"If you crank it faster, does it play faster?" I honestly took a full second to realize how ridiculous that question is. I guess a lot of people associate the instrument to a music box.
@ShakerGER5 жыл бұрын
I mean if you plug faster a guitar makes more notes... If you rapidly crank back and forth you basically crank faster AND play faster. Same iwht the bow of a violin. but you have to also do it fast backl and forth faster in one direction it only makes louder.

As someone who knows nothing about instruments, I totally thought that's how it worked...

@@PattyGurdy I guess the response to that is "oh, well my last baby broke when I dropped it so now I always carry an emergency backup" ;-).

The “what is this??!!” almost killed me, followed by “where do you pump the air?” When people think they know something, then try to explain looking like an orchestra conductor on drugs, and generally just fail. Great video, and although it clearly makes for funny anecdotes, I’m sure it’s eye-rollingly tedious!

What happens if the crank turns wrong, plays the song backwards? lol Die Brille steht dir!
@Milamberinx6 жыл бұрын
That's what happens if I run my violin bow backwards, so it makes sense c.c I like Patty's old Scottish lady. I can almost see the blue hair. I agree, the glasses suit her very well.

"wait, hurdy gurdy people can crack jokes too and not be always ol' medieval moody?" Yea, I learnt that from you Patty! Love from a guitarist :)

It's such a great instrument! There's something about that first opening drone when a hurdy gurdy starts playing that I find really haunting/beautiful.
@dronemusick7 жыл бұрын
"A dog" would be a valid answer to the question whats inside the bag (chien/buzzing bridge) :3 Also, people assuming you're playing medieval music just because you play the Hurdy Gurdy is basically the "Gurdy-equivalent" to assuming all Bagpipe players play the scottish Great Highland Bagpipes. :)
@jasonsummit18857 жыл бұрын
Or if you play accordion, and everyone assumes you only play polkas.☺

I laughed Patti. Yep those old street musicians often had a monkey on a chain that would collect your pennies, but I think more with a barrel organ. It would be interesting if you set up and played live in a busy place like a railway station to to see the reaction of passers-by on video. Love John xx

There's another type of 'Hurdy-gurdy" that was used on the railroads, long ago....it was a simple platform on wheels with a teeter-totter crank, a couple of workers would pump to make the cart go down the tracks to get to a work site. No music involved, though. I like your type of hurdy gurdy better. LOL

@5nowChain53 жыл бұрын
I just realized why all the fans love your vids, you look into the camera like your coming on to it/them! Its the focal point you are looking at. you are looking at the CCD, which to the viewer looks like you really are looking deep into their eyes. On Broadcast TV the presenters are looking at a different focal point as they have an autocue in front of the camera. ok i admit it, you are very easy on the eye ;)
@Dholmes10227 жыл бұрын
Just because the Hurdy Gurdy was a Medieval instrument, it doesn't mean it only plays Medieval music. Many instruments can find it's place in the modern music world, it just needs artists willing to make the shift.
