This is why it’s so important to pay attention and importance to the first digital logic class you take. There was a lot of trickery done in that class that you wouldn’t see the point to but if you actually truly learned the concepts, you’d be able to tackle something like this on the spot

Hi Kevin, Thank you so much for being here! You make a great point. We often see candidates who trip at the most basic questions and that ruins their entire interview process. Cheers!

Thank you. Undergrad here, I’m happy I was able to design a circuit with 5 NANDs :)

You could've stopped at 5:18, (you already have an expression for nand gates only as one can be used as inverter too :-)). Trying to optimize the number of gates could, however, be appreciated by the interviewer.

That's how i did it. A nand gate with one of the inputs (e.g. B = 1) works as an inverter.

I would never waste 15 minutes in an interview on a question like this. So many better questions about metastability, synthesis and coding. Hundreds of thousands of lines of code in an ASIC and some fool is making their own XOR instead of using the standard cell library. Six years in wireless ASIC and 25 years in FPGA experience speaking.

Clearly, after "25 years" you've lost touch of how to assess candidates. A good interviewer will establish a baseline of knowledge to judge all candidates equally. The fact that you believe this question is beneath you and rely on "standard cells" demonstrates your lack of problem solving abilities and creativity. Whoever decides to throw their "years of experience" in a comment means they're very much insecure about their own knowledge. By your logic, it's not even worth asking a candidate how a transistor works since, according to you, "it's so basic" and "that's what the simulator is there for". Thank you for stopping by though!

Hi Tala, Thank you for stopping by. There are many companies from tech giants to small startups where you can do internships. We suggest a quick google search. Cheers!
