I wouldn’t say *especially* BT or xcal. They may have been earliest, but they weren’t really trendsetters. Other people, such as Hutch, started doing gameplay commentaries of their own accord (not out of imitation of them) around the same time and became popular on a level they never did.

15:45 holy shit, the nostalgia! I remember watching hutches 1v1s on KZbin way back then and him being my favorite optic sniper. And at 16:09 hecz mentions Neverturnyourback (optic psychosis), who just so happens to be the first person I ever saw quickscope with a reg scope on cod4 and was the reason I got into quickscoping and the KZbin community. He joined mine and a couple friends private match on strike where we were just doing no scopes/quickscopes with the acog scope(cause that was what the cool thing to do was up until that point) and he came in with the reg scope and completely destroyed us! And he talked shit better than anyone I’d ever met lol (if you remember him from back in the day you’ll know what I mean). But that match inspired me to learn how to quickscope and got me into the community way back in early 08! Then a couple months later he ended up joining optic. I was an optic fan since the early days of cod4 and have been since. I even got a faceplate graffiti’d by hecz back in 09 or 10 and the video of it is still on his old KZbin channel HECZWE. I remained a huge hutch fan during those days a watched him and his channel grow. His commentaries, his camp hutch series, which introduced me to a lot of great youtubers. I can still remember the chills I had when I watched the video of him announcing that he was moving to LA to work for machinima and him saying that his dream was coming true and that he owed it all to his fans and feeling an overwhelming sense of pride that I was a part of that. And then watching him on respawn with sark and seananners. And nowadays I still watch his stream on twitch. I haven’t thought about these memories in quite awhile and just caught a stage 4 case of nostalgia and wanted to share them.

Maybe I have the timeline wrong and of course I dont know contractual agreements with machinima but I believe he left so much money on the table because he took the job there as soon as things started to explode and stopped posting on his channel. As he came back the views never recovered, too much of a break. Opposite seananners who arguably got even more popular with his short videos. I mean hutch probably still does/did okay I guess.

When Modern Warfare 2 came out I was only 12 years old and I did not get it right away after the release date. I bought it approximately after 5 or 6 months after it came out and honestly I never had such fun with a game before (obviously because I was only 12). But the other day someone posted a video about "how MW2 changed life of American (and European) youth" and I must agree. I live in the Czech Republic, so the options back in the day were not great - I mean for gaming and recording your gameplay. I started watching Machinima dudes around 2009 and I knew that I wanna make videos in a similar way. This dream become true in 2012 when MW3 was kicking hard and I uploaded videos regularly for 2 years straight. I did not gained or achieved anything special - for my small community of subscribers (I made commentaries in Czech) I've always done videos with passion and I had fun doing it (I reached about 700 subsrcibers and some videos had a lot more views than the sub count). What I am trying to say is that Hutch (and a lot of others - Sark, SeaNanners, H3CZ, ...) had a huge impact on fans lifes - not only in the U.S. though. Even the small Czech Republic had some of those fans. This "era" of KZbin will have a great impact in history I'd say. Great podcast! PS: Sorry for my verbal diarrhea.
