Not that it's of any importance, but in the book Dune by Frank Herbert, a futuristic instrument called a baliset is described. For years I thought it was an entirely fictional instrument, a sort of cross between a piano and a guitar with a spinning wheel within it, but it just occured to me that the hurdy gurdy is almost precisely identical. Not sure how I feel about that.

i dont get the byzantine jokes can someone explain?
@VividlyVindicated4 жыл бұрын
@@yiayiosmalakas9076 Iirc, back in the medieval times when Byzantium was still around, Byzantium often went to war with the Arabian countries to their east. I believe the struggles went back and fourth, with Byzantium winning some wars while the Arabian countries won others, causing territory to shift back and fourth depending on the war. There was a lot of hostility between the two sides, and lot's of people died. Although I'm not entirely sure, I think the point of Blueberry's comment is that the specific timestamp they provided gave them an overall feeling analogous to Byzantium soldiers, deep in Arabian territory, clashing head on with Arabian soldiers. That is to say, the music would fit with such a scene if it were played out in a movie or something. I could be wrong, but that's my interpretation of their comment. Hurdy Gurdys start at about 1500-2000 € for a very simple one with two strings and one drone. If you're interested, I can send you some websites/ adresses- I paid about 4000€ for mine and it has 4 strings/ 2 drones& capo/ 3 bourdon strings :)

AstaraNightcloud OOF! Now that's well expensive! On the plus side I just had a look and realised I have a fully sampled one of these in East West Quantum Leap's "Ra" plugin collection. Gonna have to see if I can get that wheel speed tied to a MIDI controller and get some cool sounds out of it.
@AstaraNightcloud10 жыл бұрын
sonicwingnut Yeah they're really expensive because there are only very few people who play these and it takes a lot of knowledge and experience to build a good one! Here in Germany, there are about a handful of professional hurdy-gurdy makers, in France there are maybe a few more (the hurdy-gurdy is traditionally used in French folk music). Here's a playlist with some more stuff: kzbin.info/aero/PLlBHttLz6H0KLSOwAO4E5Ted8UFLvIMuw (there are also some musicians who use a loop station and similar electronic devices with their gurdy, which is really cool)

The reason being is that as time went on the hurdy gurdy slowly started to fall out of favor with people, to the point that the only way you can see and hear one was in the hands of drifters and beggers, to the point that in the germanic speaking areas the people that used it where called, and you will have to fact check me on this one, lierman, and the conenectin was rather negative . Only reason it even survived was cos of the french aristocracy liking it cos it sounded to them like they where having a simple peasant life. Tho the hurdy gurdy has had a come back in the last 60 or so years also do to the french bringing it back and spreading it ones more

This particular hurdy gurdy isn't 1000 years old though. It's a modern version of a medieval instrument which originated about 1000 years ago. By that logic you should be leaving comments like this to every video where electric guitar is used. (Actually guitar like instruments are much older than 1000 years, more like at least 4000 years)
