For a senior golf like me, it's hybrids, all the way. I carry Cobra 3 and 4. If I need to hit something low, say under a tree, I still carry a 5 iron. But the hybrids fly so far and so high, it's unreal. Probably the greatest innovation in golf clubs in decades.
@sk8mattgaming2597 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Even as a young guy I just prefer hybrids.
@patrikstreng68347 жыл бұрын
indeed, for lower swing speeds the hybrid is king I myself bag a 3 wood at 14.5, 5 wood at 18 and then the 4 iron. toe and heel strikes don't travel nearly as far as on the hybrid but if I hit out of the middle, I can get it straight and 185m carry.
@Reavix16 жыл бұрын
personally i've not really "felt" the love of hybrids as of yet, i might add one to my bag, but as i see it right now, i don't see the need, in most situations i'd give my hybrid shots to my 3 wood, if the lie is terrible, the 4 iron is just a hands down better choice, so im struggling to see the hybrids "benefits".
@golfgod10175 жыл бұрын
...I'm pretty sure they had 3 and 5 woods "decades" ago. Just not cool and trendy enoigh for mamy people to buy and play. And probably the shafts wete uncomfortably long as well.
@golfgod10175 жыл бұрын
un your hypothesis about the wider base being more forgiving is nonsense. Complete nonsense. In fact it is even less forgiving than an iron. The guiding principle is mass therefore momentum. The wider base keeps the club from sinking easily into loosely packed grass like an iron but it is much more likely to bounce on thin grass and hardpack than an iron would. That bounce isn't forgiving, it completely destroys control of the ball. It's just like trying to hiy a driver off the fairway. The idea works a lot better if you have an inch or so of rough to play off of and there the momentum advantage is clear. I doubt that anyone with a decent handicap would rather play hybrids off the deck than irons when hazard is in reach...even then it's still like playing a high iron not a high wood.

Great video, Rick! I am yet to get on the hybrid hype train. All I have ever heard is how they are easier to hit and more forgiving. Seeing your side-by-side comparison helps make sense as to why. It also supports my compelling argument of having more workability on the course with a long iron. I may add one to my bag as a rescue club for shots of the rough, although I try to avoid those as much as possible. However, as long as I can continue to grip it and rip it with good club head speed, I will stick with my long irons. What's amazing to me is how many new club sets today exclude long irons and replace them with hybrids. There is definitely a shift towards the hybrids, which I believe is somewhat unfortunate in that it changes an iconic element of the game. While long irons can be challenging to hit, once you gain the knowledge and confidence in proper technique and can leave yourself with a wedge shot or a chip and a putt on a long par 5, one may question the benefit of having a set of hybrids to replace them.

The hybrids are inferiour to irons in a rough, except if you're a sweeper and you're not supposed to sweep, you're supposed to hit down on the ball, that's how you improve your game.

This really depends on how much club head speed you have. If you are swinging 100+ mph yes use a long Iron. Most people are not in this category and can use the extra power that a Hybrid gives them. Even in the rough.

It depends on course and weather conditions. I use Apex UT 18 degree in windy conditions or courses with tight fairways. I swap out the apex UT for a 19 degree hybrid in calm winds and courses with elevated greens or greens with a lot of slope. I carry 4 wedges so I usually have to make a decision on which one to put in the bag based on the conditions that particular day.

Approaching senior hood, I replaced my 3 4 5 irons with appropriate hybrids. Club head speed is down, hybrids can cut through the rough when needed. I can still work hybrids to fade or draw also. Hybrids for me makes golf more enjoyable now.

I think it's nice to have options and for that reason I carry a 4-iron and a 19 degree hybrid. The hybrid is an excellent club off the tee on short par 4s out of light rough and when you need a high approach. It can also be used for long chips in preference to a putter or wedge. It is of less use on links, hilly or heartland courses into a head wind or cross wind. The 4-iron's lower ball flight is a better option. I also find the 4-iron useful for chipping below tree branches.

Good stuff Rick! I'm a low handicapper that has always struggled with hybrids going way to high, but I've used them over the years for the additional help that they provide. Based on one of your reviews, I started using an Adams Dhy 21 degree driving iron and it is AWESOME. It still is confidence inspiring because of the shape, but it doesn't balloon up like the hybrids I've used in the past. It has worked so well that I might replace my 3 wood with the 18 degree model, if I can find one!

