The Prius offers a lot more then just gas mileage. Like I have said before, there are more features in this car then what any car it's size even offers. With the Prius it's not just about gas. For the people who own one they know what I am talking about. Talking about the Prius and just talking about it's mpg is like talking about an Acura RL and only talking about it's mpg. There is so much more to the car then just mpg.

Diesel Electrics don't use a third rail. The diesel engine powers a generator that provides electric power to the motors that turn the wheels. This technology was first used in 1957. Most trains in North America are powered this way. They also use regenerative braking.

I know you don't realize this, but the 2004-2009 Prius, has twin reversible electric motors, with a max of 10,000rpm, that make 67hp & 295 lbs torque, that is powered by a 500 volt electric battery. It's not as slow as people think. The 04-09Prius basically has the power of a 2.5 Liter I-4, but gets twice the mileage. These cars weren't built for performance, they were built to be the most efficient, which they are. Your Monte Carlo was built for performance, which it isn't the best at.

If you're looking for a fuel efficient car to save money, I'll tell you the best new car sleeper deal on the market, the 2010 Hyundai Accent "Blue" model. Get the manual transmission with no a/c (if you can live without a/c, up here in Chicago that's pretty easy). I got mine for $9,100, $11,000 after taxes and fees. I'm getting 40 mpg in city driving, no highway miles. I imagine once I do get on the highway I'll be getting 45 mpg+.

I like the insight better looking more fun to drive I had a prius and felt like a retired grampa lol I'm 29 years old, passing the 150k miles mark the prius become a money pit with its more electric oriented design (try to find someone to work on a electric problem in a prius in Texas) the insight is more on the mechanical side so you get the best of both worlds

The same kind of brakes every other car has, but the electric motor helps stop the car as well. Which means the brakes don't have to work nearly as hard as others cars. Making them last way longer then other brakes. Because of this, the Prius has a lot of stopping power because of the electric motor, which by the way is very powerful, it makes the brakes and engine last way longer then in a normal car. The electric motor in the 07 Prius has 295 lb-ft of torque powered by a 500 volt battery.

The Prius offers some high-end features usually found only on vehicles sold by Toyota's Lexus division, including adaptive cruise control, Lane Keep Assist with lane-departure warning, and Intelligent Parking Assist that provides hands-free parallel parking. Other new options include a solar roof panel that can power a ventilating fan when the car is parked, and electric air conditioning that can be turned on for up to three minutes to cool down the interior before getting in.

@Rezxer The Prius Effect? I did not know that thanks. In the Insight the backlight shows green when you're driving efficiently and blue when you're not, not everyone like it but I do. And after every trip when you turn off the engine it'll show you the Eco score. If you drive efficiently in the long run it'll even award you with trophies LOL in 3 stages. Prius doesn't have that right? Prius and Insight don't look identical, they just have a similar aerodynamic shape and they're both hatchbacks.

I totally agree, here's another way of looking at it. A Yaris or some other small car costs 12 to 15 thousand. A hybrid costs 20 to thirty thousand. How much gas could you by for that extra, say, ten thousand dollars.

@RJL1981 nope sticker is 42K, but you can haggle down to 40K, government will pay 7.5K, most states pay from 2.5-7.5 K too. Here in Nebraska, the total price for a Nissan Leaf is $22,380 for the base and $24,810 for top of the line. The volt is $23,180 for the base and $25,189 for the top of the line.

For most normal drivers including myself, torque is more important than horsepower especially for hill climbing. For the version of Honda Insight in my country (which is from Japan itself), the combined torque is 199Nm which is quite amazing from such a small engine. The low end torque is very good. It's higher than many 1.6Litres or even 1.8/2.0Litres, 174Nm/188Nm (Civic). It takes around 10.4 seconds to reach 100km/hr as shown in part 2 of the video, beats Prius.

They are the same features that are found on luxury cars that cost anywhere from $45,000 Volvos to $130,000 Mercedes. It's is to prevent people from falling asleep at the wheel and driving off the highway or road and hurting or worse killing themselves. This happens a lot to people who have long commutes or a very long tip ahead of them.

Some people say the Toyota Prius is bad because of the recall that happened with the gas petal and the media making a hugh deal about it because they had nothing else to talk about back then. Before that no one had anything to say and most of the people that put the car down never even driven or owned one before. Most new and used cars has had recalls, big and small put out there about something. It's just the media doesn't have time to talk about each car. If they did no one would buy anything.

