@@willek1335 Not an expert, but when the dog was panicking when it fell in the pool being calm and holding the dog firmly helped calm the dog down. So it then could focus on swimming and where it was going. So that is a good situation. Trying to calm a dog who is frightened and shaking is not so good. As the dog could think being stroked and be talked softly to, could be mistaken as being rewarded for being frightened. So calming might not be a good idea. She wasn't just shocked from the fall. She clearly never goes in the pool or even any body of water. Otherwise she would have gotten in from the beginning and calmed down when the owner had her. But she was panicking the whole time and only had one objective, Get out of the pool. Ppl train their dogs to not get in the pool bc of hygiene and dog hair in the filters. Dogs instinctively know how to swim they don't need to learn.

Omg, every dog parent has had that moment of pure panic when their dog fell into a fairly large body of water and thought to themselves ‘wait, do they know how to swim?!’ Well when I was 12 years old I had this same reaction with my American bulldog Elly May (God rest her soul) and of course I jumped in immediately because I knew she most likely couldn’t. But unfortunately I didn’t remember that I too did not know how to swim! So there we both were, flailing around in the water, screaming our heads off, trying to save each other while dying. Luckily my brother was close by and this dude is a strong swimmer and he’s never skimped on lift days so he’s able to drag us both out. He gave both me and my dog a stern talking to about being careful since we can’t swim😅

Growing up I had aussies and one couldn't swim, he was a submarine and at the river we swam in (only 4 feet deep and slow moving) he would jump in and sink to the bottom and walk around until one of us saved him then he'd do it again rinse and repeat.

Huskies, being a species known to inhabit cold climates, hate water because they feel like they're going to freeze to death if they get wet. They can learn to defy that instinct, but their first reaction is usually to get out as quickly as possible. Mixed breed huskies don't always have this reaction.

One night when was younger my little lab was following me around a pool that was half empty and he went over the side backwards and this girl let out a laugh so loud everyone in the neighborhoods blinds had fingers pulling them down. He calmly swam until I reached in to get him out. He acted like I saved his life. Thanks for the funny memory.
