I am in the media industry and this is simply the studio lights doing their job, they are meant to illuminate the subject as evenly as possible. The before was done shot using one light with no diffusion, making it very harsh and unattractive, in the studio they can have 25+ lights being used that are all perfectly adjusted to make people as beautiful as possible.
