Rotoscoping Over 3D Animation with Grease Pencil | Blender 2.81

Hi folks! It's Shenuka with my first tutorial.
I decided to try out rotoscoping over an animated 3D model in Blender using Grease Pencil and sharing what I learned with you.

Team Miracles by the way I would like to see you to try to make a 3d back ground (there are a few ways to make 3D look 2D in blender) and animate a 2D character inside that 3D space. this is assuming you have the time to do it

I'm learning Blender, whilst also teaching myself how to draw, but I never thought about using them both together for sketching the human form in different poses. The use of an armature like you've done there is much more useful than using an unstable wooden armature on my desk. Nice work! 👍🏻

It would be amazing if you share the workflow in more detail, for ex. Layer distribution, fastest way to order layers and different color fills, shadows and highlights, etc. The real struggle behind every stroke and frame. As always, amazing and very useful content! Thank you guys

I want to share a setting if you want the reference 3d model not be a distraction when you paint. viewport overlays Geometry toggle-> Fade inactive Geometry -> adjust the value.

Thanks :) Yes it is possible by adjusting the Alpha of the material (Material > Surface), and changing the blend mode to Alpha Blend (Material > Settings)

Not yet! You can easily fill areas with the fill tool, or draw using the fill and stroke options checked for the brush tool. That will create a lasso like effect and the color will fill in as you draw.

-Do you have a tutorial on how to navigate within Blender? im only used to Maya controls. -Also, do you know if it's possible to import an animation done in another program? For example, I have a team working on a film now but most of my animators only know Maya animation software. Is there a way they can export their animated scene (animation of the camera included) into Blender, so that grease pencil is the only thing we have to do in there?

- We don't yet! :/ We do have a video on tools for grease pencil though, if that helps... - About exporting: Not directly, but you can try exporting your model from Maya to a universal format that Blender supports such as .abc, .fbx, .dae or .obj and then import into Blender using the File > Import menu. Use either of the first two if you have an armature and .fbx preferably if you have animation data and see if it works? About GP Animation: Not sure what you need it for, but you could render the 3D animation and import it and do the grease pencil animation over the planes. Sort of like a postprocessing step...

zaya14 if you want to edit the animation yourself, and draw on top of the animation, then you’re pretty much screwed. iPad doesn’t have many good 3D animation AND 2D animation tools, especially free ones.

Sorry we don't use ipads, so we're not very familiar with the softwares that are available for use.

Maybe, but the intention was to create a 2D frame by frame animation. For this, the 3D model doesn't have to be well animated; just enough to get the proportions right/ the angles for the artist :)

Yeah, that's the default object.. for Grease Pencil. There is also an empty grease pencil option.. Why not check it out. It's free and under 200MB
