📜 History of Hunting The Pride of Germany: The Bismarck, Part 1
During World War II, the Bismarck was the pride of the German navy - and the nightmare of Great Britain. It was enormous, overpowered, and a constant threat to the seas. So when they got word that the Bismarck had mobilized, the British raced to stop it.

You seem like a nice person. Here is a chocolate cake recipe for you: Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups sugar ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 teaspoons baking powder 1½ teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon espresso powder 1 cup milk, buttermilk, almond, or coconut milk ½ cup vegetable, canola oil, or melted coconut oil 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup boiling water Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Recipe Instructions Preheat oven to 350º F. Prepare two 9-inch cake pans by spraying with baking spray or buttering and lightly flouring. For the chocolate cake: Add flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt and espresso powder to a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Whisk through to combine or, using your paddle attachment, stir through flour mixture until combined well. Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla to flour mixture and mix together on medium speed until well combined. Reduce speed and carefully add boiling water to the cake batter until well combined. Distribute cake batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick or cake tester inserted in the center of the chocolate cake comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 10 minutes, remove from the pan and cool completely. Frost cake with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.

A lot of the best fiction is based on history anyway. Game of Thrones, for example. So much borrowed from the war of the roses, and the Germanic courts of 1800's Europe. Anyway, I agree. History is often more interesting - and stranger - than fiction. And I get a bigger thrill reading about a real person who did something heroic, than I do reading about Aragorn doing something heroic, and I do love Lord of the Rings.

For those in the comment section bickering about Bismarck's status as the world's largest battleship: When she was sunk, in May 1941, she WAS the largest and most powerful operational battleship in the world. Some others had a greater displacement, larger guns, or longer physical dimensions, but none exceeded her in more than any single category and she was far and away the most generally capable battleship design in service in 1941. Yamato and Musashi would obviously take all of Bismarck's titles away from her, but neither had yet been completed in May 1941, despite Yamato having been launched several months earlier. British and American ships exceeding her size and power would come along as well, but not for several years. Tirpitz lived long enough to be outclassed. Bismarck didn't.

The Hood was a Battlecruiser and while its belt armour was increased to an adequate level when it was still on the construction yard following Jutland (1916) by ww2 the Hood was pretty much outdated and thanks to here thin deck armour was extremely vulnerable to plunging fire that was extremely rare in ww1 but thanks to improvement in ship artillery and fire control ranging became a real serious threat to naval warships.

howard baxter Only because Iowa was never used for her intended purpose (which was surface action against enemy capital ships that may attempt to attack American carriers). Iowa sank only one ship during her entire career, a mere training cruiser, and even than that ship had to be spared from aircraft carriers just so Iowa’s crew could get some experience. That’s a pathetic combat record for a ship specifically built to kill other capital ships. As with the Yamato-class, Iowa was obsolete even before being launched due to the rise of airpower, and despite being the most advanced of the end-generation battleships, she proved to be a colossal waste of resources that shouldn’t even have been built in the first place. Surviving a war when you never actually did your job isn’t really impressive.

The Internet is saying the Yamato's sister ship "Musashi" was the largest ship ever built, just barely squeaking past it's sister. But I think we're calling the Bismarck the "largest" for this series due to it being, at the time, the largest battleship on Earth.
@braith117
@braith117 7 жыл бұрын
Musashi and Yamato were a bit different. Yamato was built as a gunboat while Musashi, build as a flagship, had 2 less secondary turrets to accommodate her more extensive command and control facilities.
@Schnittertm1
@Schnittertm1 7 жыл бұрын
Even then it would be wrong, as Bismarcks sister ship Tirpitz also had been commissioned several months by the time Bismarck was sunk and it was the same size bulk wise, but a bit heavier. If we go by ships launched and undergoing fitting and sea trials, then both Yamato and Musashi would qualify, as they had both been launched in 1940, though it would take until December 1941 until Yamato finished fitting and sea trials and until the beginning of 1942 for Musashi to complete this stage and be commissioned. Anyway, the largest commissioned battleship at the time of Bismarcks sinking was its sister ship, the Tirpitz, not by much, but it was.
@VRichardsn
@VRichardsn 7 жыл бұрын
Giving Extra History the benefit of the doubt, the Bismarck was the largest warship in the world in early 1941, because the Yamato wasn´t completed yet (it would be comissioned in late 1941) Although if we get picky, we can say by the stage reached by Yamato´s construction in early 1941 it already surpassed the Bismarck, being so heavy.

