Hurricane Fiona makes landfall plunging Puerto Rico into total blackout

Hurricane Fiona made landfall along the extreme southwestern coast of Puerto Rico, near Punta Tocon, at 3:20 p.m. ET Sunday with winds of 85 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The hurricane is already causing catastrophic flooding as it moves just west of Puerto Rico and heads for the Dominican Republic, the center said in a 5 p.m. update.
The hurricane center is forecasting 12 to 18 inches of rainfall with a local maximum of 30 inches, particularly across eastern and southern Puerto Rico. Four to 8 inches of rainfall is expected for northern and eastern parts of the Dominican Republic, with a local maximum of 12 inches possible along the northeast coast.

My Bahamian friend told me that years ago when the big hurricane struck it destroyed their house, blew the roof off. His mother was missing. Days later the fishermen found her miles off shore clinging in the upturned roof. Now, when a big storm comes, she becomes very quiet...and climbs up into the rafters. ( south Florida )

Guam is also a US territory. They went through a typhoon that destroyed the grid for six months. They banned all trailers and stick built houses. Everything is cinder block and concrete. No problems! I went through a typhoon twice as strong as this one in Guam, we just cleared the trees off the roads, then back in business. The whole Gulf Coast and Caribbean are like The Two Little Pigs.

Many bought vacation homes in Puerto Rico after that last hurricane getting a deal on island beach property. It may have not been so much a deal . This is problematic for the entire Caribbean area . It's fortunate that it has been a much slower tropical season this year but to bad that did not help Puerto Rico . They once again must live like a third world country .

Yes, sometimes sh*t happened, but in the past few years, they can’t even handle a category 1 hurricane. They’ve been drowned in austerity measures imposed by an unelected federal board and they just can’t catch a break these past few years. Yes, the island has never had world class infrastructure,and there have always been some corrupt local politicians, but ever since Obama passed the unelected oversight board (with bipartisan support)….everything on the island is collapsing with pure acceleration.

I was watching some reports that were tracking the storm. It looked like the Eastern side of the Dominican Republic will get hit, but not as badly. The worst part of the storm is northeast of the eyewall--which is the part that is hovering over Puerto Rico. But there's this high pressure front that will luckily stop it from trying to go west. It'll get wedged up there again at Bermuda though, before a low pressure front causes it to start moving on again. I hope you stay safe though! I hope it doesn't cause much damage in your area.

The issue at hand is that the US has historically viewed--and ignored--Puerto Rico just like it does the rest of Latin America. As the former mayor of San Juan stated, the last disaster was politicized and the DC bureaucracy numbed the response and caused aid to get caught up in local politics and it was not delivered to those who needed it the most in a timely manner.

Puerto Rico doesn't pay a single penny in US taxes. There's no reason for us taxpayers to bail out Puerto Rico whenever they have a disaster. Their government is corrupt everyone knows that. Guam doesn't pay any US taxes either, and they have typhoons twice as strong as these little hurricanes. But they don't go begging with their hand out to Washington DC. They take care of themselves.

PR news is only reporting 1 fatality. A lot of rescue teams are out and about right now. Telemundo Puerto Rico has an app where you can watch live news and they’ve been broadcasting all day long. I haven’t been able to get ahold of my father since the early morning, and I know there’s severe flooding for sure, 5 minutes from where he lives. Hopefully, for us and everyone else, it’s because of the blackout! I think it’s more so going to be a lot of property damage & an economic hit for the island (unfortunately).

@@island_girl yes, I did. He’s okay and so is the property! The vegetation along the river helped withhold the river from flooding into the property. He says that it was really close to spilling through though. He says there are a lot of landslides and flooding near him. He was only able to contact me because he went into his car to charge the phone, but after that, I haven’t heard of him. I’m going to send him a battery operated emergency radio so he can charge his phone without having to get in his car, probably some solar operated stuff too. There has been over 21 inches of rain where he’s from.
