I don't care what anyone says Johnson is easily one of the top 10 heavyweights to ever fight. Put him in any other era than the early 1900's and allow him the stuff the other era fighters had and he woulda been just as solid as he was in his era. He had a ton of courage and stood up against idiotic social trends and had the nads to run his mouth and back it up; he was a loudmouth way before Ali even dreamed to be one. He also helped evolve boxing from a sport from old fat and skinny dudes to a sport of people in shape and made it an event.

@@7dayspking You should read how the media and the audience treated Jack Johnson during his bout with Burns in Sydney and subsequent fights. They were so fucking pathetic and insecure that they made a 'Great White Hope' to groom a white fighter to beat him, unable to digest the fact that a black man is the heavyweight champion of the world. The only 'white' people who supported him was his support crew, his mentors (including Joe Choynski) and his girlfriend/wife. Not saying that they were all racist to him, but the amount of hate that he had to face was shocking. Which makes him an amazing fighter because he had to be physically, mentally and emotionally strong to be the champion that he was.

Jim Jefferies is crowding Jack Johnson trying to smother his punches and render them useless. That's what a fighter does then he knows he cannot take many of his punches. It's an ugly way to brawl, instead of to box your opponent. I used it, when ever I had an opponent who boxed better than I could and I upset them by never giving them the space needed to perform their techniques gracefully! They key is, you have to know how to box and to brawl just as Jack did!

One could say that modern day boxing has come a looong way. I see stuff in that fight that makes me say "oh that's not very sporting". But, I'm also aware that in 1910, boxing had come a looong way from where it had been in 1810. 1810 of course being the 100 years refined version of the 1710 "boxing". How rad would it be to "Watch" a Mendoza or Molineaux fight? I'd love to see the Broughton vs. Slack fight, as I appreciate the "bad guys" in boxing; for the emotional investment in seeing them brought down, and them administering a double dose of life's cruel reality, when they straight up *Starch* the good guy. I can only imagine how different boxing/pugilism must've been in it's early years.😞

Just as in 90 years people will see things we see normal now and say "WTF, how people in 2020 did those things back then?

Like how Jeffries was old here, Fitz was old when Jeffries beat him. How would prime Jeffries do against prime johnson? Who knows, but I bet prime Fitz beats them both

Johnson made$65,000 for that fight, which is a little north of $2,000,000 in today's money. Not a bad chunk of change, but Jeffries including his signing bonus made almost twice that as the losing challenger. That's 1910 for ya

He was OUT of the ring for 3 years, working on a farm...and what do YOU think they did to unwind after that??? MANY would smoke,. drink..,etc....and he admitted that he did smoked several packs a day and he lost over 100 pounds to train...but he was just outclassed by Johnson who really ddin't trained MUCH for this bout..and I NEVER said he was past his prime...but if he did trained more, the match wouldn't had gone as FAR as it did over a century ago....

First of all, Jeffries wasnt smoking cigs as you claim. Second, Johnson wasnt past his prime. He had just won the title not too long before that.

I guess text Rickard was anti Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt did have boxing experience while the others mentioned did not.

Ironic: in 1909 the first black heavy weight boxing champion Jack Johnson. 100 yrs later 2009, we have the first black president of the United States. Like the fight. The voting was pretty much about race.

At 9:55 Johnson does something not very legal, I never noticed it before. After he hits Jeffries with a left hook if you watch and rewatch closely and slowly those seconds you notice he pushes Jeffries out of the ring with his hands. Use slow motion and see
