"What if they get the wrong voices back?' Amusingly, Buffy sort of did: that's not SMG screaming at the end. Apparently, she was having trouble pulling off the sustained, loud scream they wanted, so she was dubbed over by another actress.

Really? And I've always felt it was a pretty weak scream as screams go. If they were going to overdub her, they could've chosen a much better screamer.

Welcome to one of THE best BTVS episodes!! So so good! People criticized Whedon for relying too much on witty dialogue. So he was like, fine, I’ll make an episode with almost no dialogue! Brilliant episode of TV! And The Gentlemen were the creepiest, scariest villains on Buffy. I recommend reading the Wikipedia article on the episode and it really gets into the themes and historical context of the episode.

I spent a year putting together a Gentleman costume for a "Vampire Ball" we were attending in New Orleans on the week of Halloween. I even shaved my head for it. Juliet Landau who played Drusilla was there the second day speaking about her time on Buffy and Angel and even acted out a scene as Drusilla for us.

The Gentlemen represent some of the worst villains of real life, well-dressed and smiling as they float by untouchably with their minions doing their grunt work. There are shades of rape, with the victims being held down as their hearts are taken. The Gentlemen thrive when the whole society is silent, and the only way to defeat them is to find your voice. I also love how nearly every single scene has something to do with communication or miscommunication, from the lecture at the beginning to Xander punching Spike.

This is certainly an iconic episode. Very clever. 23:02 There were definitely sparks between Willow and Tara. Some viewers in the 90s didn't pick up on it, but to most modern viewers it's pretty clear. 21:39 No, dorms are usually only like that on tv and movies. Some are even more ridiculous, like Riri's dorm in _Wakanda Forever._

I think this is definitely one of the worst villains on the show (in that they're the best / scariest, I mean). The Gentlemen don't make a sound, they're weirdly polite with each other, they look scary as hell, and they do the most horrific thing (cutting out a heart) while you're completely conscious, feel everything and can't scream. Talk about a nightmare. 😳🥺😧 When I first saw this episode, I was (appropriately) horrified and it scared the crap out of me. But it's such an amazing episode, because the majority of it has absolutely no dialogue, and they convey so much with expressions and joke looks and gestures to one another, and the kiss between Riley and Buffy (as you note, they can finally kiss instead of babbling nervously at one another), and the whole episode has this incredible tension. It's a well-executed episode. Plus, you have Riley and Buffy finding out about each other, and you meet Tara for the first time which is very cool. And Spike taunting Xander about Anya, which is hilarious. "Xannnnnnder..." "SHUT UP!" 😆🤣

The character design of The Gentlemen has stayed with me, haunting my nightmares since I first saw them nearly 20 years ago! It is absolutely brilliant, even if they make my skin crawl! Lol! I think The best episode of S4 by far. Brilliant innovative writing, The Gentlemen were among the scariest of BTVS monsters. The cast recalled it was actually exhausting to film with the effort that had to be put in talk but stay silent. The nightmare of being cut into and not being able to scream shown when the student is being held down while The Gentlemen extract his heart, really frightening. The comedy between Xander and Spike brings a little light relief, and also our introduction to Tara. A great stand alone episode. This is a brilliant episode but, I feel there are more in S5 and and in S6 that even eclipse this. This was a fantastic stand alone episode and fan favourite.

Creepy and funny from start to finish; one of the masterpieces of the entire run, with the monsters being killed by a logical weakness. And there we have it, one of the more creative and well executed episodes in television history and certainly in the series. I always love how the absence of dialogue revealed a lot that their normal means of communication couldn't. Some scenes that will always be classic: Giles' silent briefing on the Gentlemen (and Buffy's first guess on how to kill them... LOL), anytime Anya is trying to find out from Xander if she's more than just an "orgasm friend"..... just a great episode, and reaction to it as well D! a "hushed" CTU for you today! Keep em coming!

This episode is iconic!. It was written & directed by Joss Whedon, based on a nightmare he had as a child about a moster floating near his bed. It's beyond incredible for a great many reasons. The lack of dialogue, the choreography, and the way communication is stressed throughout. Buffy's dream in the beginning had the class being about communication. Xander couldn't verbally express his feelings, so kept deflecting. Buffy & Riley kept babbling without saying anything important. And Willow was in a Wicca group that was all talk. Verbal communication being stripped away actually helped them all communicate better. The addition of the fairytale aspect; the quarantined SunnyDale standing in for a far off village, the monsters, the subversion of the damsel in distress while also acknowleding it by having both Tara & Olivia seeing the monsters first. Willow & Tara saving themselves by joining together while Buffy is the Knight is fantastic subversion, but balancing it by acknowledging the past was brilliant. Even in the ending, Riley & Buffy teaming up to fight, Buffy leads, & Riley ends up misunderstanding her direction & smashes the wrong jar. Then, with a touch of that genius, creatively speaking, that Whedon became famous for, the monsters are defeated not by the fighting skills of the warriors but by a "damsel in distress" scream, giving it the power instead of a response to being powerless. Thanks for all the hard work creating these for us Dakara, have a great week!

Why would they need to explain it? Even the residence of Sunnydale who don't understand usually know thy live in a town they can't explain, but try to ignore or explain away oddball things, and anyone outside Sunnydale who doesn't know would assume hoax, as the newscaster said. It says a lot that Buffy and Riley still aren't communicating at the end when everyone else worked through their issues nonverbally. They have more work than all the other romances, and not just because it's newer. I never understood the creep factor people had with this one. To me, it was too much fun to be so, if that makes sense. Joyce is at home, not out of town. Buffy being at college her first year, just doesn't visit much. E-mail and cell phones weren't like they are nowadays. This was December of 1999. It was not common to have either. The internet was barley a thing and was still articles. Video was weak on it. The only thing they could do to in terms of the group from the other show was to drive down and that would take time. How it happened was the easiest and quickest way.

Remember Xander comes from a very unhappy and unhealthy home. Also, from a writing point-of-view, "you did turn into a real girl" is a way the writer can help tell the audience that Anya is a character that has transformed from a demon into a real human being-as well as reinforcing that this show is about growing up and beiong authentic.

Might be wrong but I think the first uk one was brookie? Idk long time ago and I don't even live there anymore... Nvm: Hush is basically one of the best episodes of any show anywhere at any time.....

Absolutely, they played Faith x Buffy as sooooooo gay. My headcannon is that Faith was super into Buffy, but repressed because it was the 90s.
