Guys. If you're sceptical I promise Joel's methods work if you follow them correctly. My reactive rescue dog met another dog today and they sniffed each other for a few moments before backing off and then minding their own business. Massive achievement for us and a big step on our journey together.

I live out in the country and walk on back rural roads. From the day I got him I taught him the command "SIDE." We're on a leash because we're on the road and he is a Husky, but after 6 years I don't have to say a word. If he hears a car coming, long before he sees it he's on the side of the road and stopped without the need for a command until the vehicle passes by. Not only is this safe for him, but with all the blind curves and trees where I live that's he protects my safety by his body language in warning me of an oncoming vehicle before my human ears are able to pick up the sound. If a vehicle is large, loud, approaches too quickly or too close to the shoulder of the road, he auromatically backs down farther into the ditch. For me, it's very important he's completely aware of any vehicle even if it is a motorcycle or a person on a bicycle the entire time we're on the road.

I have a similar habit with my lab pup, but say "car" as soon as I hear something, and she knows to sit on the shoulder. I am hoping she will eventually do it automatically if she ever gets loose on a road.

I literally cant believe how QUICK this method is. Its stupidly quick. My dog already walked off leash but only when we came back from the park (cause she was tired enough to walk next to me and not 2 meters ahead) + when there was no one around. (No dogs nor people on the block) Tried this today, and she understood it in less than 5 blocks! Now loose leash walking is a thing + we are on our way to teaching proper off leash tecnique :D Thank you so much for your videos! Im so glad I found you in youtube!

Yes, it will work for that. I had a huge black hairball (newfoundland/golden retriever mix) that eventually got to that point. Just do the steps, be patient, repeat. Add something new only when they are ready. Gus could run ten miles with me on my bike. Probably could have gone farther but that was the loop I rode after work. He was an awesome dog. RIP

Tried with my girl (7 mo cockapoo) first time today, she’s doing sooooooo well! I tried Zak George’s method since she was little, rewarding every time she checks on me and started with in the house then around the block but it never lasted passed few houses, the most I could get her to walk with no leaving/pulling was one block. And who has the time in the world to keep doing that every day, plus I want her to play and enjoy herself with other puppies? Soon I just gave up, because she’s little and even if she pulls occasionally it’s not dangerous and I always have control. I pretty much gave up on loose leash walking now, and she was always on harness because I don’t want her to choke. I still reward her when she looks at me while walking but it’s always whenever she felt like, not on my term. Very thankful to find your channel! I watched a dozen of your videos yesterday, and couldn’t wait to try it on Lola today. And you know what? We not perfect I had many corrections but she had her best loose leash walking with me challenging her stopping randomly, away from her interests and even on the field she plays with other pups! Very effective, efficient, and just simply works! Thank you very much!

Loving your videos! You touched on the end about the freedom in a park/yard vs off leash walks so would love to learn more about how to get them to behave in a yard. Your dogs aren't necessarily 'with you' in the pasture when they're playing so there is a difference. We have a barky neighbour dog that's always outside and would love to know how I can get my dog to be able to be free in the backyard and ignore him.

Hi Joel, I've recently found your videos and have really been enjoying the content. If possible, would you be interested in making a video that showcases some of your best trained dogs showcasing these behaviors (loose-leash/off-leash walking, recalling from play, etc. in highly distracting environments)? For myself personally, and maybe for others as well, this would be great to help set expectations and goals, as well as to serve as motivation when we see what can be achieved when the work is put in. Great video, I think the one thing that I might have missed is the length of the leash, it would be hard to give the dog the room it needs for corrections with a 5 foot leash and that’s what I see most people use. Also I love the fact that he said that you don’t want the perfect heel, it’s a lot of work and for most of us we just want a companion that will be well behaved.

I love your videos very much. They are always so clear and instructive. I am wondering if you can help me with this situation. My dog is almost 6 months old now (I adopted him at month 3),. We bonded very well and he is so attached to me that it's almost easy to make him follow me on a walk. The hard part is to get him away from me. I thought it was cute at first, but now, I sort of want to have my own personal space more. For example, at first when I was playing the piano, he would lay maybe 3 ft away from my piano and just enjoyed the sun shining through the window (and hopefully my piano). Then, starting a couple weeks ago, he would lay on my foot and it's a bit inconvenient because I needed to step on the pedal when I played the piano. Now, he even tried to jump on the keyboard when I play. When I walk around the house, I feel that if it's possible at all, he would stick his nose on my leg. Fortunately, he doesn't have very bad separation anxiety, so he is fine when I leave the house or when he goes to bed at night. However, during the day, it's just a bit overwhelming to me sometimes. When I am at home, I feel like I am the one that's been watched by my dog, not the other way around. Any suggestions? Thank you so much for making so many wonderful videos and tutorials.

I have a husky too!! Her name is Luna but my mom calls her Lunatic 😂. Once she gets her zoomies out she’s great. This girl almost broke me bcs she’d outsmart me. It took me 6 months of patience and training myself so I could be a better leader for her. I had to step up my game and really research dog psychology and huskies in particular. I made sure to socialize her asap but lucky for me she always had a great demeanor. You’re gonna make mistakes, forgive yourself, and grow from them. Also, make sure to protect your puppo at the dog park from other bad dog parents, make sure your pup understands you’re the alpha and will always protect them. I made that mistake with my last doggy by not stepping in when I should have. Wish I would have had these vids to guide me ages ago. Good luck 🍀💗!!

