I was tutoring several students with basic wiring this week so I made this video for them to review. If you where not in class this may be confusing. It is long and dry but covers some of the basics.

The low voltage fuse is going to protect the transformer and protect the low voltage wiring from becoming a heater and catching fire in the event of a short. Low voltage shorts are verry common.

hey great lesson, ive got no issue with what you covered. But one thing i do need cleared up is with heating stages.. say your home has 2 thermostats, 2 zones, one is calling so it initiates that first stage of heating, turns on the respective elements etc. what I can't grasp is how the 2nd thermostat engages the remaining elements... because both thermostats just come into the unit and terminate from there and use the same switching components, what turns the remaining elements on in that full call for heat where both levels of the home are calling for heat and all elements get energized? looking forward to hearing from you
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 4 жыл бұрын
If you use a 2 stage thermostat it will have a W1 and a W2. W1 would power the the low voltage load of one sequencer that would close and pass power to say 2 heat elements. If the temperature of the room drops below 1.5 or 2 degrees of the set point it will close and energize W2, that would wire to the second sequencer, that would close and control another 2 heat elements. There are many way to wire this. Many use a single stage thermostat and only 1 (w) will power all the sequencers at once. Or you can have a 3 stage that can power 3 different sequencers individually
@andrewthacker114
@andrewthacker114 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent teaching. Thank you. So the sequencer brings on the indoor fan during heat cycle , I was thinking the sequencer only brought on the heat .
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 2 жыл бұрын
It depends how it's wired. Some manufactures used the sequencer to bring on the heat and the fan and others used the thermostat to bring the fan on with "g" get imal to energize the fan relay and the sequencers only operated the heat elements. I will be recording the entire electrical series soon. (Hopefully)

With the sequencer, why would turn the elements and the fan turn off at the same time, because there is residual heat, so why wouldn't the fan stay on for another two minutes let's say?
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 4 жыл бұрын
It is possible to wire it in a way to do just that. Theybtypucally done because customers do not want to feel a draft of "cold" air. When the element shuts off the temperature would very quickly drop. Also there is little heat to regain, only seconds worth. A gas furnace is much different and requires that off delay.

Hey Ty! Hey on a real system should the 24V common of the transformer be chassis grounded? You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find the answer to that question.
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 5 ай бұрын
There is no requirement. My opinion does not matter, as the equipment gets a UL rating for either way that I chose so I CO back the way it was. It's alternating current so the electrons are moving from R to C with 24v of pressure then back from C to R with 24 v of pressure changing 60 times a second. When the C is grounded the case becomes part of the circuit. Personally I don't like that and it gives really weird reading when troubleshooting. But again my preference does not matter. I can say that c can be grounded but it is not the same as ground. Imagine if the house used ground instead of neutral, electricians would loose there mind, but it seems to be 1/2 normal for the 24v system to do that.

30:06 - Aren't the heat strips supposed to de-energize before the fan, so the fan is still blowing the residual heat through the ductwork?
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 2 жыл бұрын
On electric heat, typically no because it ends up being a "cool draft" complaint from the customer. One manufacture added a time delay on the fan for a few seconds for effecency. Some new ecm motors accomplish this as the motor ramps down. The air in the duct traveling approx 720FPM. We are talking seconds. With a gas furnace we want to run the fan for effecency as there is still a lot of heat energy traped in the heat exchanger. The second reason is to cool the heat exchanger. This is why the much longer and usually adjustable fan off delay on a gas furnace.

I just had a really high power bill…Two months ago the blower motor quit working indoors ..I had a company come out and they installed a new sequencer , and Evidently wired it so every time the blower fan comes on the heat strip comes on ..Even if you run fan only the Air handler was pulling 22 Amps at the panel box…so the heat strip has been running saveral hours a day for the last two months …what did they do wrong??? I had a different service tech from a different company come out yesterday and he figured out the sequencer or time delay relay was wired wrong ..he put in a different one and everything works fine..
