This rare Category 5 wind gust is embedded with in Charley's eyewall with sustained winds of 125mph. Mike believes a "mini-swirl" or "sub-vortices" was embedded in the eyewall and went right over his location during this sudden wind gusts.
Scientist believe Hurricane Andrew had numerous "mini-swirls" that devastated South Florida back in 1992.
While in Charley's eye Mike recorded a low barometric pressure of 942mb which was used in The National Hurricane Centers final report of Hurricane Charley.

I was in DeSoto county, about 30 miles inland from Charlotte Harbor. This hurricane's forward motion was so fast, it hadn't decreased much in intensity when it hit us. I was also directly in the eyewall. It was the most intense thing I have ever been through in my life. When it was all over, I looked at my ten year old son and told him he could now honestly call himself a survivor. I thought we were going to die. I had my son get into the bathtub and I stood beside the tub with a mattress because I thought the roof was going to pop off. I was going to put the mattress on top of him and then lay on top of the mattress if necessary in the hope of saving my son's life. My ears were popping as though I was in an airplane. We were without power for fourteen days after Hurricane Charley. I will never forget that day as long as I live.

I've literally met people who drove to Toronto and parked at a Tim Hortons here to wait out the storm during Hurricane Sandy. Sandy actually hit us as a borderline hurricane. But not the nightmare hell in NYC. Dude has a guitar with him and he was recording riffs into Ableton Live. They were cool. Our winters don't provide any hope for people

Tony Perri sort of, but not really. The Sahara hot winds blow to the Cape Verde islands, the Cape Verde islands evaporates them, and then the vapor forms into a hurricane.

+HisAjabness I have lived in Florida since 1989 and have been through MANY hurricanes and yes it is scary and very stressful with all of the preparations. . You have to protect your windows by putting shutters or plywood on windows, gas in your car, cash because if the power is out debit/credit cards won’t work, a lot of non-perishable food and plenty of ice to keep your cold or frozen food fresh, water, flashlights, batteries, battery operated TV and/or radio, It’s exhausting! In Florida the last one, Hurricane Irma in 2019, was very strong and during the worst of the storm, I kept hearing this weird sound, it sounded like a bunch of trolls marching on my roof. Found out afterward that it was the sound of shingles being ripped off of my roof! I now have a metal roof. Seeing and experiencing a hurricane certainly is an incredible experience to see, hear, and feel these unbelievable winds and such enormous, overwhelming, and destructive power from nature. You should experience one in a safe location.

Happened to me during this storm. Worked at a privately owned pizza restaurant in Sanford Florida (Central fl) as a delivery driver at the time. The owner wanted me to come in and actually drive around making delivery’s in this crap that night. Ended up working right up until the storm hit and once I got home and waited it out I couldn’t even leave my neighborhood because there were so many downed trees. I still can’t believe that.

Nah. 160-180 mph is equivalent to EF4 tornado. Almost all things including the storm chaser's car would go airborne with winds of more than 160 mph and all the trees near the area would be debarked.

Adriann Santos Actually no. As you probably know hurricanes have straight line winds, which will make it exceedingly difficult for them to flip a car out in the open. It probably would’ve been different if it was back then, but cars are much more aerodynamic then they were a long time ago. Though I do agree that marsh harbor did not experience 185mph winds, probably more like 155-160mph. Those 185mph winds were 10nautical miles northeast of them thankfully. You should check out the hurricane Michael Mexico Beach footage on “stormchasingvideos” channel, it’s an 1hour43minute long video and I can assure you that it will be the strongest winds you’ll ever see on video. I myself would estimate peak sustained winds of 165mph. Total white out conditions combined with storm surge at between minute55 and 117.

