For a senior golf like me, it's hybrids, all the way. I carry Cobra 3 and 4. If I need to hit something low, say under a tree, I still carry a 5 iron. But the hybrids fly so far and so high, it's unreal. Probably the greatest innovation in golf clubs in decades.

Agreed. Even as a young guy I just prefer hybrids.
@patrikstreng6834

indeed, for lower swing speeds the hybrid is king I myself bag a 3 wood at 14.5, 5 wood at 18 and then the 4 iron. toe and heel strikes don't travel nearly as far as on the hybrid but if I hit out of the middle, I can get it straight and 185m carry.

personally i've not really "felt" the love of hybrids as of yet, i might add one to my bag, but as i see it right now, i don't see the need, in most situations i'd give my hybrid shots to my 3 wood, if the lie is terrible, the 4 iron is just a hands down better choice, so im struggling to see the hybrids "benefits".

un your hypothesis about the wider base being more forgiving is nonsense. Complete nonsense. In fact it is even less forgiving than an iron. The guiding principle is mass therefore momentum. The wider base keeps the club from sinking easily into loosely packed grass like an iron but it is much more likely to bounce on thin grass and hardpack than an iron would. That bounce isn't forgiving, it completely destroys control of the ball. It's just like trying to hiy a driver off the fairway. The idea works a lot better if you have an inch or so of rough to play off of and there the momentum advantage is clear. I doubt that anyone with a decent handicap would rather play hybrids off the deck than irons when hazard is in reach...even then it's still like playing a high iron not a high wood.

It depends on course and weather conditions. I use Apex UT 18 degree in windy conditions or courses with tight fairways. I swap out the apex UT for a 19 degree hybrid in calm winds and courses with elevated greens or greens with a lot of slope. I carry 4 wedges so I usually have to make a decision on which one to put in the bag based on the conditions that particular day.

I just started playing golf. Mostly on the driving range. I find myself having better shots with irons. I have one 3wood and one hybrid. Those are harder for me to hit. I also find that I hit the 3iron as long as my driver. So I know my driver technique is not as good. Thanks for all the videos. They really do help even for beginners.

This really depends on how much club head speed you have. If you are swinging 100+ mph yes use a long Iron. Most people are not in this category and can use the extra power that a Hybrid gives them. Even in the rough.

I think it's nice to have options and for that reason I carry a 4-iron and a 19 degree hybrid. The hybrid is an excellent club off the tee on short par 4s out of light rough and when you need a high approach. It can also be used for long chips in preference to a putter or wedge. It is of less use on links, hilly or heartland courses into a head wind or cross wind. The 4-iron's lower ball flight is a better option. I also find the 4-iron useful for chipping below tree branches.

I have a 3 hybrid, I hit it more reliably and further than my 3 iron. That's where I draw the line though, my 4 iron is a great club no reason not to hit it. I only carry a Driver and 3 wood, so the extra distance of the 3 hybrid kind of fills a distance gap. I have 4 wedges in the bag, having much smaller gaps in distance on the shorter clubs has worked well for me.

What iron tech are you running with? If you have older tech irons i can see that happending, but no way in hell you should be taking the range of a 3 iron out to a hybrid, except if you got aged irons or a slow speed.

Hi, i thought I could chime in. I am currently using Cobra Tech Forged irons(which are awesome) 3-PW, but I do use a Cobra F7 3 hybrid instead of my 3 iron most of the time. Although I have plenty of speed and enjoy the feel of a pure strike with my 3 iron, the added forgiveness of a hybrid helps consistency which affects my score. That said, I will use my 3 iron in windy conditions because it is easier to keep the ball flight down. To add, the steeper angle of attack with hybrids makes holding greens much easier.

I started playing golf at age 12, with a set of "women's" clubs, at a course with 1/4" topsoil over rock, and often dry fairways. The three wood (not a hybrid) had a long whippy shaft. The club head had a very convex face. Lets just say, I learned to hit long irons pretty quickly.

Good stuff Rick! I'm a low handicapper that has always struggled with hybrids going way to high, but I've used them over the years for the additional help that they provide. Based on one of your reviews, I started using an Adams Dhy 21 degree driving iron and it is AWESOME. It still is confidence inspiring because of the shape, but it doesn't balloon up like the hybrids I've used in the past. It has worked so well that I might replace my 3 wood with the 18 degree model, if I can find one!