I don't hate people for the things they do. Just making fun of the people who make fun of what other people may like. And when I say people I don't mean every last one. Don't jump on me like you know me, because you don't. My wife owns the 07 Prius, I own a 2006 RL. Back in the day I loved hooking my TL's up, but it's gettin old to me. There are much better ways of spending thousands of dollars. A plastic kit that costs over 1K-3K installed could get you a very nice vacation in the world!

They have been known to last 361,000 miles before they started to ware out. That's way longer then I ever plan on keeping any car. The Prius is one of the easiest cars to maintain that I have ever seen. All you have to do is change the oil ($25) every 5,000 miles and at about 90,000 to 100,000 miles change the 4 spark plugs and transmission fluid. That's it! No high priced timing belt server like other cars, no belts to change, since it doesn't have any, you don't even have to change the brakes!

@ale03000 They're being compared because they're aiming for the same market -- those looking for fuel efficient hybrids. I believe Honda created the Insight specifically to compete with the Prius. Frankly, they would have done a better job if they had created some supply. Back around the time I was in the market for a new car, the Insight was damn near impossible to find...so the few around was ridiculously expensive.

I hate to see obviously poor people spending every last penny they make customizing cars that really aren't worth it, then beating the crap out of them, then getting piddles when they try to trade up. 71mpg is so efficient for how much I drive. The only thing I don't like it the back end of the Prius and how much it costs. I love the main difference between these. The hondas are gas with electric assist, and Toyota is electric with gas assist meaning in town they save you a whack load of money. I can't wait to get mine. I'm gettin a Tesla car after a Prius, but not the roadster. Thanks for readin and hope y'all get a Prius or something with 71mpg or close to it to help save our planet.

Yes, the part has been replaced, and I received a complimentary car wax plus a letter of apologies from the dealer. My wife's Malibu was not recalled but the transmission broke last month and she'll have to pay 2500$. I don't mind a safety recall, compared to a transmission that breaks on the highway at full speed after 44K miles. Nothing against GM, but I,m not impressed by some dork in a TV ad trying to convince me by smiling and saying 'trust me buy GM' 23 times in 30 seconds.

Gotta say, Honda is an interesting choice and it's a good value for the money. Doesn't drive badly. I think there's nothing wrong with it. Prius is, on the other hand, is fucking expensive. You can buy an entry level sedan with more fuel efficient diesel engine for that price. You can get car that doesn't compromise everything like Prius does. And it'll be greener as well. Hybrids are about as green as Hummer H2 in a long run.

@amoghthegamer I also want to point out that Toyota's hybrid system has the same warranty the Insight does. 8yrs/100k miles, that covers the battery, inverter, and all other hybrid components. A Prius starting at $23,000 still gets you more goodies, like smart entry & smart start, push button start, standard 7 airbags, including one for the drivers knee, 89g of Co2 per kilometer compared to 104g of Co2 for the Insight. For $2,000 more, I can get a larger car with more power, and better mpg.

@meesterbrian still was $22,995 so yeah $23K, they had only the Navi and the LX in stock. They needed to meet their quota for the end of the month so he sold me the Navi for $19 or the LX for $17, I took the Navi for resale value and it came with blue-tooth too. if you wait till the end of November that would be better so you can get a better price since they all will be trying to get their quota. you can definitely get the EX under $20K FOR SURE. just tell em you liked the Prius!!!!!

Honda's strategy is interesting: its new insight looks just like the last gen prius, gets about the same mileage as the last gen prius, except it costs 4-5k less while Toyota's improvement isn't on the price side but on the tech side. The new mpg is great, but seriously, the roof solar panel that can only work when you park and basically turn on the interior fans (recirculates air)...is a little gimmicky.

I had common rail diesel cars (small engines), now I want to buy a Honda hybrid...in my opinion, the common rail engine is very expensive, I spent a lot of money for devices that were breaking, injectors, injection pump, the coupons are also very expensive. The old diesel cars, that were more simple, were slower cars but more reliable. Too many devices around this modern common rail (the money I have saved with the advantages of diesel, I spent on assistance of car).

33 mpg on the highway... That sucks! My wife gets 55 mpg per tank, in her 2007 Prius. That's not highway or city, it's everywhere. The 2010 Prius is rated at 48 mpg on the highway and can go 600 miles on one tank of gas. But wait, there's more. You spend $40+ to fill that tank, while Prius owners only spend $25. Hell, her car was down to one bar of gas last week, and it wasn't even blinking yet, but I wanted to fill it for her. I had a $20 bill. That filled it up.

