I know I'm a little late to the party but I would have tested the heat package for a stuck relay/sequencer or broken and shorted element that would create heat you could not see. The heat package was on the blower outlet so it would not affect your refrigerant pressures. It would only affect the temp drop (capacity) and the electric bill. Keep those videos coming!!

Had one the other day 9° changeover somebody parked the low-voltage auxiliary heat from the thermostat on with the compressor terminal so when the air was on it was sending the low-voltage to call for heat also fix that problem and now it's getting 19° changeover. before we start thinking, equipment replacement, let’s accurately determine what’s going on. First step is to measure the temperature in the return air compartment at the package unit and the leaving air temperature at the unit, also laying your temperature sensor on top of the supply register is not the most accurate way, you need to insert it into the register to prevent secondary air, mixing with the primary air as it exits the register. I recommend you return to the job and measure entering and leaving air temperatures from the machine. Then if you accurately measure the air coming out of the ductwork and it’s warmer, you can prove the heat gain due to the poor insulation.

@berated4541

I have a feeling even if you take your temp splits @ the unit you’ll still only get about a 15 degree delta-T. Which won’t satisfy on hot days. Without knowing indoor and outdoor temps it’s hard to say if those temps are “in the neighborhood” so to speak as far as LLT and SLT and so on. Since it’s a package unit we assume there’s not too much airflow across the coil, which would give you low capacity. I would look closer @ the compressor, if you wanted to fix. With that said, with that old of a unit, complete replacement is more economical long term.

At least you knew the temperature drop of 12°. I had an AC tuneup done yesterday and as the guys were leaving I asked so what was the temperature drop and they’re like oh we didn’t check that. They just checked the refrigerant level pressures and overall condition of the system. Said I needed a new contactor on the AC and also my evaporator coil was getting rusty but not leaking. They recommended getting a new unit. 🤣. My evaporator coil is six years old and the entire system is 13 years old, and it’s working just fine, why replace it? After they left, I cleaned my outside condenser coil because they didn’t. Next year I’m finding a better HVAC service company.

When I go out on a service inspection we inspect evaporator coil and we always clean condensing coil from inside out with foaming coil cleaner and then we check pressures checking pressures with dirty coils makes no sense vacuum leaves and debris out of bottom of units put drain cleaner in condensate drain let's set for 10 minutes and flush with water while pulling vacuum recommended service once a year if your guy is not doing this he is not maintaining your system but then again the guys that come out for thirty bucks they can't do that kind of service the service inspection we do that I described runs $120 bucks

I don't like package units in residential at all. Some of those are better off with mini splits or window units. In a typical house, the only way to go is with a horizontal unit in the attic with good returns and at least two of them with filters located at the register. Mobile homes are a different animal of course...sad that is.

Is an old compressor the culprit of lower capacity on hottest days? This plus last 2 years I’ve had to “bump start” it with breaker upon first start for season. So far has started by the fourth try. The delta T on SA & RA maintains 15-17,18 F*. My package Ac unit is 36 years old. Cools fine during low to mid 80s with off cycles, but near 90 and over and it will run 5-8 hrs. Still keeps house at 76-77 and same temperature split, just won’t satisfy T-stat to 75 for shut off. Edit: 92* ODB and it just satisfied T-stat.🤷🏻‍♂️ Maybe adding the insulation for ⬇️ drain issue helped. Plus some issue with condensate drainage. VERY slow drip,if any, but purges/drains just fine as soon as unit shuts off. Has a p-trap and pan tested for leaks by duration of time to hold water when full. Had this issue last year so I added some insulation to inside of evaporator compartment this spring. Seen a slight improvement with some dripping now where had none last year.

You must address the question with the homeowner if the system worked correctly in the past. If it has lost heat removal capacity. That means something broke suddenly if it was working ok and then stopped gradually or suddenly. From my minimal understanding, it looks like the system is overcharged with high subcooling and a loud compressor, but I think i saw a small receiver inside so idk.

