Hello there.... that’s a great video... I used a few of your tips rebuilding my power steering gear.. the ball bearing part installation instructions was very difficult. There’s a much easier way to do the bearings. Just assemble the unit... then Feed the bearings in chrome black as instructed in your video. As you turn the input shaft back and forth, the bearings will go into the housing and worm gear easily. Then assemble the remaining bearings in the cage with grease. Tie strap it. Then carefully install it in the housing . Strap, bolts and you’re done. 👌

What about the different colored bearings, they don't matter? The order of the colors does not matter, did you put one of one color and another of another? Or first the dark ones and then the light ones? thanks greetings from mexico I have a jeep cj7.. great video great help😀

The balls move 360 degrees in a circle. What you start with doesn't matter. Just go dark, silver back and forth.

When installing the teflon ring on the piston, boil some water with the ring in it. The teflon ring will expand enough to install without stretching it and shrink tighter to the piston so that it can be installed in the case later. I forced it and ended up scoring the cylinder making my box trash.

Good info there. If I ever do another, I'm going to try that. Thanks.

If you drive the seals down with the snap-ring on top of the stack (once you've driven the stack of seals and washers below the end of the snout), it will snap in place and prevent you from over-driving the seals.

Good idea. It seems obvious now that you say it. Next time :-)
@hutchhiperf11 жыл бұрын
It should work if done correctly. The installation of the stub shaft and worm drive comes first on reassembly, so it would be like you did that part already. Take your time and test it thoroughly when completed.

Check the comments. There's a link to the vid on my FB page. The ball bearings are in a loop so it doesn't matter where you start, just go every other.

I have a question about the reassembly of the gear box. I never took the shaft apart. Just popped the ring and cup off and pulled the piston out. If I repack the bearings and then put the piston in, will the gear box work properly, or do I have to take the shaft apart as well?

Isn't it easier to put ball bearings in through the side access before installing the ball guide tunnel with the strap and the screws?

How did you remove the plug on the end of the rack piston?
@hutchhiperf2 жыл бұрын
If I remember, I used a 3/8 impact and hit it once to break it loose. You could also wrap it in a shop towel and use a vise to hold it and use a wrench or ratchet to get it off.

Have a Saginaw 800 apart from my 98 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 , it was a rebuilt unit fromAdvance Auto Parts two years ago, never been happy as holding the wheel straight it would let truck dive to each side of lane on highway when everything else seems tight, Also only finding 11 black and 11 chrome bearings....do i slap it back together with that number or go find another unit for parts?? And how do i know when the unit it filled up with bearings?
@bigpig419 жыл бұрын
tom johns do you need to make sure that the spirals inside the piston are completely filled up with bearings with no space between them; and then comming up to the level surface of the piston where you are inserting them(both holes) and then up into and completely filling the two halves of the guide with no space between??? otherwise do you cause the spiral shaft to be able to wiggle back and forth slightly which allows the two gears to get apart slightly causing PLAY in your steering???
@hutchhiperf9 жыл бұрын
tom johns I had 24 total in my 800 (12 Dark and 12 Silver) these should go in every other. You may have to research your box and see if 22 is the norm. Mine was a stock box. There will be a little room in between the bearings, so they don't have to be packed touching, just all in the groove.
@bigpig419 жыл бұрын
hutchhiperf have the piston filled with all 22 bearings with the guide made up of the two halves bolted in place and it is completely filled with 6 bearings; when you look inside at the greased bearings you can see the two sharp tips of the two halves of the guide sticking out into the spiral groove on the inside of the piston....they form kind of a stop or help corral the bearings up into the guide with their sharp tips sticking out into the groove in the inside of the piston . Well, with all the 16 bearings that aren't in the guide packed up against one of these sharp stops on the guide and then all the slack removed from between the bearings it looks like there is space for exactly TWO MORE bearings which I don't have and wern't in the unit when I tore it apart(did your monte carlo unit have any space left in the spiral between the two sharp tips of the guide after you placed all those bearings in there?)......makes me wonder if those two were there if i woulda had less play in my steering....although i have to admit the adjustment HAD to be way off on my unit b/c i hadn't had a chance to see inside before and see what your actually adjusting......Thanks for your help
@hutchhiperf9 жыл бұрын
tom johns Every place I find a rebuild vid or pictorial, it shows 24 ball-bearings. Not sure if you can find them sold as a pack of 12 dark and 12 silver, but I would look around first.

@hutchhiperf4 жыл бұрын
@@anaandthomas5166 Sometimes there will be a difference in the appearance of replacement parts. Have them open a box from a different manufacturer and compare. If they all look the same, that's your part. Probably only two or three places make that bearing and multiple companies package it with their name on it.

Does the grease used to hold the ball bearings contaminate the power steering fluid?
@hutchhiperf10 жыл бұрын
Not really. Only enough is used to hold the balls in place. I used synthetic grease, others have used petroleum jelly. Either way, it's not a lot. After installation you can perform a P/S flush if there is a concern of contamination.
