Allied bombers took a shit kicking before fighter escorts were added, or when they didn't rendezvous with their escort at the right spot. Each bomber carries 8-10 men - mostly 19-30 year olds... and there are 4-5 ACTUAL live rounds (bullets) between each visible "tracer" line you see.

The B-17 was a crap aircraft. A bomber converted from a civilian airliner. Slow and carried a small payload also very little in the way of armour. The crews were it's only saving grace. A Lancaster bomber using only 2 of its engines could easily outpace a B-17 flying at full speed. The Mosquito carried almost the same payload was faster and could reach almost as far. The essential role played by the 17 was to be the bait that would draw the German fighters into combat where they could be destroyed.Bombing targets was of secondary importance.

Why don't you ever get to see the flash/ tracers of the .50 cal guns from the B17s/B24s??? Especially from the tail gunners .50 cals ??? Legit question....I see this in every videos like this....im sure the US gunners used tracer rounds as well as the Germans...ANYBODY ON THIS PLEASE???????
@hw97karbine Жыл бұрын
The tracer element is at the rear of the projectile, which makes it less visible from the perspective of the target as opposed to the shooter. Consider also that the defensive guns and their operators would frequently have already been incapacitated by the attacking fighters, it was relatively rare for a bomber to be taken out by a single pass.

@hw97karbine I am an experienced shooter for 30 years and have fired tracer rounds from rifles as well as pistols....the tracers I've fired ...the nose was painted with the chemical to make it visible....ive never seen any projectile with the chemical on the rear of the projectile ....but I've never ever seen any muzzle flashes from any of the .50 cal guns on the B17s or B24s ...granted the films from WW2 gun cameras are very grainy ....i sure appreciate your answer to my question....it just has bothered me for awhile

@@neilgoldstrom6312 have a look at this analysis, we can see the B-17 gunners are firing because of the smoke from the guns but no flashes or tracer rounds are visible in the film: imgur.com/a/tDwlo Here is a cross section of a 50 cal tracer bullet, as you can see the tracer compound is in the base of the bullet: i.imgur.com/NuB26hG.jpg

Clearly the Germans didn't mind putting up flak even though their own aircraft were overhead.
@hw97karbine10 ай бұрын
It's worth noting that some bursts that can be mistaken for flak are often explosions of Werfer-Granate 21 rockets launched by the aircraft themselves or heavy caliber cannon shells that would self-destruct if they did not strike a target after traveling a certain distance.

95% of the aircraft caught in the flak cloud were American bombers, so it wasn't that high risk

These are all collected from newsreels so not exactly "unseen" footage, but it's better resolution than one will normally find at the moment.