Definitively is an air flow issue. Depending on the static pressure on the supply and return, you can determine the size of duct you need on the supply and return. If the duct system is a radial one, you can add a supply and a return or upsize some ducts. If the duct system is an extended plenum pr a reduced extended plenum, you can upsize the trunk and leave the branches untouched. Worst case scenario, install a new supply in a room with two exterior valls. You have to run the metal new ductwork not flex because of the excessive external diameter. Ex: rule of thumb - 10" metal approx. 12" flex. 10" insulated metal with aluminum bubble wrap is 11" and 12" flex is 14" outside diameter. Thank you.

@@paulshlasko3608 If is not enough air, you are correct.But if is too much? The duct system could be leaky on the return and is pulling warm and moist air from crawl space. Low delta T over the evaporator could be a result of a partially clogged metering device or a restriction in the liquid line. Not enough refrigerant arrives in the evaporator. A partially clogged metering device or a restriction in the liquid line will back up refrigerant in the condenser, the result being a high subcooling. A false one. If the restriction is eliminated, the system will be undercharged.

I think the new chemical cleaners are weak. The older stuff had way stronger and stronger pulled out the dirt.

I remember back when i worked as a school cafeteria dishwasher. We used this degreaser that foams on contact, which was just like coil cleaner, since it had a similar odor to it. And that stuff could dissolve rotten or burnt on grease and grime like it was water. The thing is you want to wear disposable gloves while using it, because it will sting like heck, if you get it in even the smallest cut on your hand.

Yep..I have a new Mitsubishi mini split system, it’s silent, even the outdoor unit, super efficient, I’ve never seen a blower wheel turn so slowly..it blows my mind, in addition to cold air..ductwork eliminated..!

@@johncspine2787 how big is your house? How many rooms are you cooling? Is it a single or multi-zone? What size is the unit? What state do you live in?

@@user-ln7of9gs4s I’m in a western facing two story set into a hill, two stories facing a brutal sun. Utah..107 at height of summer, but we really only have about a month or two of that, and this is my first year with the unit, I had Mr. Swampy before, it actually worked great (25+ years) until the power cord melted and started an attic fire. Let’s see..I think it’s a five head, 3.5 ton unit, but only installed four heads for four main rooms upstairs, the 3 ton wasn’t available so we upsized slightly. Can always install 5th head ..later. Or maybe the next owner can.. (Ceilings were all torn open to get rid of smoky insulation..yeah..that’s about as much fun as it sounds like..made installing the linesets a breeze) Problem is the thermal mass of house, even times of year like right now, even if it goes to 58 at night, the glass in the house plus absorption makes the house hot, so it’s weird to have the unit still cooling when the outdoor temp drops. You have to though, or it’ll be too warm inside. It’s so strange, I grew up in the humid south, air conditioners are supposed to be loud, and blowy..you set these things fans on auto, you don’t even know it’s running hardly. I love controlling each room..you can set different temps and it’s perfect, or just turn off sides of the house (East v west) when not needed. The outdoor unit never gets hot..just warm, and the fan turns just enough to dissipate it, ramping up or down as needed..and even it is super quiet. I think I have two 9000 cassettes, a 6000, and a 12,000 for the hottest area. I have a Trane XV95 furnace as my primary heater, had that probably 15+ years..fire power surge blew its transformer and board, and burned out a power strip in the living room. Whether the power surge caused the fire, or the other way, I’ll never know, the insurance never sent an investigator, or even an agent to the house.

Don’t think electric heat element/s on with 61degree supply. Wouldn’t hurt to see if one element is shorted I need to know ambient temp and rather it is a txv or fixed. What was the return temp in house also

A 5 kW strip would be enough to cause a negative temp drop. So, I didn’t check it.

What size is the ductwork? Kinda looks a bit small. Might due reducing the available CFM and that is causing lower effective temps at the register.
@JohnSmith-ug5ci
@JohnSmith-ug5ci Жыл бұрын
If the ductwork is causing the problem, then you should be able to shoot it with a laser thermometer and see a small amount of loss on the outside of the duct insulation. It will vary down the length of the duct. That being said I would NEVER suggest a new install on that old ductwork. That is asking for trouble. You are correct about 12 degrees drop at the register being too low. If it needs fixed quote a proper fix, NOT a low ball bid that cuts corners and still have possible issues. You and the owner will be far ahead if you do this.
