You would not even be able to tell that Rising Star is the youngest of the foals. He has a great muscle definition and is just about the same height as the others from shoulder measurement. The only aspect that gives him away is his neck length is which not as lengthy as the older foals.

The foals aren’t used to eat treats yet. Uniek is the Queen of hunger and gets excited over a scoop of pellets and 🍏🍏 and 🥕🥕. 🇳🇱🌷

Risey is starting to look more buffed, he is going to a very handsome stallion. Sjors seems very calm these days as compared to his first time leading the herd. I wonder, the foals coat seems fluffy, do they have to be shaved when they are fully grown or does it shed by itself?

They'll shed their coat come spring - all horses do to some degree. Depends on the temperature in winter and how much time they spent outside. But with foals it's particularly noticeable, they are indeed quite 'fluffy' at first. They often drastically change color during those early years as well. Frisians are black all their life, of course, but a lot of coat colors develop and change as the horses mature.

They will shed that foal coat and just like the Friesian foals go from sort of a dull brown color to black, Rising Star will stay chestnut like Sjors. In the winter they grow longer hair and often do not appear quite as black but they shed it out in the spring. The black can also be influenced if they are out in the sun a lot, that can make it fade a little bit. There are chestnut friesians but they are very rare. Yvonne could probably address that. I am not sure if there are any chestnut friesians in Holland and I am not sure if they would let them stay in the registry. The color chestnut is also called sorrel in some breeds but it is basically the same color. Not to be confused with bay, which is usually a darker color of red brown and they always have black points, black legs, manes and tails. The genetics of horse coat color is quite fascinating to me and I have studied it a lot. With colors like Palominos (gold), Cremellos and buckskin, you get into dilution genes. I live in the United States in Idaho where we even have a state horse which is the Appaloosa, long considered the horse developed by the Nez Perce Indians.

I rember over 25 yrs ago when I was living in Palmdale California USA a small horse magazine was doing an article about Freisians. It was because of the movie Ladyhawk and the beautiful black horse in the movie. It turned out there was a small ranch in a nearby town with freisians. I was able to contact them and they invited me to meet them. I went and when I went to see the horses the first thing that happened was this beautiful black horse just rested his head in my arms! It was so amazing. They had their young daughter ride one in the ring so I could see in person the wonderful natural movement. I could not have horses due to financial circumstances but I did admire them. Years later of course watching the Dr Pol veterinarian tv show I saw that he owned two freisians. And then about 18 months ago finding your youtubes. While some other freisian youtubes are more theatrical and dramatic I enjoy yours about everyday life of the friesians and how educational they are. Its very interesting to see the rigorous judging of quality that goes on to help insure the horse represent good quality. I was wondering if their conformation and build has changed much over the years. Like in many purebred dogs sometimes specific body build styles have changed over the years. Like extreme sloping in the backs of german shepherds, or making adult sharpei dogs more wrinkled as adults. Sometimes these style changes are not good for the animals ability to do their jobs. So are their more slender freisians for athletics and more compact heavier ones for carraige work? Or are lovers of this breed keeping them as original as possible, truly preserving what they were meant to be? How does Rein view these beautiful horses? Thank you as always for sharing them with us all from your perspective.