90-100 mph clubhead speed on a 4 iron is tour pro speeds, so based on your criteria, only tour pros should hit long irons. I love how far I can hit a hybrid, but I tend to hook them. I have to concentrate like hell to hold off on the release to get it to go straight. If I swing just a bit aggressively, banana ball left. My 5 iron I love (new Callaway Apex CF19). I am considering getting a 4 iron for the set because I can go after the 5 iron and hit it 190 with not hook, plus I can shape it like I want (sometimes). Great video Rick. Keep em coming!

Thank you for this lecture as it was informative for me. At 70 years of age and starting to pay golf again after 3 previous starts, I have learned to play well with the hybrids. My swing speed is not much over 70 on a good swing but I am able to get my hybrids to run far and so I find myself in good positions to continue down the fairway. My long irons would make me antisocial manytimes. I use my 2 ironwood from Tour Edge to often run my ball up to the green anytime I am within 160 yards from the green or off the tee to the green making use of the long roll I get up on the green. This eliminates the high shots from my 6 or 7 irons that can go off to the left or right of center green and fly anywhere if bouncing on rough terrain. I find my long 1 or 2 iron very effective to run the ball up on the green from 30 yards out if much of the path is level. I also attack sand traps infront of the greens with my long 2 iron as the ball runs into and then up over the lip when there is no hanging lip to trap the ball. My game has really improved with my woods and hybrids as I strike them very much the same way. Las Vegas Duffer Joel

Great video, Rick! I am yet to get on the hybrid hype train. All I have ever heard is how they are easier to hit and more forgiving. Seeing your side-by-side comparison helps make sense as to why. It also supports my compelling argument of having more workability on the course with a long iron. I may add one to my bag as a rescue club for shots of the rough, although I try to avoid those as much as possible. However, as long as I can continue to grip it and rip it with good club head speed, I will stick with my long irons. What's amazing to me is how many new club sets today exclude long irons and replace them with hybrids. There is definitely a shift towards the hybrids, which I believe is somewhat unfortunate in that it changes an iconic element of the game. While long irons can be challenging to hit, once you gain the knowledge and confidence in proper technique and can leave yourself with a wedge shot or a chip and a putt on a long par 5, one may question the benefit of having a set of hybrids to replace them.

Ball back in stance (closer to middle then forward) for a steeper attack angle. Id also choke up a tpuch to bring my stance closer to the ball- and a slighlty open face due to the long grass wanting to close it as you cut through tp the ball, so aiming just left of target. All these conditions and staying down on the ball would also lend to an abbreviated follow through. In the deep grass picture hitting a punch shot

I like driving irons like the Hi-Fli, 712 U, UDI, X-Utility etc., for the control and forgiveness. I had a few Adams "players" hybrids in the bag for a short while. I could shape a hybrid left to right but keeping it down (low shot) was harder. So it didn't blend in with rest of my set. A driving iron with lighter and or softer steel shaft gives you the best of both worlds in my opinion.

Hi Rick, good stuff as always. For a beginner, would you recommend long iron or hybrid really? I recon hybrids are easier to hit but what about the learning process? Even if I struggle for a while, ultimately learning to hit long irons should help my game overall, as it requires a more precise swing, so it should help me with my short iron strike as well ?

rick, it is my understanding that there are different levels of hybrids. I thought pro versions are available that offer more penetrating flight. also shafts can be swapped and fitted . I have several hybrids, favorite is a ping g25 3h which has a more penetrating flight for me. Can get it high or low. I have steelheads which seem to really launch high and are hard to flight down. Since I catch the rough often, I find the hybrids a great tool to get distance out of these situations. my 2 cents

The lowest iron I carry is a 5 iron. I used to carry a 3 and 4 iron but found them too difficult to hit consistently well and the ball flight was always low. I now have a 22 degree hybrid and am looking to add in a 19 degree hybrid soon. They are just easier to hit for me and provide more consistent results, plus they are a good club to hit on a long par 3 or a very short par 4.

Always chose hybrid over 5 & 6 iron until I got fitted for my clubs last year. Still use hybrid but 5 Iron has become one of my favourite.

Rick, I'd be interested in hearing how you think a hybrid reacts differently when played with the same strike method as the long iron. From the fairway or rough I typically play a hybrid with your first swing/position, (i.e. cover it more with a slight downward strike and small divot in front of the ball) and have good results. Is the hybrid ball flight lower? More spin? Just curious about the disadvantages of my method. Thanks. :)

I use a Titleist 3 & 5 hybrid to replace the 3 & 5 irons and it makes a huge difference for me. I was an 15 handicap now with these new clubs I'm down to a 10 handicap. However it really depends on the shot not so much the course. With an iron I feel much more control over the ball. With a hybrid it's mainly used for distance cause I can't put a back spin using a hybrid.

