Very niice job! On the water, I noticed your jib luff was not fully tensioned, it was sagging away from the forestay. Also, the clew outhaul on the boom end was not hauled in enough, which made the sail baggy, and shifted the centre of effort aft, sailing upwind as you were, resulting in excessive weather helm. That's why you had so much water pressure on the rudder because the boat's bow was being forced into the wind, so you had to steer to leeward especially in the gusts. Very tiring. Get your sail shapes right and I'd bet she'd sail as good as she looks. Greetings from Nick, beside Southampton water, U.K.

My first sailboat was a ComPac 16 sailed her on Lake Erie bought it in Detroit area 2008 ish. Great Boat. One was sailed from Fl to Bahamas and back so very seaworthy. The C16 was to small for my family so I moved up to my current boat a Montgomery 17!!! 😂 I’ve had a couple others in between up to 26’ but..the bigger the boat the more hassle and less you sail IMO
@dave80399 Жыл бұрын
By chance do you remember the sail number? Because my first 16 was also in Detroit and I sold it before I left in 2007.
@georgewashington7444 Жыл бұрын
I don’t recall offhand. But the one with a brown stripe in your video looks awfully like it! I bought it from a mid-50ish couple in a Detroit suburb.. I sold it to a guy in his 60s from maybe Tennessee but don’t remember for sure. Anyway that C16 looks fantastic! I’ve always wanted a M17 and drove 20hrs round trip last September to pick it up. It is in pristine condition 2007 model I’m debating on rebedding all deck holes with epoxy/butyl tape but see no water ingress and may wait until next season and just sail it this summer. I am also building a IMO ultimate costal cruiser Matt Leydon Paradox that I plan on cruising from Florida to the Bahamas with spring 26’ so much to do so little time!!!

Nice video. I bought a $300 Starwind 19. She was surprisingly solid but heavily encrusted with barnacles and oysters. Plan to see a launch when she's ready.

You're right, great boats. I'm on my second Com-Pac. You really did a first class job on your 16. On my CP16 I removed the control head of my trolling motor and sent the shaft up through a through-hull. Worked like a dream. Great vid. Thanks. 👍🏼#147

Great video and narration. So, there's another Compac 16 for sale up in Michigan, I'm in Oklahoma, and the few available are 14' or 22'. I think a 16' Daysailer like yours would be a good first large boat, but would it be worth that kind of haul, and since it's not easy to inspect up there? I'll watch for more content. thanks

Nice resto fella, cute mini weekender pocket cruiser, puts me in mind of the Macwester Kelpie from the sixties and seventies built in Macwesters yard in Littlehampton Sussex on the river Arun The Kelpie was built in several versions with the day boat being the prettiest.. Two things first your plastic anchor chain feeder should point sternward facing the bow as it does is a recipe for aquatic disaster in a sudden squall. And two being thirty odd years older than you I would not be happy unless I had that boat over on her beam ends and powering along in the gusts. seems to me you have two options change your rudder design or extend the tiller. You could try buying yourself a breakbarrel air rifle a lot of shooting will strengthen your left arm. yea I know thats three, better sign out now before I come up with more.

Great video! I have an 87 Compac 16-3 that I am loving except the tiny cabin. My last boat was a Morgan 22. I notice you are able to sail with your bimini up. I have a stock one but it is too tall and hits the boom. I thought about putting in a reef and raising the boom. Did you say you cut yours down?

I am working on some repairs to a sailboat now. I wish you showed more about how you opened the boat up. Do the Com-Pacs have much plywood down inside the hull? Also how you fasten it back together. One more question: do you like the motor mount, it looks like one I am considering on Amazon.
@dave80399 Жыл бұрын
Once you bust apart the scene and lift the top from the bottom, you'll find only a couple of stringers down below. They need to be replaced and you can put it all back together with rivets. I actually used epoxy caulking on the scene in addition to the rivets so I will never be able to separate it again haha
@gregpalmer9949 Жыл бұрын
So you just use prybars? Does it come apart just because it is old? Motor mount?

I'm going to restore a 16' Roy Green Rebel. 1954. And that gel coat doesn't say it contains wax. Gel coat won't cure without some sort of protection from the air wax or PVA. What did you try. Or not try.

Your solar panel will fail. They are flexible for installation, not suitable for flapping around on canvas.
