Good work again Joe. Sikkens is a great product. I often use 3M pads for scuffing between coats---they have a product for that purpose--although it doesn't look as good as using 220, there's a lot less cleanup. Maybe it was urban legend but I understand years ago Tiara was persnickety enough to require all the wood in a given boat had to come from the same tree--IMHO that's overkill. It's a boat and not a crime if every piece doesn't match. Your Skipper 23 looks interesting.

Great video!!! I have a 1988 catalina 22 with weathered silver teak. I have one question after watching, in 12 or so months whats the process for recoating? Take all the wood off the boat and repeat this process, or just add a coat with wood on the boat.
@motorcityboatwerksАй бұрын
Good question. If you follow my method you should get 12+ months maybe as much as 18 or more. To recoat: You leave the wood on the boat sand lightly -tape off the deck for spills and then just recoat in place.

@motorcityboatwerks thank you sir!

2 more questions. 1: how do you know when it needs recoating? 2: when recoating, am I just going to add 1 application of the top coat gloss? Or will I be doing base coats and gloss coats?
@motorcityboatwerksАй бұрын
Top coat gloss always has to go on base coat. You will have to judge for yourself when and how many coats you’re comfortable with. 🤓

Excellent video. Thanks for sharing Your expertise. I am looking to restore the teak benches on my sailboat, but I am not sure if making it with Cetol won't make it too slippery. Do You have any advice for that?
@motorcityboatwerksАй бұрын
Welcome aboard 👍😁 It won’t be too slippery😂🤣the smoothness of the surface is directly related to how smooth you sand it. Follow my instructions. Don’t worry you’re going to love it 😊

Nice enough for me, but have you ever considered wood bleach? It might offer you answers on problem peices in matching wood. John's Furnature Repair and a lot of other channels have covered this,
@motorcityboatwerks6 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment 👍. But not mixing and matching different species like mahogany and teak. This process is about fast and easy long term and easily repairable 😁

How about using teak oil? Trying to avoid how varnish and cetol chip off
@motorcityboatwerks3 ай бұрын
I hear this suggestion a lot 🥸Teak oil does nothing to address the texture of the wood over time and just prolongs the inevitable cracking and splitting. 🐙In addition teak oil is not a viable solution for wood that has already weathered or mix matched. 👎Wood that has weathered and already turned gray with exposed grain cannot be restored with teak oil. 👎
