"-10" misses despite relatively controlled and ideal conditions. This experience has caused me to give up any plans I had at shooting animals past 400 meters.

My truck speedometer goes past the legal speed limit up to 120 mph. Doesn't mean I have to drive that fast. Same goes for a rifle, just because I have a 20 MOA rail and am capable of shooting long range, doesn't mean I will on an animal or have to shoot long range on an animal.