@MDIVISIONRULES That's true so long as the price of diesel is not significantly more expensive than gas/petrol, as it is here in the USA. I would have bought a Golf TDI instead of a Prius, but diesel is 50 cents a gallon more expensive, wiping out any savings. Furthermore, I am getting 54mpg (equivalent to 65mpg in Europe) from the Prius and the Golf would have returned only about 36mpg.

@Rezxer They are also different types of hybrids. Prius is a full hybrid (2 electric motors) and Insight is a mild hybrid (1 electric motor) and cost less. I personally love the Insight after driving it. It's like playing a game when driving it, it appeals even more to gamers like myself lol. Toyota's design is a little boring for me. That's normal because generally Toyotas appeal to older people while Hondas appeal to the younger ones. Thanks :].
@austinkinser

@amoghthegamer Plus, Honda has been having trouble with their batteries. The type of battery's all Honda hybrids have used are the very outdated D-Cell batteries, compared to the sealed modules that Toyota's been using since 2000. Plus, the Insight, along with any other Honda hybrid does not have a battery equalizer. So over time, your battery cells will get unbalanced which can lead to dead cells which also leads to cell replacement.

It didn't have 6 airbags and it basically had two seats...not 4 with 4 doors. As good a car as it was...it was a dinosaur compared to either of these. Also, are you sure about that 41/50? The only drawback to electric power is charge time. Materials science is nearly complete with eliminating that issue. The energy density of carbon nanotube based ultracapacitors promises unlimited charge cycles and extremely high energy densities. There was a recent breakthrough with lion batteries that show great promise. Fossil fuel powered vehicles don't stand a chance. If you did your homework, you'd know that.

Honda's warranty is a 100K/10 year warranty instead of Toyota's 5 year/60K warranty. The downside of the Insights are: -only 42.2 MPG instead of 48 MPG of the Prius.

I noticed you didn't answer the question. I didn't think you would. It may come as a shock to but not every car on the road is built for performance. I mean the Prius is pretty much a family car that is not geared for young people with a need for speed. If you are going to hate a car because it is not built for speed then you have a lot of hating to do. The Prius goes as fast as most 4 bangers, yet gets twice the mileage. Two weeks worth of gas for you would last the Prius more then a month

0-108mph. The acceleration is only poor from a start. That's because from a stop the car has more then enough power to make the wheels spin, and the VSA will never let that happen, so it prevents any and all wheel spin killing acceleration from a start. That's why the 0-60 (9.5sec) time suck. Case in point, I was doing 40mph behind a minivan in a 50mph zone, so I floored it to go around it and by the time I got back in the lane infront of the minivan I was doing 75mph. That's a 2007 Prius.

Plus, the Prius has 134hp where as the Honda has 98hp, I live in West Virginia where I've driven the Insight and the 1.3L engine shows a noisy side because it doesn't have a big electric motor to help out. Plus, with Honda's hybrid system, you can only create or consume electricity, where the Prius can do both.

mustangs and camaros costs much less than 42.645 usd . It's not my fault if GM,Ford and Chrysler don't put an hybrid engine into these cars improving their mpg. Take the look of a nice car and put an efficent engine into it and you will have the best of both world: beauty with intelligence!

it's statements like that that hold ecological advancements back...... no it wont "save the earth alone" but it is part of effort.... part of the many things we can do to help...

EPA numbers don't reflect the Insight's real-life mileage numbers. Many reviews have gotten near-Prius economy from the Insight.

is it true that the batteries in these cars are polluting the environment? and needs the car to travel at least 45000 miles to be at the break even?

priuses are not as ecofriendly as toyota commercials claim. the manufacturing of the batteries (harvesting, shipping, assembly, etc) causes the production of a single prius to give off more pollution than even that of a hummer. look it up

@misterbear1984 When it comes to value, a Hyundai Accent will pretty much smash any car. A 2005 Hyundai Accent goes for about $5K, has a combined MPG of 35, and retains 28% of its value after five years. After the Accent, though, a Honda Civic will win out. Unlike the Accent, it also has an automatic version and is a hell of a lot easier to find. In a choice between the Insight and the Prius, I'd probably choose the Insight, but there are definitely better cars in the fight for value.

Oh by the way, over the last 6,000 miles, my wife's 2007 Prius has gotten 54.7 mpg. Basically, that means $23 to drive 500 miles. How much does it cost you to drive 500 miles? $60? $70? $80? Im not talking about filling your tank ether... Im talking about 500 miles, which would be about two tank fulls in a Monte Carlo.