Thank you for this lecture as it was informative for me. At 70 years of age and starting to pay golf again after 3 previous starts, I have learned to play well with the hybrids. My swing speed is not much over 70 on a good swing but I am able to get my hybrids to run far and so I find myself in good positions to continue down the fairway. My long irons would make me antisocial manytimes. I use my 2 ironwood from Tour Edge to often run my ball up to the green anytime I am within 160 yards from the green or off the tee to the green making use of the long roll I get up on the green. This eliminates the high shots from my 6 or 7 irons that can go off to the left or right of center green and fly anywhere if bouncing on rough terrain. I find my long 1 or 2 iron very effective to run the ball up on the green from 30 yards out if much of the path is level. I also attack sand traps infront of the greens with my long 2 iron as the ball runs into and then up over the lip when there is no hanging lip to trap the ball. My game has really improved with my woods and hybrids as I strike them very much the same way. Las Vegas Duffer Joel

I have a 3 hybrid, I hit it more reliably and further than my 3 iron. That's where I draw the line though, my 4 iron is a great club no reason not to hit it. I only carry a Driver and 3 wood, so the extra distance of the 3 hybrid kind of fills a distance gap. I have 4 wedges in the bag, having much smaller gaps in distance on the shorter clubs has worked well for me.
@Reavix16 жыл бұрын
What iron tech are you running with? If you have older tech irons i can see that happending, but no way in hell you should be taking the range of a 3 iron out to a hybrid, except if you got aged irons or a slow speed.
@benvw75336 жыл бұрын
Hi, i thought I could chime in. I am currently using Cobra Tech Forged irons(which are awesome) 3-PW, but I do use a Cobra F7 3 hybrid instead of my 3 iron most of the time. Although I have plenty of speed and enjoy the feel of a pure strike with my 3 iron, the added forgiveness of a hybrid helps consistency which affects my score. That said, I will use my 3 iron in windy conditions because it is easier to keep the ball flight down. To add, the steeper angle of attack with hybrids makes holding greens much easier.

90-100 mph clubhead speed on a 4 iron is tour pro speeds, so based on your criteria, only tour pros should hit long irons. I love how far I can hit a hybrid, but I tend to hook them. I have to concentrate like hell to hold off on the release to get it to go straight. If I swing just a bit aggressively, banana ball left. My 5 iron I love (new Callaway Apex CF19). I am considering getting a 4 iron for the set because I can go after the 5 iron and hit it 190 with not hook, plus I can shape it like I want (sometimes). Great video Rick. Keep em coming!

I could shape a hybrid left to right but keeping it down (low shot) was harder. So it didn't blend in with rest of my set. A driving iron with lighter and or softer steel shaft gives you the best of both worlds in my opinion.

I love hybrids for the sound and added length (the longer shaft, in general, for a given loft helps) but they are reacting, for me, more like woods... I tend to draw my irons and fade (or even slice) the woods, and I find that my hybrid shots tend to largely favour the right.

I bought new and easier irons with a tad less weight on the shaft which helped me especially with long irons as it's kind of a hybrid set with more weight on the bottom of the long irons. With the new ones I can get them easily up in the air. Now I love my five and four irons! I do use a hybrid too though - my current hybrid is 18 degrees and works wonders between 4i and 3wood. Ball back in stance (closer to middle then forward) for a steeper attack angle. Id also choke up a tpuch to bring my stance closer to the ball- and a slighlty open face due to the long grass wanting to close it as you cut through tp the ball, so aiming just left of target. All these conditions and staying down on the ball would also lend to an abbreviated follow through. In the deep grass picture hitting a punch shot

A part of me would like to say I prefer the long iron over a hybrid due to the aforementioned varied height control... But I don't have the swing speed for a long iron so I essentially have to go hybrid, lol! Like, I've been in situations where a tree is in front of me and I'd like to hit it low... but it just doesn't happen with a hybrid (unless you blade it I guess.). So I'll have to take my longest iron for such a shot, which wouldn't go as far as an equivalent long iron. So hybrids definitely lack versatility in comparison to an iron, though when I think about it, I probably wouldn't make the green in the situations a tree is in my way anyway, so probability-wise it seems like I'd be better off in more situations with a hybrid in place of a long iron as the height is useful for holding greens.

As seniors, 16 hdcp - Going beyond the mechanics and club differences, when we have to hit it over alot of water, we have more confidence with hybrids in our hands. Plus it's even easier for us to hit a half-swing on a hybrid than a 7 iron. p.s. how to build confidence would make for a good golf video - as confidence translates to solid contact

This tip transformed both my 4 iron and hybrid shots at the range tonight. I could hear 2 guys muttering how good the ball flight was. Then I changed the ball position for all my irons to just left of center and KAPOW. The 2 guys stopped hitting balls, and I'm a 19 hcap, haha. Thanks Rick. and please say hello to Michael Thomas will you.

Always chose hybrid over 5 & 6 iron until I got fitted for my clubs last year. Still use hybrid but 5 Iron has become one of my favourite.

My friend gave me a Callaway Diablo hybrid that he put on a 7 iron steel shaft. Best rescue club in my bag!

I love hybrids. You can use them for sooo many different shots. I carry a 2 and a 3 hybrid as well as a 4 iron...nothing beats them for me on a 210- 230 approach shot :)

I carry an RSI UDI #3 and hit it very well. I do carry a 3H for the rough only.
