Allied bombers took a shit kicking before fighter escorts were added, or when they didn't rendezvous with their escort at the right spot. Each bomber carries 8-10 men - mostly 19-30 year olds... and there are 4-5 ACTUAL live rounds (bullets) between each visible "tracer" line you see.

You know the bomber is done for after a dozen or so shell flashes and the Luftwaffe pilot disengages. Those weren't novice pilots taking pot shots at 1,000 yards. It took big ones to do frontal assaults or take out the tail Gunner and move in...

It's truly sobering to think these machines are filled with the young men of their respective countries, the "cream of the crop", the young people that were supposed to be learning and growing, finding jobs, settling down. Instead, they battled to the death in the flak shattered skies over Europe. Even the ones that lived would see a part of themselves die forever, their youth and innocence wiped away in the flash of the gun barrels. Terrible.

I've viewed many videos of B17's being attacked, many with the German right on their six but have never witnessed any return fire from the B17's, even when there flying in formation? The loan wounded B17 stranglers are most likely out of ammo or have injured crew which is understandable. Maybe tracers weren't being used? Just don't know.

The B-17 was a crap aircraft. A bomber converted from a civilian airliner. Slow and carried a small payload also very little in the way of armour. The crews were it's only saving grace. A Lancaster bomber using only 2 of its engines could easily outpace a B-17 flying at full speed. The Mosquito carried almost the same payload was faster and could reach almost as far. The essential role played by the 17 was to be the bait that would draw the German fighters into combat where they could be destroyed.Bombing targets was of secondary importance.

Let's look at the facts Goober. Lancaster top speed: 282 mph; bomb load 14,000 pounds Boeing B-17 top speed: 287 mph; bomb load 17,600 pounds Mosquito top speed: 415 mph; bomb load 4,000 pounds. You literally got EVERY fact wrong. Brazen ignorance on your part.

@@rattymouse O.K. listen up Sally. The B-17 had a rated cruising speed of 282 mph. Fully bombed up and armed that fell to 180 mph ,its internal bomb load was 45000 pounds. It had an effective range of 1600 miles(return). These are real world figures. It was a shit aircraft. Half of all B-17's that saw service in Europe were either destroyed or were so severely damaged they were written off. One in 200 Mosquitoes suffered the same fate. Now depending on altitude the 17 and Lancaster were poles apart . Below 15000 ft the Lancaster was much faster up to 20000ft they were similar and above 20000 ft the 17 was slightly faster. Still nothing compared to the Mosquito. The payload of the Mozzie was 4000 lbs.Incedently the Max. Bombload of the Lancaster was the 22000 lb. Grand Slam bomb. So when you start slinging statistics about.GET THEM RIGHT.

@hw97karbine
@hw97karbine Жыл бұрын
The tracer element is at the rear of the projectile, which makes it less visible from the perspective of the target as opposed to the shooter. Consider also that the defensive guns and their operators would frequently have already been incapacitated by the attacking fighters, it was relatively rare for a bomber to be taken out by a single pass.