Great video Mike! I live between Daytona and Orlando and had the western eyewall pass over 2+hours after this was filmed. We received gusts up to 100 but mostly in 90 range. We don't have have the tropical trees that bend like Port Charlotte though. It wasn't the wind causing structural failures, it was the trees. 100-200 year old oaks and yellow pine destroyed hundreds of homes in my area but I also saw how incredibly flexible some could be. One particular gust took a huge oak and squashed it's giant limbs right down to ground level. They sprung back up and then whipped around until they were facing the coast without losing any! That was my 'gas station' moment when I realized how powerful this thing really was. Each limb on that tree weighs tons and it was thrown around like a feather. So glad for you to experience what you did and come out the other side intact. We will never forget that day.

Nah. They reported 150MPH sustained windspeed. That "Gust" was easily 180-200. Every Hurricane has freak gusts like this one. Look at other videos with 200MPH hurricane wind speeds and look at that section in this video. Look very similar. But who knows, they didn't have any recording devices with them

I went through Hurricane Irma at home, and am still here, too. However, there were a lot of very unnecessary evacuations from here. People as far inland as Lehigh Acres (about 15-20 miles east of me) were evacuating. And the vast majority of evacuees were not just heading far inland, they were fleeing to the mountains like, either Irma's storm surge was going to submerge the entire State of Florida and wash up in Montana, or like The Nothing from "The Neverending Story" were coming. Like even as if Hurricane Irma were packing maximum sustained winds of 700 mph.

I was in Orlando when Charley hit and he still packed a big punch. This is the greatest hurricane wind video ever imo. Charley was well on its way to Cat 5 before making that sudden turn inward at Port Charlotte. Everyone in Tampa evacuated to all the hotels in Orlando and then Charley ended up hitting them there. I was 9 years old and vacationing on Captiva when hurricane Charley rolled around in 2004. My parents waited until the last day of evacuation because the weather was gorgeous (ROOKIE MISTAKE!), haha so we leave and found a room at a Holiday Inn in Punta Gorda. For some reason my dad brought his laptop and found a small condo we could stay at in Sebring to ride it out. The people at the Holiday Inn were begging us to stay, but we left and that Holiday Inn ended up being completely leveled. Riding out a hurricane was horrifying at the time, but a pretty cool experience 10 years down the line.

I salute the weather reporters who find the courage to do coverage in the middle of a hurricane. Given the choice, I would rather cover from either the bathtub of an interior bathroom or a safe room. Basically, either a room built to withstand 250 mph winds, or an interior room reinforced and anchored by plumbing.

I live in Central Florida and went through this hurricane.. it WAS NOT fun!! All my pine trees in my yard were uprooted one came through my roof. This was the most terrifying hurricane I have ever experienced so far.. now here comes Matthew 😟 NOT AGAIN!! This will be my boyfriends first time experiencing this and I try to show him how bad this can become. The hurricane is bad enough to deal with but afterwards is the clean up with zero electricity, humid as all get out. We lost power for 7 days and it was miserable!! Then a few weeks later Francis hit and again more trees came down and we went without power for 11 more days. I use to think Hurricanes were fun as a kid until Charley came.. the fun and games were over!! I don't mean to sound paranoid but if Matthew is even as bad or worse then Charley we are screwed!! This is one thing about living in Florida that sucks aside from the humid summers. I almost want to pack up and move up north because if snow storms are the worst thing up there well I would be in luck cause I absolutely love the snow!!

Missouri gets some snow 😜. As a kid I would dream about it snowing in Florida especially during christmas. I would imagine how fun it would be to play in it. Build snow men and slide. i was in hurricane charley - we were on vacation to disney world at the time. the geniuses that ran our hotel told everyone to come down to the lobby for "safety," the entire front of the lobby was made of fucking glass. my momma grew up on the bay in mobile alabama so she said "hell no kids, we're going back upstairs" and we rode it out on like the 8th floor inside the bathroom. when we were in the eye of the storm she let us go look out the window and the parking lot was a MESS. cars stacked on cars, roofs on cars, power poles everywhere. it was insane. we of course went back inside the bathroom when the wall of the eye was approaching. I think by the time it passed over us it was like a category 3 or 4 since disney is a bit inland from the coast. honestly if someone told me i either had to be stuck outside during a hurricane or i could be inside but stuck in a tornado, i'd pick the hurricane. at least they are somewhat predictable.

