Due to her history Ziva is not the most confident Husky. Give her a thumb up or tell her how well she is doing off leash! I'm sure she will appreciate that! ;-)

I read a story about a man with a strong bond with his husky. Always came back. He trusted him completely. Then while walking in the woods, it saw a moose. He never saw his dog again.

The main thing to success is bonding properly with your dog(s) all my dogs have been rescue over 2-3years old and all have been off lead, the biggest factor in training a husky is the owners temperament, if you are calm so will your dog be calm, if you are excitable or panicky, so will your dog. If your dog doesn’t trust you, it’s not going to listen. My dogs have been or are on the lead only 5% of the time I’m out, I’m lucky in that I have two large parks with woods very close by but the dogs have always been more worried about loosing me than I have been of loosing them. The more distractions there are the better it is for training, training with no distractions will catch you of guard when those distractions appear.

Unfortunately we could never train our Husky off the leash, despite several rounds of obedience training and a real commitment to train her properly. She was absolutely wonderful in every other piece of training - the most well behaved and sweetest dog ever. However, even after being 13 years old and surviving two rounds of cancer (clearly getting old and weak) she never “chilled out” with the leash. One time she got off-leash and did the exact same thing she would do as a puppy. Bolt as fast as possible. No prey necessary. Nobody understands that sinking feeling in your heart and devastation when your husky starts running away. You don’t think you’ll ever see them again. And you absolutely won’t catch them unless they WANT to be caught. The only good part is that they’re very good with retracing their steps or coming back home when lost.

I let my husky off leash daily in front of our house. Almost always responds to me. I think the best thing you can do with your husky is follow a routine and keep a schedule. It makes it easier if you follow the same routine off leash as you did when they were leashed. Walk to the same locations. Let him go pee in the same spots. I tell him "no" when I don't want him to go too far... and he turns around and comes back. He's doesn't go after birds, squirrels, rabbits, or ducks and they're plentiful in our yard. He's even at the point where kids go by or people will walk their dogs past our house and Navajo will just sit and watch them.

Yes! My husky has been on a schedule since we first got her. I never let her off of it until she turned a year and a half. I noticed she stopped pulling on the leash after she was a few months and was always by my side when walking unless of course she wants to sniff things but one day last week I let her off leash a good 5 minutes away from my house and luckily she listened to everything I said! I could tell she confused and got excited at first which made me nervous but she luckily stayed by my side the whole time and I think it was her being on a strict schedule

Basically confirmed my suspicions. Huskies are independent as they come, you don’t call them or order them around, they behave like a pack. It’s instinct. I’ve noticed that with my husky, she just does the right thing at the right time, and I’ve learned to respect that as opposed to train her to follow my lead, it’s more like our lead.

I think you are spot on with this video! I requires patience and time, but is the way to go. The only thing I would add is really good name recognition. A dog's name should only have one meaning: Pay attention to me; I'm going to give you a task. I have trained name recognition with mine to where their name is a conditioned stimulus - their head comes around without them thinking about it. As you point out in your video, without their attention, there is no point in asking them to do anything. Their name is a good way to get that attention. I practice recalls many, many times during any given walk or hike. Their greatest reward is to be able to run off again. My Sibes have good recall as well, but I know where I can let them go and where I need to keep them on a leash because I would not be able to compete with the interesting things in the environment. I have also learned that letting one dog off leash at a time increases recall - they're not as brave to chase large animals by themselves, it's not nearly as fun to do such things alone, and there is the draw of the group to come back to.

My 1st husky once chased a herd of deer down a draw and another 600 yards over some flat highland desert.. I hollered twice. Once when she first took off after them, which was ignored. Then again once I saw her slow her pace and then look around. She never fully broke her stride back to me after the second recall attempt. I just had to holler nicely a couple more times when she was about 75 yards out and starting to look over her shoulder for the deer again. Her name was Nala and about 3 years old at the time.

My aunt nearby has two Pomeranian huskies: father and son. Wherever the father goes, the son follows. The son is stubborn but the father is more manageable. Thanks to the father taking responsibility, it’s easy to walk them as I always have. I am gonna have some trouble with my solo Siberian Husky because I can only afford the maintenance of one dog… hopefully the pomskies warm up to my Huskies because right now they feel jealous toward any dog I pay attention to, so the three of them aren’t friends yet.

that is not accurate, if both dogs are not obedient none will follow and return. thats why its very important to train separately until 100 success rate 😊 the worst practice is to rely on one trained dog to bring the other back!
@simonbarnes7620

1 is easier than trying to train two or more, as the dog easily distract each other making training difficult, the idea is not to train them and make them want to be with you, they have to trust you and you have to trust them (to a degree) and not be constantly calling them as they will learn to ignore it if it is for no reason.

First off wanted to say, amazing video, and your huskies are doing great! I know you're not a vet but I wanted to ask your opinion. Will this training method work for huskies when they're afraid of/don't trust/respect their owners? I adopted a mid-aged husky that we suspect may have been in an abused home :( He really doesn't seem to trust humans whatsoever, and while he isn't aggressive towards me, he seems afraid of me and is aggressive towards other people and other dogs. Will it be possible to train him for off leash this way, or will we have to earn his trust first? It's been a few months and he still hasn't warmed up too too much. Also, I unfortunately live closer to big cities so I cannot keep up the consistency of this type of training daily. He also has no walk training (and admittedly, I'm not very good at trying to train him how to walk. It's very frustrating.)
@HanVerdiHuskyRV
@HanVerdiHuskyRV 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Krazy Ki for your compliment. I guess it will be possible, but his lacking trust is probably standing in the way. And with this brand.... that might take a while! Especisally when he has been abused or neclected. Best advice is probably to win his trust, ánd take him to a good trainer to have a look at his behavior. How old is he, BTW?

Unfortunately not for my Husky. He's got good recall in a fenced park, but I live on a small island full of deer. Once he gets a scent, he's off. I guess it is possible, but I 'm afraid they will never be really good at it, with their very independant character. On the other hand, they certainly are smart enough! Good luck!

Ive had two Huskies that could do this. Both intact males. You just have to give them something they want in return and this is usually something as simple as your love and time to play their favourite game after they have done what you want.

I have always had dogs. From a Belgian shepherd, to pit bull, to two Pomeranians and now I have the two poms and we rescued a husky 3 years ago. They are most certainly a different breed. Very stubborn but loving.❤ Honestly you’d just have to have one or have had one or maybe dogsit one for a few days to really know 🤷🏽‍♀️

Sorry, but this is really misleading advice. You have several things in your favor. 1. Your huskies spend almost all their time with you. 2. Your huskies likely get plenty of stimulation. 3. You have access to controlled environments. Most people don't have all these factors in their favor, which results in a high adventure drive. Saying that this is a blanket off leash trick is problematic. The times my husky escaped, she was easy to catch when she was tired, or she even came home. The problem was that, until that point, she was in danger. My parents' lab was a true off leash dog, professionally trained, and proper temperment. She decided to go on an adventure recently and was killed on the road. Off leash is not a trick, it is luck, that is all...