I didn't want to encourage him to go in the neighbors yard. To hooked the line on my hitch (kept him out of the neighbors yard and street) didn't take long n he was ok. Then I got back to my yard, and chose to leave him hooked up for that last few minutes. He worked the snap before I realized and was following me. I was shocked! He's half husky and knew he was off leash! I really think the loose leash work we've done is making a difference

I love this. I didn’t do well when we first got out Macey girl. Bad time for me, I was more impatient than teaching. 🙁. Not my true style. We are a pretty great team now, 5 years later. Anyway- what about when you’re walking in the woods? Is it ok for them to run ahead or behind a bit exploring, when they do come when called?

This video is gold! I didn’t walk my dog off leash, yet, but the fact that he walked next to me with the leash so loose and after the third correction he would stop when I stopped was amazing. I’m gonna take it step by step thou. Thank you by the way.

@@WollongongSkyWatch, perfect response Nym. I don't get how people miss these answers if they are watching the videos, serious about training, not skipping steps to save themselves time and energy-which never works for anything you seriously want to achieve. 🧐🤔🙄 Go figure.

@@User7688.--_ Thanks, but I think there is way too much anxiety in ppl when tackling dog training, especially for first-time dog owners. I've always had a dog, mostly two, and they never jumped up at ppl, and it wasn't because of dedicated training sessions - My children used to say 'down' and swatt them with clothing! My daughter worked in a Sydney pet food shop and would regularly encounter ppl confused over what to feed their pup as they couldn't see their particular breed on the food bag. Anxiety. Happy training :)

Thank you - Your method of leaving the house on your terms and the quick correction has been working very well. But, when a dog approaches she goes nuts and barks and hits the end of the leash and so I use the correction. She does look at me (yeah), I treat her - but then she continues to bark and reach the end of the leash yet again 😳 - and this is the cycle. Maybe it takes awhile? Would love to see a video of a walk when the dog continues to bark/hit end of the leash even with correction and your process. I’m probably doing something wrong. Sigh. Thanks for all your informative videos!

Maybe try turning around and walking back the way you came after the correction? Then treat after she come with you. I mean even if you go for a 15 minute walk back and forth in front of your house, its still a 15 minute walk and can desensitize them to things nearby?

@runner. Give no treats in bad behaviour. Now is your dog taking the anoyance, the correction, as it is as it is, no pain no gain, and see, your dog takes also the kibble, now you have a dog in a circle. He lunges or the gain is proximation or the gain is a reward in the kibble. And he starts again. You are training repetitive behaviour even if it is hard or painfull or terrifying. You are hardening your dog.

You are missing the main steps in Joel’s Loose Leash Walking method. The walk starts in your house before you even get to your front door. Start over, go back and watch all the loose leash walking videos. They all are different videos of the same method.

@@User7688.--_ Thank you. Yes, I have watched all of Joel’s videos. Everyday, we do start in the house and then move to the door and she is 💯 perfect! The walk is perfect loose leash until a dog comes along. But, it’s finally improving thanks to Joel. 👏👍

Nice useful video as usual.I started bringing my 12 wk Boxer out to Socialize.I was taking him to the Dog Park same time(12wks)In my arms of course.I stayed outside the fence.ACE is a high energy, over excited dog which carry in his breed.I stay in Seattle by Tourist attractions so it noisy, crowded. At 3mo.he was playing with older Pit which the leash unlatched. On one of the highest traffic street.I yelled come but he think I'm playing with him.I stopped Traffic on 3 sides an calling his name to come but no.The changed an most didn't go on green they didn't want to hit a pup but you have the ones didn't notice wat was going on r just did not. care.Ace finally Ace running over to mei started to grab him but Ace still playing an the metro bus Made a Daring stop. His eyes got real big as he looked at the bus.An me he new at that point he done something that maynot be right so he started to come to me anran of again. Now the People made a circle around the middle of the street.Thats wat saved his life.He eventually ran to a Tourist call an he grab him. I scold trained him.Everytime we come to a light corner we stop even if it say walk.In a month he totally understood. At six mo. he walk the same busy streets without a leash. Now he like to stalk birds, squirrels etc.an he is still n tact. But he look at me before he take off.No treats involve in my training 95%.I Kno it's a big chance for a Disaster even the best Attention I give him is not enough one blink an a tragedy can happen.Hard for me to not let him be a dog that he is.I lost 2 dogs by a blink of a eye to Automobile tragedy. One Boxer would never wonder in the streets but this one time she did an got ran over , left behind 7 pups.2nd I ran over my poodle she wanted to go with me.I let her out to potty an I didn't wait for her to come back. After I realize wat happen I picked her up I heard a crack from possibly her neck an that was it.Sum it up off leash in the city could be dangerous no matter how well your dog is trained but that's a chance I take cause he is so proud wen I take the leash off an wen I put it back on.Its like he get A & Bs on his report card.Ao I let him be a dog as much as I can.I didn't mean to wright this much an probably never again I got into my feelings.Keep feeding Knowledge to us