This is quite an insight. I didn't realise just how focused the destructive force of these storms is at the eye wall. Now you can see that for a cat 4 or 5 storm, even buildings are just match sticks. I hate to imagine what we will see when Irma has passed through. Damn shame about missing the bit between 2:52 and 3:10, but I still got the idea that the forces here are massive.

You best be going way over in Ga. to the west side of it b/c the middle and the lower parts around Valdosta won't do you any good. We drove from St. Cloud, Fl. to Valdosta back in 2007=08 I think it was and we got into the motel and 2 hrs later the power went off, it poured something terrible, lightening, thunder all of it and there was no power there for 3 days. Head west away from the coast. I'm up in southern West Virginia so I think we may get some rain from it but that's all I am expecting.

yeah right now we are planning to go to tampa bay and if it shifts west we are going to do the rest of the drive to western georgia. 10 hour drive with 8 family members in a car and gas running out literally every gas station you go to is real stressful.

Man if only someone could have got footage of Hurricane Andrew I’m homestead, Naranja or Florida City. 165-170 mph, 926mb dropping to 922mb while making landfall and....I don’t think anyone knows the wind speeds, but to blow apart a brick air force hanger and rip out three F-16’s break off the nose and rip open the cockpit, the barracks flattened out, busses tossed hundreds of yards, iron bars actually twisted, a six story building having an entire side 1/4th ripped off st once, gutted trees, homes gutted or shredded. The storage facility was flattened 2 dimensionally, trailers off their foundation, hones in matchsticks, I mean damage I didn’t think that was possible outside tornados, but the damage from that particular Hurricane is unbelievable. I believe the speed it moves and sudden wind increase due to its small size, added to the slight, maybe tenth of a degree higher then most hurricanes angle of the winds made it a virtual giant tornado, so the damage was shocking and. The most extreme I can say exempting a few west pacific and a couple others over the past 150 years, that one, we will never know the true wind speeds and that’s why anazing, plus strengthening over Biscayne Bay to to 922mb. It’s likely both being night and so strong I couldnt imagine. I that would be interesting footage if you have night vision.

Yep, literally saw the same type of damage to those kinds of structures here in Panama City after Michael came through in 2018. Not a gas station in town that didn’t lose its pump awning. We got sustained winds over 170 in some places and an average of around 160 in the western eyewall. It was knarly to say the least. I have a bad feeling this season will see us getting hit again with a strong 3 or 4 or god forbid another 5. One category 5 is enough for a lifetime, idk how we could recover from another one.

Jordan Newsom Panama City and the surrounding areas in the west eyewall got MSW of 140-150mph, gust up to 180mph. Tyndall fall was on the northwest side of the eyewall and got winds of 150-160mph, gust up to 190mph. The east side, or the “dirty” side of the eyewall which Mexico got, the MSW were 160-165mph, gusting to 200mph.

I already had storm issues from being in these storms as a kid and had only been back a month... 4 were a bullseye that year and I opted to not go back... 2010 my store was destroyed by 2 tornadoes in one storm in MI so doesn't matter where I go... That summer was awful. I lived in Altamonte Springs (an Orlando suburb). During Charley, my second-story apartment's roof was torn off & the huge amount of rain that soaked into the carpet made the floor collapse onto my neighbor's apartment below me. I took as many precautions as I could, though & had packed my car full of valuables & what wouldn't fit I wrapped in blankets in the closet. Everything exposed was blown away or destroyed. My friend's house I stayed at near downtown during Frances had a huge oak tree uproot & fall through her kitchen. Nothing major happened during Jeanne, but for the third storm in a row, power was knocked out & getting necessities was difficult. The worst was trying to sleep at night in the sauna-like conditions. My girlfriend at the time was a claims adjuster & was so insanely busy for the next several months that we never saw each other & our relationship fizzled out. I lived out of suitcases on several friends' couches for three months. I know many people had it far worse than me, but 2004 was (& will hopefully remain) the worst summer of my life.