I love hybrids for the sound and added length (the longer shaft, in general, for a given loft helps) but they are reacting, for me, more like woods... I tend to draw my irons and fade (or even slice) the woods, and I find that my hybrid shots tend to largely favour the right.

I love my long irons. Used to routinely carry a 2I. I only found out my club head speed is ~ 93mph with my 6I. I have tried hybrids but find them less consistent & no ideal for windy links golf. Nice explanation Rick!

I generally carry a 21* Tour Edge Exotics CB Pro U hybrid, which I hit about 200-210 yards (203-204 yds average). However, when I play in windy conditions, or on certain golf courses with shortish par-4 holes that require precise accuracy off the tee, I replace it with a 21* “driving iron”. I can hit this driving iron almost the same distance as my 21* hybrid (about 198-200 yards vs. the 203-204 average with the 21* hybrid), but I am so darned accurate with the driving iron that it is my “safe club” off the tee.

As a 12ish Handicapper I have to say I much prefer my hybrids (I have the Rogue 3 and 4) over the long irons. It is my go for it in 2 or long par 3 club of choice because I can swing so much more freely.

I bought new and easier irons with a tad less weight on the shaft which helped me especially with long irons as it's kind of a hybrid set with more weight on the bottom of the long irons. With the new ones I can get them easily up in the air. Now I love my five and four irons! I do use a hybrid too though - my current hybrid is 18 degrees and works wonders between 4i and 3wood. I love to shape my shots with my hybrid. On an average day I can hit easily high, low, left, right etc. Nice vid though!

Run a 19 deg hybrid and a 712u 2i(18 deg). Hybrid is 90% used for rescuing fluffed drives out of the rough and the occasional long shot into a front protected green where i want the height and stop and its a bit soft to risk the 2i. Grew up playing in the winds of Aberdeenshire, so a penetrating ball flight from my long irons is what i prefer that and that low stinger you just cant get out of a hybrid.

Height into the green...especially in non-links golf, that is the strength of the hybrid. You can hit a hybrid low but it is "more game improvement/forgiving" thus harder when you want to work it in my experience. Now you just needed to squeeze in the new guy to the party, the Utility/Crossover. It is the part where most "fittings" seem a bit like magic: get your six iron, warm up, take data, pick the new club head you like, software spits out some shaft recommendations, try these find a combo and the software then "builds the bag".

I play on a windy course, and most people here play hybrids. If you play on a windy course, you get used to hitting a knock down, which you can do with a hybrid. I play Mizuno MPH4 3 iron and MP54 4 iron and have a 915H 3 hybrid. Irons are great when they go well, but I'm not too consistent with them. I would disagree with hybrids going the same distance tho. As you tend to hit them better/higher and they need less speed to get them away, in my experience, they go further.

I'm confused. You said in your pretty recent "How to Strike Long Irons" video to hit slightly up. Now your saying to hit slightly down. What's up with that?
@roxythepariah9914
@roxythepariah9914 7 жыл бұрын
he said to, just like a driver, hit on a slight upward angle so as the club passes it's point of which it's parallel to the ground, you then make contact therefore creating a slight upwards attack and helping you get the ball in the air same reason you do it with a driver. BUT if you're hitting a mid-short iron, you want the ball neural in your stance so you can get the leading edge under the ball and let the club do what it's designed to do (hit it high). hope this helps

Moo Trail I'm no teacher, but I hit all my irons the same. 3 to pw I'm hitting down at the ball. Naturally the higher lofted clubs take bigger divots just bc of the length of the shaft. I play my 2 hybrid the same as I play my irons.
@jakegaming818
@jakegaming818 6 жыл бұрын
All clubs are a downward strike except driver- hence no divot with the driver. As the clubs progressively gets longer ypu move it up in stance- so yes its more of an upward strike than trapping a wedge and taking a beaver pelt, but the divot following contact means its still a downward strike at the pinnacle of ypur swing bottoms out past the ball.. A driver bottoms out just before the ball

Any tips to hitting long irons a more consistent distance? My 4 can go anywhere between 205-230 and it makes it very hard to use it as anything other than a long lay up. For example, on some shorter par 5s I'd like to be able to use a 4 or 3 iron as an accurate shot at the green but since the distance isn't consistent it's hard to do so

What about the differences in club offset between the two. I find hybrids difficult to hit because i tend to hook them left. (I'm RH) I can't seem to hit them straight unless i take a exagerated fade swing. I also agree, they tend to balloon up, which isn't bad in calm conditions but is difficult in windy conditions.
