The 2D character animations were done in TvPaint, and the 3D background was modelled in 3ds Max and textured with Photoshop.

Very nice! I absolutely love how far 2d computer animation has come!

My answer to this is that he rendered out the 3D background out as a scene into PNG sequences. Then, he brought it into a video editing software like After Effects and merging it with the 2D animation. Correct me if I’m wrong?

wrong, they used TV Paint for 2d animation, the 3d background was made with cubes and then they either used Projection mapping or UV textured the buildings. Basically background came first, camera movements second, animation 3rd

Ye but you usually export it out in a png sequence just in case something goes wrong with it being rendered. So you're both right.

I agree. Rendering as png sequence is more easier to work with, given the fact that I'm just learning animation with Procreate Dreams.

Well played! I like how you merged both sketch and 3d render for the background. I'm both a 2d and 3d animator, this seems a worthy goal to aspire to, merging both worlds. I'm glad I stumbled across this, looking up backgrounds.

Amazing! This is one of the few cases where this really feels *natural* and *not* like trying to put a round peg in a square hole. Fantastic! I wondered though, haven't you considered doing both in Blender (Grease Pencil), that's the one app where you could to 3D and now 2D frame by frame or rigged animation in one. Maybe that'd be another interesting test (I can't wrap my head around Blender's convoluted UI, so I'm sticking with Moho… for 2D).

This is something I want to replicate with the new animation software I have in my head.

The kind of hybrid animation I like is when one character is in 2d and the other character is in 3d. Something like out of Iron Giant or Deltora Quest.

See THIS is what kind of animation i want to see in theaters not that emoji movie/shrek/minions/frozen crap thats shitting on the big screen these days (you know like what most modern anime is doing to give the illusion of realism while also still letting you know it an anime as well as what the mlp movie tried to do but failed due to low ratings) (btw im wishing tp happen in the next despicable me movie where the minions burn alive or get a blood transfusion that kills them like the toys from toy story or spongebob in the 1st spongebob movie quote from max headroom: cuz their just souls waiting to be recycled once again)
