Joplin, Missouri is considering changing the building code to require these safety features on homes.

Why dont Americans use cyclone rods. In Australia we have a half inch treaded rod that runs from the concrete footing through the framework all the way through the topplate. We use a mudwasher 2inch square washer then a nut on top . We space them about 6 foot apart and beside all external doors and windows. Also on internal bracing walls. Then we use a cyclone strap that wraps under both top plates. Each leg of the stap gets 6 nails. In addition we use a shitload of plywood brace on the walls and metal bracing to the roof. The roof battens are tied to the trusses with 4 inch screws and the metal roof is screwed to the battens

Hurricane threaded rod used in stick built homes in some regions in Florida...48 inches on center...some use cables instead of rods once house is completed kinda hard to go back and install these

Thanks FLASH for putting all this information together. Too bad I was not able to select building options like a more resilient home vs upgrading my kitchen with all the upgraded design selections. Are there any guidance to retrofit an existing building? I have an unfinished two-story garage. The exterior is complete, but I have access to all the interior because all the framing is still exposed. I would like to strengthen it to withstand an EF2 Tornado. With all the work and research that has been completed in FL and coast areas, this should be more common knowledge and less expert engineer stuff.

@GLG1957 Are you talking about the foundation fasteners or the wind uplift resistors attaching the truss/rafter? Although both methods would have done little to protect against a EF-5 wind force, they will go a long way to making homes safer. Check out some alternative methods to anchoring the roof structure using screws. These will be allowed in the Joplin area according to the Building Code Dept.

So design the house so if it gets blown away, it all flies in 1 piece (from footings to roof) and doesn't rack?

I am planning the building of a 400 MPH hurricane resistant home in florida which requires the roof being metal, all connection points are using three steps above the required codes, meaning double hurricane straps, three times metal/aluminium connection points from the ground, screws where nails are used or added, safe room anchor ground bolts, heavy concrete and rebar, reinforced side anchors and tops, hurricane resistant windows along with the entire home being one floor and exterior window steel shutters and steel solid doors with hurricane resistant steel screen doors in front. The required insulation with added heavy duty foam and reflective and water resistant materials. The home will have no intrusion areas from wind pressure alone, however, there will be a repair kit should the unthinkable occur (a tree comes crashing onto it etc......... along with actually having a safe room installed inside also!

As the video says, you can have straps reinforced in older structures.

so what happens when a car hits the wall, I understand that you can keep adding things and make things stronger heck lets build steel walls and so forth but then the only people that can afford homes are guys that sell these straps , and the only thing standing in Joplin is the hospital , barely , thumbs up for a great video though!

If you build your house in the middle of the highway than you really have to worry about a car hitting it.

IP Man Thats why if you live in states that get hurricanes every year, you need to make a concrete home which will withstand a hurricane. Why make a home out of wood and paper that youll have to rebuild every year when a hurricane strikes lol

guess what, just saw a video posted on Facebook where the house had an overload of hurricane straps. The house was in the Keys in Florida and just hit by Irma category 5 . about 18 seconds in, it's the 2 story darker blue house, the only house standing pretty much. facebook.com/wxchasing/videos/529387440726224/?hc_ref=ARSS4_NvhTNq88mK7F0gf0kS40NGKD-wmoAwSVhqKBnJm0Fg2yqtfXXMwTjR2h11Ctc

We are in tornado country, if it is blowing hard enough to throw semi trailers and farm tractors around then the only safe place is underground. But, if you are on the edge then straps work great. They tie from the foundation to the studs, studs to rafters, then screws to hold a metal roof down. Cut back trees that will fall on the house and sleep sound. Pay for the insurance.

Has anyone bothered to build hybrid steel-fiber/steel rebar reinforced concrete houses and buildings? They maybe expensive BUT IT SAVES TONS OF MONEY IN THE FUTURE OF REBUILDING! Insurance companies will love it and will help you negotiate with banks to get reasonable loans. But knowing banks, they prefer houses that requires constant rebuilding after every catastrophe so that they can make more money out of you and that is one hell of a EXTORNIONSTIC RACKETEERING UNETHICAL PRACTICE! Then insurance companies might as well be banks themselves! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpOmdKqKoa-Xnbc Hurricane Sandy: A Story of Survival
