Hurricane Beryl takes aim at Texas

Hurricane Beryl is moving toward south Texas after tearing through parts of the Caribbean and Mexico. More than 140 million people are under heat alerts, with dozens of cities expected to break heat records. And another dangerous wildfire has broken out in California. NBC News' Priscilla Thompson and Bill Karins report.

I have seen the ocean one time in my life. Back in 1977. I was at a New Jersy Boardwalk. Stayed at the shore one week. The main thing that came to mind, and I must say the Ocean is a beautiful place to go and I just loved swimming in the Ocean and walking along the beach. I knew I would never live along the Ocean. Knowing the Ocean can well up and devour everything. The Ocean is a powerful force of Nature. I live in the Pennsylvania Mountains. Visiting the Ocean is very wonderful, but living there is not for me. I feel much safer with the mountains around me. And I love the change of seasons in PA. I've endured some hot summers and some harsh winters in my life time. I am 66 years old. I was just thinking today, I love where I live. But I know someday I would like to visit the Ocean again. It is very peaceful, thinking about the awesomeness of God and His Creation. But the Ocean is the home of the fish, sharks and Whales and all other sea life. I don't want to infringe on their home. As I also don't infringe on the home of the Animals in PA. I know in the summer time there are a lot more Rattlesnakes in the mountains. They used to have big snake hunts to keep the population under control. But it seems everything is endangered now. When really it is not. Stay safe Ocean people, and never underestimate the power of Nature.

Mountains exist because of tectonic plates shifting, which cause earthquakes. There's no "guaranteed safe place" to live.

I lived in Florida for 33 years. I have seen, and lived all over Florida. The panhandle beaches are just breath taking. Everyone should get a chance to see them once in their lifetime. Alabama beaches too! I retired and moved back to my birthplace. The Ozarks. Forgot what Fall and Winter was. I love being back. That was a year ago.

Gee this wk, it was crazy hot (a little better today though) in N CA, kinda early for super hot (fires already darn it)...but also keeping an eye (no pun meant!) on Beryl, headed toward TX...I know rain would be great for lots of places there-but a hurricane so early? Daughter & hubby expecting their 3rd little one, the heat N of Austin has been rough-seems like TX has had everything so far '24! Honkin 1"+ hail, ice storms, flash floods, T storms, tornados, drought, fires....etc now hurricane season already, yikes! Hang in there TX! (hubby from Louisiana, so Iam used to monitoring hurricanes)Guess just wait & see...glad some prep is starting for the Gulf areas..
