Love your performances! I've learned German from a very young age, although being from the U.S. and a fairly remote area, they're aren't many German speakers around me. Unfortunately my speech has become fragmented over the years while also trying to learn 4 other languages so I can travel in the future. Tangent being over, I've always loved Central European and Northern/Nordic music and instruments as most of my family is from there (Irish/Norse) Anyway, here's to much prosperity and fortune for you in the future!

Being a native-born Texan, I learned at an early age to accept the idea that _everyone_ - myself included - has an accent and a dialect of some sort. The other 49 states habitually remind us that the Texan accent is a rather unique thing, and we ourselves acknowledge the Texan _dialect_ every time we use words, pronunciations, phrases or figures of speech that nobody else says (ie. "y'all" or "ro-DAY-o" or "Remember the Alamo"). ;-)

I haven't successfully built one yet, the wheels been a bastard to cut without a proper workshop, but I've been working on a kind of simple gurdy that might work against the tuning problem. Specifically, one that can play chromatically on all it's strings, plus maybe one drone that can still be adjusted on the fly, but less so. Specifically, I made the design to primarily use 4 fingers, with the strings tuned like viol family instruments, partially because I'm a violinist, and partially because those are really common ranges and tunings, which makes sheet music easy to come by and make use of, so long as you can improvise the "double stops". To achieve this, you'd grip the instrument like a tagelharpa rather than a normal gurdy. All of the keys would also be the same length regardless of the string, specifically so that you can use your thumb like a slide, adjusting the "open string" on the fly, and bringing the drone string, whatever that was tuned to, with it, with said drone having a single key at each different hand position. If I hadn't been working with a small medieval style box case that didnt have enough room, I'd have included a trompet with switch tuning, like you get on harps. That being said, I think I'm not good enough with the fiddly work yet to make the key box, so I'll probably have my next attempt be a fretted gurdy and be done with it.

Hello from an Irish man in Germany (Darmstadt). I like the sound of your music and I think the Gurdy would definitely fit in with Irish music (pre-organised tunes obviously). Most Irish traditional music sessions stick to G and D (and their related minor keys), with the odd tune in A and the odd accidental. A doesn't work on whistles or keyless flutes (I think the same is true of keyless uilleann pipe chanters), which is part of why there's a big bias for G and D. We flute players just drop the notes we don't have, sometimes, so I would think going with G or D would work, and dropping the C/C# as needed?

Hello Patty, just throwing an idea out there for you, on having the Hurdy Gurdy set up in one tuning...and wanting to play in another tuning while on stage...have a second or third instrument made and une it to the favoured other tunings. I do this with several violins ...as a fiddler most of us play only in a few keys( to use our open strings)...so for me keeping a few other fiddles in other tunings... just one note up... on all strings and one note down on all strings on another instrument ...makes the keys of C, E, and F as easy as G, D and A...but that is the fiddle. With the fiddle vs. the violin...we have other strange tunings as well that we play with, where as violists stick with the GDAE tuning. Having back up instruments are always a good thing... takes the stress off having a one of a kind instrument and touring. Anyhow...I very much enjoy your videos, you skills are great...you are very entertaining. Wish you much luck and will watch to see if you ever get here to Japan.

Complaining about summer is typically German. Though, if it doesn't rain in Britain, then they start sweating too... I'm the odd one as I considered emigration because of the climate. Temperatures below 20°C seem to severely affect my immune system and I can feel all my joints despite being relatively young.
@rushthezeppelin6 жыл бұрын
All you Europeans do not know the meaning of heat until you come to Texas or the American Southwest. It seems that Germany is hitting mid 80s with fairly low humidity right now (according to a google search on Berlin weather) while we are easily high 90s/low 100s (like 35c-38c) with pretty bad humidity here in Texas.
@edi98926 жыл бұрын
rushthezeppelin In Austria our worst summer days were 40C. However, I found 30C far worse with high humidity. Still, such conditions are relatively rare.
@rushthezeppelin6 жыл бұрын
Agreed humidity is what makes heat unbearable. I used to live in AZ and we would have days that would hit up to 47c in the summer but they were much more bearable than a 37c day here in Texas with over 50% humidity, especially if you wear sun protective clothing. The only thing you have to watch for with dry heat is making sure you are keeping up with your water intake since your sweat evaporates almost instantly and you don't have so much of an obvious representation of how much water you are losing.
@edi98926 жыл бұрын
I'm currently in Switzerland and we are approaching 30°C and have currently 27°C and 60% humidity. This week every day was warmer and more humid than the day before and we're still far from the hottest month... just when I said it was a rare thing... either way, we have now daily storms in the evening. It's totally weird.

I love kalimbas! I was browsing an exotic instruments store once, on vacation with some friends in Vancouver, British Columbia late 90s. I was in my mid 20s. I purchased a small African kalimba on a whim. I got pretty good coming up with melodies on the thing and would take it on camping trips and other outings. I don't know what happened to it .. I must have lost interest. Now I cherish every single instrument that comes into my possession and have started a small collection (guitar, banjo, mandolin, violind). I have decided to buy another kalimba. BTW I absolutely love your channel and your playing! I have become obsessed with the gurdy and you are an absolute virtuoso!
