HSVTOL technology blends the hover capability of a helicopter with the speed, range and survivability features of a jet aircraft. Bell’s scalable family of HSVTOL aircraft systems is critical to future mission needs and serving the next generation of warfighters.

The vertical lift on the F35 isn't only accomplished by redirecting the exhaust - it also has a lift fan that runs off the engine that directs thrust downward. It's the case on the right in the picture of the F35 engine system at 3:37

As w/ anything, maintenance concerns & durability. The failure rate goes up exponentially which is driven by complications caused by parts count. GR8 vid, didn't see this coming. Blade folding isn't new but the application is. Many thanx 👍👍

Remember the Whisper crafts in the 6th Day. Those were beautifully designed and conceptualized hybrids. And they looked like they would be practical in the real world - they were so well designed. Now they just have to work out how to make them. Maybe electric motors for the fans. And then the slight problem of upscaling them.

One of the biggest problems for American services is arbitrary limits placed many decades ago. That limit helicopter speeds. If aircraft travel faster than a certain speed then they became an air force project. These arbitrary speed limits were stupid outdated and were supposed to prevent inter service competition and stop duplication of effort. And keep air force toes from getting stepped on. It prevented the Army and Marines from looking for faster more capable solutions. For example helicopter wings that folded back into a Delta wing configuration while turbo jets provided high speed thrust. Or drone type thrusters that just lift a fixed wing aircraft ten feet up where other propulsion takes over. The air force insistence that they control everything over an arbitrary speed has really hurt the ground forces. Who need support. Something like an A10 that could VTOL and hover yet fly super sonic when needed, with laser systems. This is quite feasible yet never developed. A structural small capacitor battery pack that could power thrusters for takeoff or lasers for protection from missiles or taking out drones. Mean that less ammo and heavy guns would be required. So a very good weight tradeoff. Also electric compression on jet engines could dramatically improve efficiency and allow faster spin up for quick operational readiness. Once in flight these electric motors would turn into generators to power lasers and charge batteries and capacitors. There has been very poor thinking on this type of craft.

There is an interesting design of aircraft, but they rarely talk about it, because this thing is secret. The topic of pulsed plasma thrusters has been developed since the early 60s (see PPT - Pulsed plasma thruster) - they are usually designed for spacecraft. But we will talk about a little-known design - these are plasma propulsion panels for aircraft, where the same Pulsed plasma thruster, but reduced to the size of a pencil and stacked in the form of cells in the panel. The design resembles a conventional plasma TV screen, where there are also discharge cells that activate the glow of pixels on the screen. And plasma propulsion panels have long discharge cells, the arrester has a railgun architecture (just rail contacts or coaxial), and the ionized discharge air is accelerated there by the Lorentz force to enormous speeds - a kind of ramjet engine is obtained. Just imagine! - tens of thousands of small ramjet engines assembled in a panel and firing plasma synchronously with a huge frequency (hundreds of kilohertz). Thus, plasma propulsion panels create lift by pulsed emission of plasma jets from railgun cells. There are tens of thousands of cells in the panel, they shoot at a frequency of hundreds of kilohertz, a huge pulse is obtained, and the plasma swirls the air into toroidal rings - the aircraft is held on this air cushion. Horizontal acceleration is created by the same plasma panels on the sides of the device (they glow, from the side they look like "portholes"). Such devices like "triangle" or "disk" have been observed for a long time, they are mistaken for alien ones - but these are terrestrial devices. They are classified and used for espionage and secret actions. Pulsed electromagnetic technology generates microwave radiation, therefore it is harmful to health. They rarely fly - only military missions. Therefore, they are not suitable for a citizen. This maintained the secrecy. Now they are already declassifying - many people know about this secret technique. When declassified, they will be used for cargo airships. But there is a danger that they are now going to be adapted to deliver small nuclear charges to decision-making centers - such means of delivery are not specified anywhere, are not conventional. This lowers the threshold for starting a war. It would be necessary to declassify them as soon as possible.

I see you are a university guy though, so maybe it is not Schizophrenia hahaha. I hope you are right. Though I fear not, why would we be developing these hybrid engines, or even rockets if we had these supposedly effective plasma railgun thruster array thingymajiggys... (as I understand it current plasma thrusters are so weak they're only really useful in space with low friction resistance or in research settings)

Sounds like Schizophrenia to me. Not the idea - the ion propulsion has been tested and the problem with it - very little trust and enormous energy consumption. But what Pavel wrote is a good example of mania complicated by conspiracy. A typical pair. Very frequent on the Internet.

Consider the conservation of energy. The exhaust of a plasma thruster will be ejecting lots of thermal energy just like an afterburner, but unlike a jet engine that directly uses energy-dense fuel, you need an electric generator that would be at least as big as the jet engine or an incredibly heavy battery.

The plane could literally do VTOL. i.e. The plane can be in a vertical orientation at those times. The tech is sufficient now since the last time they tried something like it. Ask SpaceX. Otherwise. For fueled options, what you want is two fuel tanks. The main one, and a smaller one. You want to be able to rotate the entire engine with significant degrees of freedom. But that makes supplying fuel constantly challenging. On the other hand a long distance plane doesn't spend all that much time actually VTOL'ing. So the rotating assembly can have it's own small fuel tank that supplies the engine while the rotation prohibits direct connection to the main fuel tank. Enough to complete VTOL operations. And is filled again whenever the engine is rotated into it's default orientation (at which time the connection to the main fuel tank can be restored). Much better than extreme thrust vectoring I think.

STOVL jet aircraft might be inefficient power wise, but not production wise if such engines are already proven and mass produced. After seeing this video, I'm surprised there aren't designs out there using the F135 engine. I doubt such aircraft will be heavy lifters, be they might make good assault aircraft.

@i-love-space390
@i-love-space390 2 ай бұрын
You are falling for the hype generated by aerospace ignorant reporters. The Osprey is really less of an aircraft and more like a helicopter. If you compare its record to the Blackhawk or the other large helicopters or to the Apache, then it is no contest. The Osprey is safer than all of them. If you compared it to fighter jets in the 70s it would probably be better too. Today's aircraft are simply extraordinarily safe compared to years ago. For its capability and its similarity to helicopters, its safety record is just fine.

Can a turbine generator supplying capacitor or battery banks actually deliver on electric propulsion for aircraft? Or is the hybrid weight penalty not worth it, or perhaps the energy losses are too much?
@jtjames79

There's a couple of hybrids out there and the performance is amazing. What you really want is a sustaining ICE engine that supplies just enough power for cruising. And the electric motor gives you enough for climbing.

BHARATHIA corporates should invest in aero/jet engine technologies for totally BHARATHIA ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES AND military hardwares and also attract aviation high technology scientists, both working/serving or retired to achieve this at an early date, quicker time frame. Better still buy out aviation designing firms and corporations having ownership of such knowledge and technology and patents.

From the title of your video, I was expecting something different. That is- why not an electric aircraft with a jet engine electric power unit and smaller battery storage for power and range? It seems like this "hybrid" powertrain would be superior to a battery electric aircraft in every way. it would be a great first step to an all electric aircraft, just as hybrid cars were a precursor to all electric vehicles.
