Ken. I can’t believe you are moving around on the boat in bare feet. A buddy was helping a neighbor drain and re-float a boat after a heavy rain storm last summer. He was bare foot. He stepped on a metal can that was under the water that the owner used for bait and received a terrible gash in his foot that subsequently became infected likely due to bacteria in the water. He almost lost his foot. Please be careful. As always, thanks for sharing. Stay safe!!!!
@CaptKenO2 ай бұрын
It might not seem it, but I'm very careful where I put my feet. I don't step on anything I can't see through the water

I love the sounds of the little birds. All our small birds have left for warmer places. What a great service you provide. Are there any crocs in the waters you work?
@CaptKenO2 ай бұрын
Crocs, no. Gators, probably not but possibly. It's salt water, so the gators don't like it, but after this much rain or if I'm far from an inlet, it can be more brackish, so the chance of one being in the water increases...but I'm not worried about it

Imagine in an emergency that forced ANYone out to use the canal just to become entangled in his doings?? If he's not ticketed he'll do that again & he could cause a bad outcome for others.....Now off to watch your video

I can't fathom the number of calls you guys(everyone) must be getting right now ?? I've heard you talk about being on like a rotating 24-28 hour shift where you are the one on call during those hours? I'm curious how a company handles paying you? Not asking how much but is it like a base salary & then a cut based on the service/time involved? I'm only trying to make sense of it in my own small mind here, lol, you be safe in the coming weeks.... things must be gnarly out there? peace man
@CaptKenO2 ай бұрын
We run 24hr shifts and I normally work 3 days straight. With the storm, we're still working 24hr shifts because we still have to cover regular tows/ungroundings, but for the salvage side of stuff, we're usually working 6-8hrs a day. As far as pay goes. We get standby pay for the being on call, a small bonus if we go out, and then a fixed percentage of the invoice. And that goes for any job we do, whether it's a tow or salvage
@diggy-d8w2 ай бұрын
Thanks Captain, the job is demanding on good days but it's hard to fathom the push/shove after these storms and as you told this customer, gotta have a marina w/ space to take the boat in? I had asked you about these boats & you had lined up a marina w/ a crane that was going to take some boats on a given day. You helped find a marina willing to take a few boats. Real Estate for damaged -n- salvage boats seems hard to find & I imagine it's getting worse? IDKnow why my minds is even thinking about all of this crap, I don't even own a boat = Go Figure... peace man & do be safe out there

Hey Capt Ken does the membership also cover for salvaging/recoveries due to hurricane damage? I bet you guys are gonna be crazy busy. Stay safe!
@CaptKenO2 ай бұрын
It does not, but your hull insurance (similar to your standard car insurance) will. Hull insurance is cheap and salvage is not, so like towing insurance, you'd be crazy not to have it

If you start the engine, that had rain go over it, you well blow the engine? Full of stories. Pull out the plugs and crank then you well see if any water at all got into it. The fuel tank definitely did not get rain into it. Two stroke engines that sit under water for hours start right up after pumping the water out by cranking the engine with the plugs out.
@rileypup59592 ай бұрын
How did you guys get the salvage request so fast ? We’re the owners calling and maybe emailing pictures of the boat and a salvage price was given and ok’d by the owner. As boat salvage is not part of any towing membership, boat salvage $’s are generally very pricey.
@CaptKenO2 ай бұрын
This is covered by their hull insurance. I don't deal with that side of the business so I don't know specifics... But I believe they call their insurance, send a pic, and then we get the call from the insurance company.

I would have told the customer if there is no rain to open all the hatches to let it dry out and to help it from molding to clean all the inside of the boat and take the top off the motor. If it was me I would have told the customer it would be good if you or someone to pull out the sparkplugs and turn over the motor to get out water if there is any in the cylinders then spray WD-40 inside the cylinders then put the sparkplugs back in the motor.if the customer is a handyman he works on small engines or auto's I'd let him know unplug all the electrical and blow all the connectors with air then use marine dielectric grease on all the electrical wires and connectors But not start the motor have a repair shop look it over have the customer let the repair shop know that they pulled the sparkplugs and turned the motor over then added WD-40 to the cylinders
@CaptKenO2 ай бұрын
We aren't in the business of telling customers how to fix their issues, and in the case of salvages, generally the insurance company doesn't want anything done to the boat so they can properly assess the boat and go from there.

To pull the boat away from the dock, so the hurricane can't bash it in to the dock over an over. It's pretty common to do right before a hurricane but your expected to remove those lines as soon as the storm is over.
@derekfawell28532 ай бұрын
@@RebelCowboysRVs Many thanks for the explanation.
@CaptKenO2 ай бұрын
Pretty much what rebel said. Usually I've seen it where the boat drops an anchor or two in the middle of the channel so that it's accomplishing the same thing, but not actually blocking the whole channel. That's what I thought this one was, because I could see the lines coming off the boat and going down. He tied to the dock across the way because it's easier and more should be more secure than an anchor
