Lately I've been rather fixated on the Huron Carol as performed by Anna Lapwood's Pembroke Choir, Cambridge. They are wonderful, and so was this! Thank you for this, so glad to be here!

So lovely! These flutes remind me of the beautiful yet haunting sound of the loon, which I've heard many times in my youth while staying in Minnesota. I've always admired the Native American culture. Both my paternal grandparents were born in the Montreal area, then moved down into Vermont. Their family trees go through many French Canadian (and very Catholic!) generations and, eventually, all the way back to France. I often imagine some of my French Canadian relatives from the 1600's and 1700's might have been among the first white fur traders or missionaries.

I first heard this amazing carol on the album "The Little Drummer Boy," by the Harry Simeone Chorale. Though that album is available here on KZbin, this song is not included. A search of "Huron Carol" will yield several fine renditions. A comment under that offered by Petrus Josephus offers fascinating background on this forgotten carol. Loreena McKennitt's version is simply breathtaking. This simple but moving song lodged within my Cherokee heart many years ago and it remains there to this day! I was singing it for my husband only recently! I did not, however, know its tragic history until now, that Saint Jean of Brebouf, a Jesuit priest, revised an earlier French carol in an attempt to woo the Indian people to faith in the Christ Child. Sadly, his life was cruelly cut short by the Iroquois people who later martyred him. Let us remember the sacrifice of this dear brother as we sing or play this carol. Thank you, Miss Dee Dee, for your careful research into these instruments and the lovely songs you play and sing! Thank you, also for your sweet rendition of this often forgotten carol! It is very moving and comforting to my spirit, reminding me that the Babe in the Manger came to save the Red People, as well.

The Huron Carol is well known in Canada and plays on the radio every Christmas. It's been recorded by several Canadian artists, Loreena McKennit and Tom Jackson are most notable. I love Tom Jackson's version the best. Just do a YT search for Huron Carol Tom Jackson. Merry Christmas.

Lovely. These words are the European settler version which give a false notion of the native peoples. There is/are other versions in the First Nations languages and the meaning is quite different. Something to think about in these days of reconciliation. The melody is always beautiful and sounds beautiful on many instruments and voices.
