Oh my god! The idea of using foam for the Outbound windows is genius! I was building very heavy wooden frames. I like this a lot!
@uglysjourney7 ай бұрын
Oh, Wow, these comments are very nice to get. Thanks! I searched, but did not find it, do you have a KZbin channel as well?
@mrt53936 ай бұрын
That’s actually fairly common in Europe. Windows mostly held in place by foam and metal strips at least for brick walls. That probably insulates the windows from the colder stone and heat isn’t transferring. Wood would be a barrier too just heavier I guess
@uglysjourney6 ай бұрын
Yep 👍😄 And I did use massive amounts of glue to stick the window to the frame. Indeed foam is for insulation. This just to be sure and I do not get sued for false information or anything 🫣

I considered this for my LMTV but holy CHRIST the WEIGHT... You're either a brave man crushing your truck with that or a lot wealthier than i am and can absorb it.
@uglysjourneyАй бұрын
Thanks for leaving your thoughts and comment! 👍❤️ But I am not sure I understand you 🤷. My truck is rated for 12 tonnes (kg). And I have loaded it to the max. Is this what you mean? On the other hand a LMTV is usually rated much lower than it can actually have. I guess this has to do with handling in combat situations. Is that perhaps what made you question? Anyway, please explain further 👍❤️
@EthanCasnerАй бұрын
@@uglysjourney Pretty much what i meant. I found out after i bought my truck that it might be rated for 12 tons but the Achilles heel is the driveshafts splinter like twigs under much less stress. And when they break they usually destroy the rear differential splines and the transmission differential. I hope you'll have good luck with yours. Definitely i recommend checking to see if your driveshafts are "hollow two-piece" and "floating" like the US version as that's the problem with ours.
@uglysjourneyАй бұрын
That is nasty! Hope you will find a solution ❤️👍. In my case the vehicle was sold and made as a 12 tonnes (KG) vehicle, so it will hold the weight, no worries 👍

Do you have some type of air filtration set up? As airtight as it looks you need clean air in it. There will be alot of humidity in the air from your breath,getting into the walls and woodwork. I guess you could leave a window cracked open or maybe the skylight. Also a container would make a great cooler and freezer. The survivalists would love this.
@uglysjourney7 ай бұрын
Wow, those are quite a few great comment and questions packed in a "short" text. Amazing, love it, thanks! There is no air filtration, we open windows, we have a CO2 sensor (never rang) and our heater uses the "moist" inside air and transports it outside. Also a home-weather station, which measures humidity, always a smiley face there, so it should all be fine. You are the second to comment on humidity and clean air. So there should be a link, a reason or deeper thought behind it. Do you know what it is? And yeah, I have talked to a couple of "preppers" who were very interested indeed. Thanks for your message and apologies for the long reply 🫣👍❤️
@Mikael-jt1hk3 ай бұрын
@@uglysjourney The humidity in the air at any given time is not really the issue. The issue is the temperature difference between the inside of the steel and the outside. You have condensation pissing down your walls behind that thin insulation and the cheap foam you used is probably wicking that water right into your wall boards. If you go somewhere cold for an extended period you will have mold in your walls. There is no two ways about it. Read about vapor barriers. We use them for a reason.
@uglysjourney3 ай бұрын
@Mikael-jt1hk sustainabilityworkshop.venturewell.org/node/1027.html I am quite sure I disagree. It is not possible for water to form on in the inside of the outer steel walls. That is because there is insulation there. It is all sandwiched against the wall and I have a high insulation value. 5 cm PIR (greatest r- value), 2 cm wood, and a bit of foam. When moisture would form is would on the visible side of the inside wall (on the wood). Please note this build is not like a house.... 😄👍

impressive build. just one remark if that platform in the back is supposed to be for a bed later on you should cut some slots into this so the mattress that goes on top of this has ventilation from below otherwise it will get moldy under the mattress.
@uglysjourney6 ай бұрын
Thank you! And always nice to hear constructive feedback! ❤️👍. I understand what you say and know some "horror-mold-stories". We solved it by having a few gaps below the matrass (not much indeed). So we added a "hospital-cover" over the main matrass. That will prevent moisture from reaching matrass 😄👍 we keep an eye on it and till now all is fine.

The weight of that container is nuts. 20ft has a tare weight of 2.5Ton. Recommend a fridge box with barn doors. Fully insulated dry and thus much less work. But a great little house non the less.
@uglysjourney4 ай бұрын
Thanks! 👍❤️ Yeah you are right, container has quite a bit of weight. But can I ask? Do you know the weight of a ready fridge box? Ready; so I can have a terrace on top, a bike back on the back and strong enough for cupboards. Hope you know so we can do an honest comparison. 👍😄
@johnbrown-so3vz4 ай бұрын
@@uglysjourney not sure maybe similar in weight but the fridge is fully insulated and the box is wider so that the internal size is similar to an no-insulated box. The roof should easily take a deck as it is a composite roof. Internal curtains are often hung from the roof and they are VERY heavy. The only roof I would question is single skin or transparent GRP.
@uglysjourney4 ай бұрын
Ok thanks!! So weight should be about the same. So the main pro and con is inside space (fridge is bigger) vs outside strength (container is stronger). Only main thing left to know now is the costs. The new container was €10.000 (incl window openings, VAT and paint). I did research (in Covid times) and found new fridge boxes are double that costs. Do you agree?
@jedics17 ай бұрын
Everytime I see a shipping container build I wonder what its really like in the coldest and hottest months to live in with all that steel conducting the temperature into the space? Would like an update about it once you move in for a while. I built something very similar and been living in it 4 years now and will never go back to a regular house, you won't regret it. Even if your heating a cooling bills are off the charts :) You went to a lot of effort to put a deck on the roof, are you not putting solar up there?
@uglysjourney7 ай бұрын
You will not believe how comfortable it is inside the container! With the sun blasting it stays nice in there until around 16.00 hour. After that it is the same temperature as outside. But I understand your wonder, without isolation it would have been unbearable inside. And the roof also functions as an umbrella. Architects tell me that thats the best way to keep it cool inside. There will be solar panels, but I have a trick up my sleeve. But that is a story for next time 🫣😄👍👋 Thanks for you comment and support! ❤️

Tip, rather than using expensive props to hold timber to the ceiling while the glue drys, just use a long piece of timber on an angle. Knock it in place with a hammer and it will act like a wedge between the floor and the piece you're gluing to the ceiling.

