Thank you very much for this video. My HVAC service tech told me to keep replacement capacitors on hand because the price for him to replace a capacitor is close to $400. He showed me the service cost estimate. The capacitor in my unit has a label and I bought the capacitor for $14 off amazon about 6 months ago. Upstairs heat stopped working overnight. I tested the capacitor (after disconnect removed and breakers turned off) just like in this video. Capacitor was bad. Total time to replace was 25 minutes because I was being careful etc. I saved close to $400 and upstairs heat wouldn’t have been repaired until the service guy could get here in a couple days. This video is super helpful.

My Amrad 50/5 cap failed last year. It was 7 years old and I didn’t have a spare. The local HVAC tech had one on his truck $125.00. Believe me I appreciated him getting here and getting the AC fixed so quickly, and I told him that while handing him a big tip. However, I did order the exact capacitor on Amazon for $30.00 and will have my spare ready whenever this one fails. I really enjoyed the video and will honestly say you’re the kind of tech people want to work on their HVAC systems because you take the time to look everything over and see if any other potential problems are looming.

I learned long ago to have spare parts for every appliance I own/have. AC/Furnace, freezer/refrigerator. By spare parts I mean the common parts that go out, I once lost 600 dollars of food when my freezer failed because of a 26 dollar part and it took a week to get one in, no one in or near Omaha had one in stock. I have also had my kids needs parts for their ACs, I just happened to have one in my spares and then just reordered it at the cheaper price.

Don't rely too much on the multimeter to tell you if your run capacitor is bad. My heat pump died last night, and it had an 8 year old capacitor in it. I checked the run capacitor as shown in this video, and it was actually slightly closer to being on spec than the new one that I was replacing it with. However, when I replaced the capacitor, the problem was fixed. (I always keep a spare fresh run capacitor laying around. They are cheap, and it's such an easy fix.)

Great Video. I have a question. I live in a 1500sqft condo in NJ. I have a central air. Rheem HVAC. It gets hot in summers. Especially, I have cathedral ceilings and sun-roof (skylight) in the living room. I set-up the thermostat at 70. And outside is 80. After running for almost 4-5hrs temp does not change. The living room is cool but the bedrooms does not get enough cooling. What could be potential reason - Air Filter (checked it is clean) - Capacitor - Dirty Condenser coil - Refrigerant. Just wanted to know before I call a technician. To see if I can DIY. Especially Air Filter, Capacitor, Condenser coil. Last time, I called for maintenance it set me back $700.

I did use a turbo 200to get my 45 and did hook herm to the highest (25) and common in the center. And my fan. Of course. Now if I were to hook up to 5uF and the motor said 7.5uF. Situation. An AC unit I opened up to test has 2 capacitors. a Dual 40/5 uf 6% and a single 5uf 5% The Dual only has connections on 2 of the posts (yellow on Herm, Orange and Purple on Common) and not on the 3rd post (Fan) that measures 5uf. But the single 5uf run capacitor has 2 cables connected to it (brown and yellow). My question is... Are the 3rd terminal on the dual capacitor (that rates 5uf) and the single capacitor interchangeable? I.e. if the single capacitor fails, can I just connect the cables to the Common and Fan ? If so, which cable goes to Common and which to Fan? Not sure if a repair guy took a shortcu there. But the dual capacitor was wihin range on both the fan and herm posts.

Did you try spinning the fan w/ a screwdriver w/ the A/C on and see if the fan would keep running? The run capacitor is different from the start capacitor. If your fan keeps going, the start capacitor is bad. Does your top fan come on w/ the heat (do you have a heat pump?).
