Here's a translation of the Maestro's description... "From a normal high-roof combination to a motorhome in no time at all. Put it in, buckle up, drive off. The box is 112 cm wide, 74 cm deep and 41 cm high when folded. When unfolded, the bed is 200 cm long. Total weight approx. 40 kg.Made of 18 mm multiplex birch. 15 mm would be better, but unfortunately it wasn't in stock in the hardware store. The drawer is made of 12 mm poplar and birch plywood."

@@bosong8017 If you choose A/B softwood construction plywood, most of the voids will be filled, but it won't look too nice. It will have one "good" side and one secondary side for not showing. You could paint it for appearances. Or you can choose cabinet-quality birch hardwood plywood, which I believe is what was used in this project. Both sides are equally good in appearance. Of course the prices will be quite different.

Yes! Way better design than mine. I also made the mistake of building mine before I had my new 2 burner stove (I built it to fit a single burner stove). The dimensions were wrong (I couldn’t nest the stove into the spot I intended). I ended up having to rebuild 1/2 of it. I also like the idea of making it lighter by cutting out pieces.

Great build and clever ideas - but: I keep hearing in my head "Wooden Pallets". Less work to customize and not as heavy as plywood.
@mertonallowicious
@mertonallowicious 2 жыл бұрын
@@kmooney1954 as a carpenter/woodworker over 20 years I can assure you the voices in your head are wrong… pallet wood is either weak junk or quite heavy. Plywood is widely used in construction due to its tremendous strength/weight ratio, however stay away from chip/particle board and Mdf- but don’t take my word for it get out and build something!💪

Sheer genius!! I've been thinking about converting a cargo trailer into a camper, but I think you've just convinced me that what I should do instead is build modular components and then have "tie-down" points in the trailer to strap them in, so they can be removed or swapped around at any time. Then if I ever sell the trailer, I simply take all the modules out and re-use them elsewhere.

It's an awesome little setup. If you could lock the bed in a partial upright position it could also work as a couch. See Ladi & Margaret's youtube channel for the season 1 van tour recap posted recently. One of the tours they cover had a bed/couch setup using ropes & cleats.

Watch Jarrod Tocci on youtube. He did a video on a van that uses modular components that he can swap out completely and replace at any time. He's got lots of videos so you will likely need to search. But it's really worth it. It's a older gray haird man and the interior is a darker gray hope that helps!

I've built a small square drop camping trailer, and I've been looking for ways to cut weight. For instance, replace large bulky 2x4 bed supports with thin white oak battons. Much less mass, far greater strength. I hadn't thought of using a high quality plywood and cutting out parts of it like that, and it's rounded so they won't split or crack along force concentration lines. Very clever. I'll have to steal that.

I camp in a small car.I put a plastic storage box behind the passenger seat and push the seat forward, lay the seat down also. I’m short enough to sleep in the backseat with my feet propped on the storage box. I put foam and a big blanket I got in Korea under me. The storage box contains a towel, bar of soap, wash cloth and when done using it is a dirty clothes bin. I keep another storage box in the trunk with dry food and a cast iron griddle. I bring drinking water and a water filter. Normally I have a small ice cooler. Normally I keep a Lowes or Home Depot bucket on me, a fishing rod and tackle box, basic car tools, matches and a tarp. I only bring what clothing I need for the moment. I have a small shower/restroom tent and a portable toilet. Yes a camp chair and cheap rag rug. It doesn’t take much for a weekend fishing trip. Sometimes it’s a week or 2 fishing trip. This box looks interesting if I get a van or truck. I drive the small Toyota because it’s easier for me to maintain and more cost effective to drive. It’s just me.

A good track saw will walk circles around a table saw all day, get a good one like a festool and you don't even need the offset board.

@@micahshaeffer I didn't know those existed. I might just get one.

The speed on the film left no down time, but the design made up for it. I like the custom layout and how it incorporated your sleeping area. Very efficient.

Do you offer plans for people? When I buy my new vehicle I would love to do something like this instead of a converted van

What a amazing project. I been dreaming of something like that for my car for some years now. Easy to stop were you want, to make some food or to sleep a few hour before you hit the road again. Just love it. Best wishes from Jan in Norway

@@PENTHESILEIA1000 hmm perhaps it depends also if you are living in the city or in town... I know a lot of people with more and bigger tools =) You just have to start, things like this are not so complicated once you ve started

Just bought the drawings, definitely building a modified version. Love how you have taken the weight out, i would never thought of doing that.
