This marks the no less than 10th time in the past month that one of your videos has seriously helped me in my chem/biochem classes I'm in. Your explanations are invariably easy to understand, logical, and succinct. It's a skill not all instructors have and man you're good. Thank you for your time and effort. Subbed for life.

Always wanted a clear explanation for hybridization. So one of the electrons in the 2s shell moves to the 2p shell allowing the H to attach....WOW will have to watch this a few times to rap my head around this.. May i ask that you do another explanation with other chemical bonds starting with SP then SP2 and ending with Sp3 for clarity? Yes this will take time and i respect your investment to all your viewers (me too). Thank you Dr. B :)

It's interesting that I didn't really understand hybridization very deeply in college. So it took a while to be able to competently teach it in a video. I'm hoping to do some compounds with double and triple bonds in the near future. The overlap of the pi bonds can be tough to visualize. This video out of Dartmouth College is actually very well done (although a bit cheesy with some of the sound effects) if you have a chance: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYHakH95ot6dpKs

Why is it written as 2sp^3? I understood that it is incorrect to write it like that, and only indicate it as sp^3, I searched in several books and they only indicate sp^3 at the time of hybridization. Another question is, if the electronic configuration of hybridization exists, for example for this case it would be 1s^2 (sp^3)^1 (sp^3)^1 (sp^3)^1 (sp^3)^ 1 = 1s^2 (sp^3)^4? If so, is there an electron configuration of a "compound" and not an atom, like methane

Great explanation and that too within 4 mins ! Thanks for the video. I have one question though. When we excited the electron from 2s orbital to 2p orbital , how did we change its spin ? Isnt it the characteristic property of each electron ?
@Suhani-zs8sx3 жыл бұрын
We didn't change the spin for carbon but they are already existing there with the opposite spin than hydrogen so we can consider any spin but the condition is that they should be opposite only then they would form the bond

Hey I had a doubt, if s orbital is spherical in shape, why do we represent it has a lobe here?
@wbreslyn Жыл бұрын
The s orbitals are spherical. But with hybridization we mix the s and p orbitals. So we get mixed shape.

Hello , I have a question , Why are we using ideal gas laws or using kinetic molecular theory , if ideal gases do not exist ? Does that equations and that theory help us to describe the behavior of real gases too ? If yes , how??
@wbreslyn4 жыл бұрын
Good question. We can expand on the ideal gas law so that it accurately describes non-ideal gases. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_der_Waals_equation

@@wbreslyn but can’t we describe the behavior of real gases without using the ideal gas equations ? Why is it important to first know the ideal gas equations ?? We could describe the real gas behavior on our experiment , with what are helping the ideal gas equations ?
@wbreslyn4 жыл бұрын
@@mikayelhovhannisyan9445 I suppose it depends on what you want to describe. You could use Boyle's or Charles's laws. These are even more basic. The more advanced equations are elaborations on these simpler laws. So it is helpful from a learning perspective to start with the simple and go from there.
@lightcapmath27774 жыл бұрын
@@mikayelhovhannisyan9445 Br B, Wayne gave a explanation to why. Now ask your teacher. in short the IDG law make calculations easier and offers a close approximate to the unknown you are looking for. best to you.

Mmmm. I was wondering why hybridize carbon?
@wbreslyn4 жыл бұрын
One big reason is that it helps us explain what we find from experiments in the lab. Without hybridization we would expect Methane (CH4) to be CH2. But this isn't what we find from experiments.
