Its great to hear the technical parts, and you made it informative which kept it interesting. I was looking to buy one (I live in the UK) and as its a niche instrument, I accepted it will be expensive, so thanks for providing the cautions on the Etsy version. It would be brill to know if there's a good value for money option which will be reliable. I'm not looking for cheapest but would still like to spend as little as possible, without buying an inferior product (that budget sweet spot). Would be nice to see future videos on more technical things and explanations of how it works, and why parts are made a specific way :)
@Folkskelet4 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Yes, there definitely are reliable and more affordable options. I have made a big list of decent gurdies under 2K, that is in the Hurdy gurdy community on Facebook. In the UK I totally recommend Chris Allen & Sabina Kormylo. They are the makers of my hurdy gurdy and they are very, very good. Their instruments are very refined, light and sweet players. The symfonie (medieval box shaped) starts at 1200,- pounds and their other gurdies start at 2000,- pounds I think. I can imagine those numbers look a bit terrifying though, so have a look at the other list and see if there is something you really love. It is a big stack of money regardless, so take your time. I am planning other videos so I'll see if I can do a technical deep dive :)

Came across this as a fan of Brian's but also as someone potentially interested in buying one of these instruments. What would you say is a good one to look for, since you say the one he has is not a good one to pick?
@Folkskelet4 жыл бұрын
That actually depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend. It is a non standardized instrument so there is a lot of variety. What I would recommend is reserving a budget of around the 2.5K to 3K ballpark and shop for a forever gurdy. Get a GOOD and not too complicated gurdy from a really reputable maker. A proven model that you really like. Really research it and see if you and the maker click, see what other players think. 5 or 6 strings. It will not be too overwhelming but complete enough to be a joy to play at any level. Take good care of it and it will barely deprecate if at all. That way you have an amazing handmade gurdy for life and if you don't take to it or if you want to sell to reinvest in an upgrade, you will barely lose any money because the demand for well made and not too costly gurdies is really high. A nerdy gurdy can be good to dip your toes for a small fee and can be a good alternative to survive the waitlist. If you build the kit yourself, you can be done for a couple hundred. You can also do it for a budget in the 800 to 2000,- if you are willing to compromise and take a lot of care because that is the price range where items like this Etsy gurdy sit. I made a long list of gurdies under 2K, it is in the Hurdy Gurdy community on Facebook. Best thing to do is be patient and really research. I hope that helps!

I'm learning an instrument (flute) for the first time and I made a poor choice buying it... it was actually helpful to notice that the trouble I had playing it was down to the instrument, not me! So I didn't blame myself for struggling. I hope anyone who watches this who had a similar situation feels reassured in the same way, and I hope Brian can get a better hurdy gurdy if he's interested in learning! Great video :-)

Thank you so much! Yes, having an instrument that does not work properly makes the learning process so difficult. :-(

So if one did hypothetically want to get their hands on one, where would be the best place to buy one? What is a reasonable price for a beginner one?

this was really cool! I am a fan of brian's so that's what brought me here but I have also played in symphony orchestras that have brought in solo hurdy gurdy players so they've been on my radar, so to speak. I love the insight into his playing and compliments on his melodies. Very impressed you could spot dorian so quickly, I aspire to that aural skill level :)

This is a great reaction. The notes she made about the construction of the crank could easily be addressed. it seems easy to replace the nob and use a flatter nut. But I am neither a musician or a craftsman, so I really have no idea :P

I had only seen his video (I’d never really heard a hurdygurdy before), so when you started talking about how his sounded off I was like ‘what it sounds great’ until you played the same riff on yours.

When you said technical I thought it was going to be longer. I actually like the tech part of instruments like the Hurdy Gurdy and the Crwth (a stringed Welsh instrument with 'w' as a vowel). For example, not how to play but when you do play when happens. P.S. YT doesn't like the spelling of Crwth and Hurdy Gurdy.

I should make more technical deep dive videos... 🤔

No shade detected, in fact some really solid advice for someone else looking to buy. That point about the hand clearance around the nut seems like a key point when looking to buy as a beginner.
