My take on the lyrics - it's probably about the first pilgrims leaving England (or Europe in general) and heading for North America, running away from all the troubles in their old life. The talisman itself appears to be a magical compass or possibly a "lucky charm" of some sort, pointing them exactly where they need to go. Of course, most of them don't make the trip, including the storyteller who clings on to life just to see the shores of the New world. It appears that he dies of scurvy - "those that didn't die in storms, the scurcy rest did slaughter".

I like how they change rythm to their trademark galop so fluently. Also this is the only song where the first chorus came up after almost 6 min and it still works. This is the most challenging song for Bruce. On live version he just stand in one spot to focus on singing, which is unusual. Still I recommend to give a second chance to the other songs on the album. Cheers!

It's not only the best song of the album but one of Iron Maiden's finest. The song is about a ship fleeing from Britain and heading to "The New World" (America) as in the line {Westward we go}, and the incredible and horrific journey of the ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Great reaction 👍 😈Up🎤🤘 The 🎸🔱 Irons 🥁

😂 hope it’s a happy ending. I believe it’s Europeans taking the chance of a new life in the new land (America). The Talisman I’ve heard is a compass/navigation device, but could be a cross or something like it. This song helped me with leaving everything behind with a move to the US - we can jump on a plane, nothing like those journeys of the past. Oh, and don’t worry about the muppets - your channel, you react to what you want. Enjoying your Maiden journey myself I am.

I love this Maiden journey, and you're a cool guy. i will suggest some bands/music for you to react too occasionally purely because i want your channel to grow so you can earn a living from it.

This is the story of those who left Plymouth (or Southampton, depending on who you speak to), in my native UK to sail to America aboard the Mayflower in the 16th century escape religious persecution from the church of England because they were protestants. The journey took 66 days. Aboard were 102 passengers plus 30 crew. The ship that accompanied the Mayflower, name The Speedwell, began to take on water and sink when out of port. Some passengers were transferred to the Mayflower and the Speedwell returned to port. The planning for the voyage had met many complications surrounding gathering supplies to sustain all aboard and so set of much later in the year than was planned. This meant the mayflower would cross the stormy North Atlantic Ocean in the late summer / autumn going into winter when the seas were most turbulent. Half way across the ocean they sailed through a devastating storm system which battered the ship and would have thrown many overboard had they not lashed themselves to the ship with ropes. One man was washed overboard but managed to hold on to rigging and survived. Apparently he is an ancestor of George Bush. During the storm, one of the main beams that held the ship together was broken and it was touch and go as to whether the ship would get them across the rest of the Atlantic. This meant they had to navigate around storms for the rest of the journey and finally made land on November 11th 1620, but were much further North than intended in Privincetown MA. They were aiming for the mouth of the Hudson River. They sailed up the coast to Plymouth. When they arrived many of them were malnourished and weary from their journey. However only one person died on the crossing. However the coming winter would leave only 50 of the pilgrims alive to see the spring of 1621. The problem was that reports sent from the Hudson were that the climate was rather like England. However the pilgrms had been forced to settle in Plymouth MA because when trying to sail south to the Hudson, the Winds were against them and so they settled in Plymouth. They couldn’t have known that 100 miles north the winter was much harsher and by November the ground was frozen killing any crops they had planted and rendering it impossible to plant anything. Exposure also killed many, including 15 of the 30 crew members. The remaining crew set sail to return to England on 15th April 1621 and arrived in Plymouth UK on May 6th just 21 days after departing the Americas, due to fabourable westerly winds blowing them eastward and mild weather. I hope this interests anyone reading this and gives the song a bit more context. It’s estimated that nowadays roughly 35 million people can retrace their ancestry back to those who sailed the stormy Atlantic aboard the Mayflower.

Yo I can’t believe someone actually told you to stop uploading Iron Maiden reactions 😂. I knew you’d like this one for the story. I do really enjoy this one, and I remember it being one of the stand out songs when I first listened to the album. I love the guitar melodies during the verses and after the solo, but the main guitar solo is where I have a problem. I think it’s just lacking ever so slightly. Doesn’t really do much. Live version is much better. Dude, seriously you said people look for your videos in the morning. For me it’s my routine when I get out of work every day. And I’ll be honest, when you don’t upload a maiden reaction, I feel disappointed. I love this tune. Bruce's vocals are so melodic and the chorus is insane! The only part I don't really like in this song is the solo part. If they'd make this song 10/10 they should add a guitar solo from Adrian over the chrous section instead imo.

this one is an awesome song! The story is killer, Steve gollops on and you can hear his fingers slapping the lines. And Bruce! I couldnt imagine he could sing that high live but he even killed the shit out of high notes! Hope you watch the En Vivo dvd to see it live. Maiden discopraphy is one hell of a journey. Next track is one of my all time favorites and I Can say that confidently. Amazing story, great progression, great instrumentals, Bruce is top tier. I just think it’s a song you need to be patient with. It’s not that it gets dragged out but it’s more of an experience from start to finish rather then a classic galloping maiden style track.

Hurm, we as fans should respect your honest opinion. I love Iron Maiden, I think it is a special band. I think they have their own sound which is unmistakeable. Maiden evolved from a skull crushing heavy metal with lost of melody and harmonies to a progressive style “heavy metal”. Old school, yet creative. Very melodic and lots of harmonies. If you want to understand better their music, check out Licks of the Beast with Nico. Amazing!

In 2022 (as of 24 October 2022), 1,762 people have died while fleeing across the Mediterranean. Since 2014, more than 25,111 refugees had drowned in the Mediterranean. In 2016, over 5,000 people died on the sea route to Europe. thanx for going on with this awesome maiden journey stay safe, my friend

Not an specific history but a tail about what people felt every time in history they get out their homeland seeking a better land in a new land. You can imagine ancient first greek colons sailing throug the mediterranian see to found a new city in Sicilia, Spain or for example first english colons who sail on to playmouth coust.Anyway all those ancient people felt the same. Fear, Risks, pray! One word: Epic

As I said before, this album is definitely in my Top 3 list. I love ALL the songs on the album to the core of my heart, yet this song is definitely the main feature of the whole thing.
