Ian SLAMS into Key West? A bit of hyperbole there. Real-time, measure wind speeds at Smathers Beach and the airport are 45mph S and 46 mph S at The Flats as of 12:45AM EDT. The stronger winds are well offshore. These are weak tropical storm force winds as expected. Up in Marathon, it's 40 mph SSE. Wind gusts are 50-60 mph.

My son and his family are stationed at the base in Key West and so far he says it’s not as bad as they are making it out to be. They have been packed to evacuate for two days, but so far they are still there. The last time I checked in with him from here in AK this evening, and if it got that bad he would surely try to let me know.

I think these talking heads don't see the real danger. IF this lands on Charlotte, it will have other effects since already the higher ground, and rivers that feed into that charlotte area, will be pouring back all the water that has been drenching the eastern areas. IF the hurricane stalls out and dumps even more water in this area, which is low, you will have homes completely flooded. Oh, and let's not forget about the 5 PM high tide tomorrow?

Not diminishing the possible devastation, scientists and engineers should be working on ways to stop these in their track. I understand satellites can detect an eye forming when its about 1/4 of a mile across. Small enough to have one of the weaker walls blown apart with munitions or microwave technology.
