Hurricane force winds only extended 30 miles from the center of the storm, making it quite compact. For comparions' sake, Ian had hurricane force winds around 75 mph from the center (and the eye of Ian was significantly bigger than Milton). So no, it didn't have a "wide swath" of destruction.

I recall the eye going right through Orlando while huddled on the floor of an interior bathroom of a hotel, just me and my kitty. Wind & rain howling all around us….then silence through the eye…until the wind changed direction. Been through a many…this was by far the worst.

My parents rent #39 every winter. Surprisingly they only had a few inches of water come inside the house. It also had a secondary roof so even though it lost part of the roof, it stayed dry.

I was watching it come through Tampa from my bedroom window. It was a very traumatic experience. It hit south of us but the damage here in Tampa was horrific. Places in Tampa that had never flooded before were flooded. I saw a big chunk of a grocery store missing.

"Horrific". Laughable. Tampa had minor flooding and minor damage. You want horrific? Try Ft. Myers to North Port after Ian. Makes what happened to Tampa look like a small squall.

Hey, watching from the UK, we don't get any bad weather at all. Some heavy rain now and again so this stuff is fascinating to watch. We had some strong winds yesterday, but only enough to blow my hair in the other direction 😂

Isn't there a curfew? Did the police ever bother you for driving around in a hurricane?

No Walter, there's no curfew. There comes a point where emergency services won't respond anymore (usually when winds hit 40 MPH sustained). So after that you're on your own but it's still possible to get around.

If that's what a 140 mi an hour sustained wind looks like then I'm not going to worry about hurricanes too much. I'm in Fort Lauderdale and live about 3 mi from the beach. Unlike my mother I'm tired of evacuating every time we get a hurricane warning. If it's possible to survive in a car during the worst part of a category 4 hurricane I'm not going to worry about it too much.

You are proof positive that it's possible to drive around in the eye-wall of a category 4 hurricane. And my mother evacuates every time there's a hurricane warning. She told me that she's tired of evacuating because after she gets back home the "Armageddon" storm wasn't that bad. Tried to explain to her that all of the video footage and pictures that you see are usually isolated areas of beachfront properties. My mother is about 15 mi from the beach. But she's always worried about the wind and the heavy flooding caused by rain. Hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are imminent. I don't understand why she evacuates since she lives 15 miles from the beach. I have tried to explain to her that the pictures and video footage are beachfront properties in most cases. And that meteorologists who apparently understand these storms actually drive around in them.

Always hide from the wind. Run from the water. We got almost direct hit with Ian. It was bad but made it ok. No surge

You really have no idea what you're talking about and should avoid giving anyone advice. (1) This wasn't a Category 4. Milton was 120MPH at landfall which makes it a mid-3. (2) Milton was a very small storm with hurricane force winds only 30 MPH from center. These guys were in Venice, FL about 15 miles from the center in Siesta Key. The the top wind speed in Venice was about 80 MPH which is barely Category 1 wind speeds. So they were driving around in winds that were barely half the speed of a strong Cat 4. You want to know why she evacuates (and probably should)? Because a Big One is far more dangerous. Wind speed and wind load have an exponential relationship, not a linear one. The load exerted on a building as a result of blowing winds is a factor of the square of the wind speed. A 50 MPH wind offers up about a 6 psf. 100 MPH is 25. 150 MPH is 57. The wind is 3 times faster but the wind load is 9 times stronger. That's how you lose your roof. That's how your house falls apart. And that's why 78 MPH doesn't look at that bad while 150 MPH will make your butt pucker (just go look at videos of Ian or Michael taken from parking garages). Add on top of that the tree damage, flooding (inland flooding is a pretty big deal, just ask the people of Arcadia after Ian), lack of power, lack of drinkable water, lack of gas, lack of provisions and the rest of it and it's an absolute shit show. After Ian there were almost 200,000 people in North Port, Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda were cut off from help for almost 4 days - roads to the South, North and East were all under water. So unless you're prepared to deal with all of that (including the mosquitos, the unbelievable heat and humidity, the various creatures in that water, etc).then don't stay. So yeah, don't give your mother any advice because you don't have the slightest clue what a big storm is like.
