@@robjohnson9270when you run you are pushing up against gravity as well as away from the ground to move forward, when you dive you direct potentially marginally more force forward and less upward hence the falling. so technically there’s more forward movement and no upward movement, like in a free body diagram. and as others said it was likely due to the appearance that he was stumbling also, a prone body has less air resistance than a standing body when traveling forward. not that it makes any difference in the last fraction of a second in the race

Races are not done by your feet, hence why sprinters will dip their head at the line.
@hyperfirefly58794 ай бұрын
It’s based on when your chest/torso crosses. So if you pause between 0:40 - 0:41 you can see the guy in lane 4’s chest crossed first before the guy in lane 5. Most sprinters do lean forwards at the end of the race! But you have to be careful about the timing of it/how much you lean since it could slow you down! It’s usually not ideal to fully dive since that’s time spent not being propelled by your legs, you actually start decelerating in a dive. And also even besides that, you can get hurt, tracks really aren’t made for that kind of thing. Especially if you’re a professional, it’s not worth the risk. It ended up working out for this guy though!

Someone has clearly never been a serious running competitor. Falling over the line could easily be a sign of your legs giving out when you try to stop because they have nothing left, it could be a delayed reaction to the response of someone else’s lean (or dive in this case) where you give a desperation attempt a little too late because you’re tired as hell, or honestly any number of things. An idiot? Nope. That would be you.