Hood and Prince of Wales were battlecruisers, not battleships, a distinction that will be made disastrously important very soon. They may have been longer, but they were lighter. Here's something for the Lies episode: ships are usually referred to as feminine using 'she' or 'her', but the Bismarck was one of the only ships referred to by Germans as masculine. It was independent before WW1 and declared war on its own accord, the Empire could not force it to do anything because it no longer had control. So what the fuck are you talking about? Canada shares the British Queen but that is it, it is still independent.
@SecretOwl2023
@SecretOwl2023 7 жыл бұрын
By the numbers, Canada contributed roughly $4.7 billion to the UK while the United States contributed $31.4 billion. While Canada gave proportionately more relative to their GDP, the fact remains that U.S. contributed far more than Canada did, and that margin is even greater when you add the total contributions the U.S. gave to the USSR and China as well ($50.1 billion). So it is not an "American re-telling" to say U.S. supplies were more pivotal in the war effort. I am not trying to cheapen Canada's contributions to the war, but it irks me when people use anti-American terms like "American re-telling" so as to suggest a malicious or ignorant intent where none actually exists.
@basicfailure101
@basicfailure101 7 жыл бұрын
You realise I talk of Canada giving more proportionally to show that we remember how much of a sacrifice the Canadian people made, and how relatively it was a greater one than the US made (ie. it cost them more)? and please, don't try and tell me that no distortion of history ever takes place in America, because I will just laugh at you if you do.

This isn’t just a “Buy the way, play WoWarships” tacked onto the end of an unrelated video, but an entire series on a very interesting topic sponsored by a related product. In may of 1941, the war had just begun. The Germans had the biggest ship, that had the biggest guns. The Bismarck was the fastest ship that ever sailed the sea. On her decks were guns as big as steers and shells as big as trees. Out of the cold and foggy night came the British ship, the Hood. And every British seaman he knew and understood. They had to sink the Bismarck, the terror of the sea. Stop those guns as big as steers and those shells as big as trees. We'll find the German battleship that's makin' such a fuss. We gotta sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us. Yeah hit the decks a runnin', boys and spin those guns around. When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down. The Hood found the Bismarck and on that fatal day. The Bismarck started firing fifteen miles away. We gotta sink the Bismarck was the battle sound. But when the smoke had cleared away the mighty Hood went down. For six long days and weary nights, they tried to find her trail. Churchill told the people "put every ship to sail." Cause somewhere on that ocean I know she's gotta be. We gotta sink the Bismarck to the bottom of the sea. We'll find the German battleship that's makin' such a fuss. We gotta sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us. Yeah hit the decks a runnin', boys and spin those guns around. When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down. The fog was gone the seventh day and they saw the morning sun. Ten hours away from homeland the Bismarck made its run. The Admiral of the British fleet said turn those bows around. We found that German battleship and we're gonna cut her down. The British guns were aimed and the shells were coming fast. The first shell hit the Bismarck they knew she couldn't last. That mighty German battleship is just a memory. "Sink the Bismarck" was the battle cry that shook the seven seas. We found the German battleship t'was makin' such a fuss. We had to sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us. We hit the deck a runnin' and we and spun those guns around, yeah. We found the mighty Bismarck and then we cut her down. He succeeded Admiral William Whitworth in 1941, so some would perhaps blame it on a "blind/strict" chain of command, but prior to Holland's promotion he was apparently involved in the finding of a code book on a german weather vessel (Lauenburg) that was crucial for translating German communication (Enigma). So maybe it was something of a reward? He had partaken in larger sea battles, but never truly distinguished himself as an exceptional commander of the sea. However, I only did a (really!) quick serach on google (diva document) and an even quicker glance through some of my books; so please, do argue against if you will! I'm sure to have missed a lot of details.

The Lysanders were too vulnerable and short-legged to even reach the Skagerrak Straits between Denmark and Norway. Practically the whole kriegmarine navy is just the bismarck itself along with subs.and when that ship sank the kriegsmarine is practically under the waves, litterally with the subs

Only one tiny nitpick: I'm sure that this will be addressed in "Lies"as a matter of simplifying and saving explanation time, but while it is traditional for ships to be referred to with feminine pronouns, in the case of Bismarck, it seems the male pronoun was used. As written by one of the surviving officers,Lieutenant von Müllenheim-Rechberg, in his book "Bismarck: A Survivor Story," fhe commanding officer, Captain Ernst Lindemann, addressed the crew and: "After a short pause, Lindemann added: "One more thing. In the future, I would prefer to hear people on board use the masculine form when speaking of the Bismarck. So powerful a ship as this could only be a he, not a she." I resolved to accede to his wish and, although I have had a few slips of tongue, have done so ever since."
