I did plumbing and fell in love with it. I am a violin teacher for children. I got into HVAC and I fell so inlove with the science of it. I love the hard labor of plumbing. So HVAC is like a combo of both. Really wanted to thank you for this video I've been learning so much.

I am licensed HVAC/Refrigeration contractor. Didn't go to the trade school, learned everything on the go. I enjoy my job, like to see happy customers when their freezer/ice maker/AC starts working again. Yes, it is a difficult job because of the physical and psychological pressure, but it fits me well..

Ty, I agree with you that learning is a life commitment. Technology changes constantly and we have to adapt. You only can learn from somebody that has knowledge and it's willing to teach. How many times we hear " I have been doing this for 30 years". If you were doing something wrong for 30 years that doesn't make you an expert . I don't think everybody is capable of teaching. It would be great to have more instructors/techs like Ty, Craig Migliaccio, Bryan Orr and few others that really like and know how to teach and communicate. Thanks
@love2hvac3 жыл бұрын
That is true. it use to be 20 then 25 now its 30. I often wonder do they have 30 years experience, or do they have 1 year experience repeated 29 times. When someone says 30 years to prove a method is best I cringe. I know at that point its not about best practices, its about ego. We all have an ego, but when it gets in the way of learning its a problem. I have also meet some brilliantly smart people but they dont know how to communicate all that knowledge. Then you have the ones that don't have the information and also cant communicate. But there are great instructors all across the world. Very smart, great communicators, still learning, and they care! I have met many of them. Sadly they are unappreciated, unrespected by the schools they teach for. They will be remembered by the good students they taught and live on in those practices. unfortunately many have been broken down by administration and thir lack of understanding or care for the trade. They are broken down by the classes the admission reps filled for their quota. the 20-30 people that where convinced to sign up for one of 100 reasons non of which where to be in a trade. Those great instructors retire, or return to the field. The school will replace them with recent graduates or that inexperienced one that just needs a job. I see this more and more every day and it makes me sad. I love this trade and without the leaders and educators it is in danger. I cant change the schools, I tried. I have been inspired by my friends Craig and Bryan. We can still teach, still make a difference. Its a different type of class, a different type of communication but sharing the same love for the trade.

Thank you Ty for all your knowledge! I started my hvac career 4 years ago and I love it. I too have no formal hvac education, only school of the hard knocks, but youtube channels like yours are my saving grace. I do commercial install and repair on heating and ac systems when I'm not plumbing. I have a leg up being that I work for a plumbing and sheetmetal mechanical contractor and I got lucky when our only ac guy quit 4 years ago. I got my 608 certification and now I'm going to start on my NATE certification. It can be done without formal or technical school but it is challenging.

High schools for years have been promoting "go to college, go to school" so we have been programed that is what we need to do. The for profit schools have spent a massive amount of money painting a picture of trades school looks like. I don't think a lot of people understand how the for profit trade schools work. They are certainly selling an image but very few are delivering the education. I have spent thousands of own money buying supplies so students can the hands on. So many schools will only alowe 1 4 hr session for brazing. How much skill is built by doing that 1 time? I have multiple times taken classes about to graduate, and nobody ever taught them how to check superheat subcooling, add recover or vacuum a system. I've worked for schools that allowed only 16 hrs to understand everything electrical. I've seen schools that never taught how to change a thermostat. Many schools don't teach anything with digital gauges. I've taught at schools that hired graduates and janitors to teach the class. So when someone has to pay back that money and all they get is an EPA card with no abilities to do anything it grinds my gears. When schools say "we are a business first that happens to be a school" I have issues with that. When schools say "it's all about the education" but in reality they just need them to complete to collect the loan money, it is a problem.

Hey I’ve been involved in mechanics, mechanical , building and electronics since I was young. Im retired and now want to get involved in the world of HVAC. Before Covid I contacted a local School for HVAC class. I was always a saver so money wasn’t an issue. The recruiter guy I spoke to pretty much told me I wasn’t a candidate because of my age (50’s) Heck I’m up and out early and can run circles around these younger guys. Right now I’m working with a small company as journeyman so to speak and owner appreciates my work & devotion to the cause. I’m self taught and watch instructional video’s to keep up. The Owner/Boss will be signing me up for several classes.

