I live in a new Florida community where all the homes are block and have truss straps. During Ian (a cat 4) we took a direct hit and no one lost a roof. Just a few shingles.

That is GREAT to hear!

Are they single wrap or double wrapped like in the video?
@solardiver722 күн бұрын
@@jg9002 embedded in concrete and wrapped over the truss. Just one. Miami-Dade County hurricane code.

My post frame house has the trusses screwed to the post with fasten master 4.5 inch headlok screws. It's a 3 ply post with the truss sitting in-between 2 plys. Basically sandwiched with the screws running through the plys and truss. 2 big structural screws would have the be sheared off to get the truss to lift up.

That is a top belt beam. A lintel is a horizontal support of timber, stone, concrete, or steel across the top of a door or window.

Thanks for clarification! Yes, I realized later I misspoke. However the point about the straps and Florida code is the main point.

Yes, thank you, I which I would have known this before having my roof done- I just called to get the "" 3rd nail"" and it cost a whooping 1750.00 I almost fell out of my chair :(

Yes, it is a lot of work to do it once a house is already built, but it can save you a lot of money in the years ahead as your insurances costs go down, and more importantly it can keep the roof system from blowing off in a major hurricane or tornado!

Great stuff and really useful, keep it coming. My question is which specifically are the category B straps/clips and where can I purchase them?
@SharpeRoofing2 жыл бұрын
Jake, all clips and straps can typically be purchased at any building supply location. The categories we have in Florida have more to do with the number of fasteners than the actual type you use. If you listen closely I point out what you need for each category, even though B is good enough, and just going from A to B can save a lot of money! Any home built in Florida since the 70's usually has some form of these already in place, but sometimes they just need one or two more additional nails.

I have single wrap and was wondering if it's possible to get double wrapped. Or is double wrapped only possible before they pour the concrete? Is it costly and worth adding the second wrap?
@SharpeRoofing21 күн бұрын
It typically is done at original construction. It can be done later but is typically cost prohibitive. If you are doing just to reduce insurance cost, the savings is really not worth it. A single wrap is "Category C" and double wrap is a "D" and the savings on your insurance is minimal. If you think you need it for wind protection, I would say it is unlikely unless you do not have enough nails in the single wrap you have now. Also important is the nailing of the plywood. All homes in Florida built about 2003 and newer have the correct spacing of 6" CO in the field and 4" OC on the seams.

We have a small store building (3m by 2m) attached perpendicular to the main house, which is brick and has a 4 inch square timber beam as the base upon which rafters rest (single pitch). The old beam seemed to just rest on the bricks without any fixing and has rotted out due to roof leaking. How should the connection be made between the new beam and the brick wall? Is it enough to just rest on the brickwork, use mortar or some other method? Thanks for any advice.
@SharpeRoofing Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure of the building codes in your area, but typically it must be mechanically attached to the top of the brick wall or the wood top plate behind the brick wall if it is a facade.

So untreated trusses are allowed to be placed directly on the concrete filled bond beam.

Hi Steve. I shot this video at a job where we were installing a metal roof for a GC at a custom home in Lutz, FL. It is inside the pool house. It had already passed the framing inspection is all I know. Thanks for your comment!

Got it. Thanks for the response.

@@stevelopez372ya doesn’t seem like good practice. Being that the other piece of wood is PT…. Why not put a flat PT to sit the truss on?
@onjofilms Жыл бұрын
That's not a lintel. It's a bond beam.
@SharpeRoofing Жыл бұрын
Thanks for noticing that and for the correct terminology! I forgot lintels are for over windows and doors. Slip of the lip!