I like what you are doing, many good solutions. I bought a MAN 8.180, fully furnished 3 years ago, but i am planning a total rebuilt during next year. What fabricate are the hatches and windows? Good luck going forward

Thanks for you kind reaction!! 👍❤️ I hope you will have a succesfull build! The windows, roofhatches and door are from Outbound. I do not want to recommend them because of poor after sales service and the presence of a cold bridge in the door handle. Insulation and instalabillity is good And in any case I would not recommend the rollo-shutters (poor cleanability, easy to damage fly screen, bulky design, clunky operations). Hope this helps! 👍❤️

OMG well done, this is extremly hard for me to watch; with my ADHD. I just see, some tediouse repetetive stuff that I would need my whole days worth of ritilin to be able to cope with an hours worth of plank painting and hole filling. I am in awe of your meticulas details and some nice reward with a finished job.

@@uglysjourney it’s funny you should say you have OCD and that’s opposite to ADHD because my life only works in someways because my wife is OCD. She would be doing the painting and the whole filling whilst I go out and procrastinate about the next part of the job and how on earth am I going to be able to do it, and then she comes along and simplifies it. It works really well. I will be watching

Man Id be super tempted to live in one of these if I was sure it could handle a Canadian winter and I could find places to get water and dump sewage easily. Canadian isnt exactly the best for Mobile homes.

Yeah, thanks for sharing your thoughts! ❤️👍 I am not sure what temperatures you want to stay in? So it is hard to say something useful..... Our container is still comfortable without a heater on when it is about 3 degrees Celcius (almost freezing in Fahrenheit). I have seen people living in a boat that was surrounded by ice.....that is cold. And they manage because they keep the heater on.....
@yvesmartin8127 ай бұрын
well done, very nice work. here is my question: what is the weight of your container after arrangement?
@uglysjourney7 ай бұрын
Hello Yves, thanks for your kind comment and question! 😄 The container will be around 5.000kg, completely filled, incl 600 lit. water. Are you planning to build something yourself? 👍❤️

good morning, a simple question, why instead of wooden beads for the covering, didn't you prefer plasterboard?
@uglysjourney3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question! ❤️👍 I like using wood and I have experience with it. And I also like the idea I can put a screw in almost anywhere. So yeah not really considered something else. Why would you say plasterboard is a good / the right option? 👍❤️
@geasenergie3 ай бұрын
@@uglysjourney ,I was thinking about plasterboard as an option, but I have doubts that it could cause cracks due to the torsion of the container while driving on the road. What do you think?
@uglysjourney3 ай бұрын
Ahh, thanks for explaining. 👍 I believe I have seen people doing a sort of flexible plaster on a moving vehicle. And that stays on. I have used real tiles (glued all around) and they also stay on and do not crack..... I can imagine that you would use additional fixation for the boards? But yeah, no specialist here. ❤️👍

Interesting approach, i am wondering why you made a tounge and groove box inside, but no plumbing or electrical in the walls? Normally in a house you lay down under floor heating, hvac, plumbing, electrical and ventilation. Then clad, as this is a sealed system now and sleeping in it your CO2 levels are going to be an issue, sure you can open a window, ok if its 15-20°C but a missed opportunity given a shipping container is robust enough for being submerged at sea.
@uglysjourney7 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for your opinion and comment! To answer your question I could ask you to watch next weeks video, but will not do that. I will use a raised floor and internal walls to route everything. First this helps with accessibility (not so experienced, so can correct mistakes), but also enables me to build without an exact plan/lay-out. And second I wanted to have the insulation 100% intact. All in all quite happy with the results! The CO2 comment I do not understand. Can you explain/elaborate a bit? How is this container different than a room in a house for instance. Like to hear what you say, so please let me know! Cheers for the support and comments!! 👍👍🍻
@fraserwright94827 ай бұрын
Your own home has ventilation as part of its construction to reduce mold, damp and remain habitable, hopefully your house is not 6x2.5sqm A container is a steel box designed for cargo at sea and you are having 4 or 5 people inside a sealed box. Great for insulation, but a bit like breathing into a paper bag you raise the Carbon dioxide levels above what is normal.
@uglysjourney7 ай бұрын
When you keep everything shut yes, then you are right. But why would we keep everything shut? Even in cold temperatures we have windows open, works very well. And added to that we have a heating system that uses the "damp" inside air and blows that out of the box. All in all we are very happy and so is our temperature/home-weather-station, monitors inside humidity as well, always well within normal. Hope this helps and if not, then lets agree to disagree. Have a good day! 👍❤️

The only issue I have with this build is using a Conex box is the weight. This will impact the milage and suspension as well as the acceleration and breaking. Could have used a lighter solution then a steel box. I understand it is more convent and possibly a little cheaper but still so much heavier than this build needed to be.
@uglysjourney4 ай бұрын
Yeah, thanks for your thoughts! And indeed the container makes us about 10% heavier than we could be. I do not think that is much especially when I factor in what it all gives back ❤️👍. Coming week I will post a comparison video with the Earthroamer SX (same weight class and dimensions). You will be surprised when we compare it 😄😄