I myself am switching careers in hopes to eventually have my own service business. I decided to go trade school route 3 month program so far I am finding it very beneficial. If I was 18 again I would probably still choose trade school. I think it gives a good foundation. Couple that with having a helper job in the trade. For me I was an auto mechanic and now currently in sales. I think that helps me understand everything. I am also the type of person to go beyond just what the school is teaching me and invest in myself reading books and watching videos of people working on the units and I’m getting to the point I can think about what I would do if I was there what I would check next and see what they do. Anyway I digress I think these trade schools are important for some people such as myself. Great video ty! I’m a student at NTI and watching your videos haha alittle discouraging seeing this video half way through my school I have paid for but again I think this is the right route for me and that’s what’s important.

In CT, you must go to school and pass a very extensive test to get licensed by the state. Two forms of school acceptable. Technical college for hvac or state apprenticeship program which is a 4 year program for the better unlimited license. You can't get a job here without a license,unless you get hired as an apprenticeship
@love2hvac3 жыл бұрын
In CT if you can find a contractor willing to hire you as an apprentice. Then you must register with the state’s Office of Apprenticeship Training. School is not mandatory. Yes you can get into HVAC without going to school. the schools, especially the for profit ones do not want people to know this. Even if you go to a school you are still required to participate in an apprentice program.
@HVACRTECH-833 жыл бұрын
@@love2hvac somewhat correct. Not fully. There's no way to bypass the apprenticeship program but if you go to a trade college like new england tech ect. Then that takes care of alot of your school required to complete the program. It's not fair but I know a few people who have done it that way because essentially you only have to do two years of school instead of the four I and most people had to do.. An apprenticeship here means 4 years of on the job hours plus 4 years of school at night after work. That's for my s-2 license which is the best hvac license cause it's unlimited. You must pass all classes and complete your on job hours in order to be eligible to take your test for license. There's no way around that in this state at least. Trust me. No matter the route you take, it's still going to consist of many classes and on job hours
@HVACRTECH-833 жыл бұрын
@@love2hvac maybe we are having miscommunication lol. Maybe it's my fault. No you don't need to go to hvac school to get into the trade. You do have to have high school diploma or equivalent though so we could argue that lol. But.... once you get hired, legally you have to become a registered apprentice, and Osha will check apprentice cards if they are having a bad day, I've seen it. At the point you become an apprentice ,your classes begin for 4 years. Unless you only want a d-2 which is only 2 years but you won't have luck finding a job with any less than a s-2 license.
@love2hvac3 жыл бұрын
So I think there is a misunderstanding here. This playlist is about ways to get started in the trade. This video is about the ability to get started without going to school. I make it very clear that learning and education is very important. You said " In CT you must go to school and " To get started in HVAC that is simply not true. It's great that you found a good school but you also need to know the for profit schools are scamming students out of billions nationwide. They want students to think that paying big $ for their program is the only way to go. They are all not dele wrong the education needed, nor the supplies, nor the qualified instruction to have even the basic concepts of What's needed in the trade. I never mentioned way to go around the apprenticeship program. The video on apprentiship will be coming soon. Yes world wide schools are available. yes learning is a must, Yes individual places have hirer requests than others. No school is NOT a requirement in most of the USA.

I think it's hugely beneficial to at least take a basics course. I have people who have been working for a couple months and couldn't make a 20 on the EPA. I learned all the basics in school and will learn the details on the job.
@love2hvac3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend a community college or not for profit program. Too many of these for profit trade schools are out taking people's money and not providing the education that is promised. I do think it's highly beneficial to understand the basics. If you pay to sit in a packed class to have someone expand it, read it yourself, watch videos on it, it's still learning. As for the EPA grade, that comes down the the individual. I've had plenty of students take 1month to 2 year course still make 20's in the EPA.
@mitchellarmyguy25153 жыл бұрын
@@love2hvac I definitely agree. My 1st semester felt awesome. Learning so much new stuff, and I'm 36 with tons of mechanical and oilfield experience. But this 2nd semester feels like a for profit. I'd recommend a shorter packed full of information type program over a degree program. Also people will need to put the work in regardless of the program. Because while I feel I learned a lot so far my other classmates are still really struggling to grasp the basic concepts. Your videos are beyond amazing for that reinforcement learning. Where you have an understanding of the material but need another perspective to really drive it home.

Will supply houses sell you refrigerants if you just have a EPA certification?
@love2hvac3 жыл бұрын
That is a great question! The answer.... It depends. If your working for an HVAC company buying for the company, yes. If your on your own with just a card, probably not. They are Wholesalers that wholesale to the contractors. Even if you wanted to buy an electrical part like a contactor they usually don't sell to the public. Even if you work for a contractor buying for a contractor and go to a supply house without the company having an account there its possible they wont sell to you. Yes you can legally buy refrigerant at that point but it dosent mean the location ahs to sell it to you. I have heard there are some online companies that will sell and ship with an EPA 608
