Back to watching takeoff and landings in Star Citizen. This time in SC's version of Coruscant at Area18, ArcCorp. The city planet has some of the best look visuals as you come in to land which make make it quite the breath taking backdrop for pilots coming in to land. Maybe all that distracting beauty is why some pilots more that others tend to have issues landing here? Either way, let's see how folks do today.

Day 29123 of me asking for CIG to put rain on ArcCorp. Which ship do you personally find the most fun to land with on a planet? Me personally, I love the RAFT with those articulating VTOLs that sound so chonky! ~~SPOILERS~~ At 8:55 completely forgot to say what my score for the Carrack was because I got excited when I heard another ship come in XD my score for it was going to be a 5 out of 10 for early gear extension and multiple impacts with the hangar. And yes, the Retaliator gets its high score because I have too much love for that ship. Its my show, deal with it :D Realistically, it would have gotten a 6 for early gear deployment and a rough touchdown. See you all in the next one. o7

One of my personal favourites to fly is the Retaliator. She is in a bad spot at the moment, long overdue for the update, but the ship looks awesome, VTOLS look like they would work, and hopefully should be a dream with control surfaces. I'm hopeful the MM pass might be good to her, but we will have to wait and see...

17:14 I think you misspoke here, vector hold mode is activated by having gear down + being in decoupled mode, proximity doesn't factor in. I use it all the time with dual sticks and it's awesome, my genuine favorite of the 3 flight modes. I agree the gear down look isn't as nice all the time, but it's way better for landing in gravity environments. (Maybe we can get CIG to make Vector Hold Mode a key-bindable thing.)

Yeah, not sure why it cannot be separate from landing gear mode. Can land at the external pads at GH using decoupled and since no gravity, you do not need vector mode to keep you from falling. Hit the landing mode button cinematically when close to the ground and just continue the glide in. Used to do it on every landing at PO. Every station needs a quick in/out landing pad like GH. Would be cool if CIG made an impound hangar. So if people land at those 10 minute or less spots and then do not move, the no fly zone AI just flies ship to the impound hangar and disappears the ship so you cannot see stuff blink out of the verse, which Chris hates.

A thought, If the landing pad itself wiuld be on a scissor lift as on an Air Craft Carrier lifting up while waiting for the ship and lower after all is done. Second thought is the outer of the landing area had neon lights tubs or bulbs around it when your assigned a hanger.

Yup, I have been saying that since Chris announced he wanted to remove all external landing pads at stations and large landing zones. Nothing can blink in or out of the verse. Still waiting for that to be the case for ground vehicles at mining outposts. The only problem they would need to do is to keep ships from landing so that they are hanging over the edge like when landing on the 890. Would make it more cinematic to me as well. You can land and then get out and ride the elevator down as the doors close above you. Would have allowed PO to stay as well. Just beef up the area below the pads and you would have the hangar below the existing pads. Not sure about physical neon lights around all the hangars incase more than 1 person is landing at a time. But the HUD indicator could be a bit more dramatic than a tiny chevron and faint blue landing pad square. Wish it would be dynamic. When chevron appears make it a graduated column of that blue square, light at top maybe 30m above the pad and get more intense at bottom, helps you know which way is up depending on where you are landing if it is pitch black like sometimes.

How many times do you see commercial planes lower their gear just before they land? Might be a stuck button.

yeah, if my pilot waited until 100ft above the ground to deploy gear, I would be a bit talkative when getting off the plane. They have gear down on the downwind. Get the plane dirty before you get to the base leg. Can't be throwing out gear and flaps last second when on approach as it totally changes the aerodynamics of a plane.

I'm glad I found this channel/video it's awesome and kinda funny haha. @HybridVAudio - suggestion: But now I have an idea of taking this video style and going the ESPN/eSports level of commentating where you'd have a guest commentator on your show who has as much experience as you when it comes to flying. It would be hilarious and yet informative to hear you both be bouncing the commentary/casting off each other to keep commentary momentum (not that you are not doing that here - I think you did a fantastic job!). Now I want to create a really detailed list of things to add/dock points for!! It would also be a fun idea to incorporate Star Citizen themed advertisements in between each extended wait per player landing. You'd segway in like "alright as we wait for another player, we'd like to thank our sponsors over at Cubby Blast" or something like that and roll some still images of players shooting guns or shopping lol.

Pisces is the best for taking off. In most cases, you can already blast through the hangar doors with afterburner when they are not even 50% open. Always fun to do on Microtech, and the pull straight up to the sky.

One thing I love to do when coming in for a landing is lowering my thrust limiter to roughly 50%, as that will cause my ship to gently fall onto the landing pad rather than the slight jerkiness of pushing down on my vertical thrusters

i guess it would cost me some points, but you can land nose first with almost all ships in every hangar, even the ground hangars. just center your ship over it, enter nose first and pull it up when inside the hangar. works great and you have much more control and vision. no need to use 3rd person at all.

Love your videos of watching take offs and landings, and your running commentary as well. Great fun to hear you judge the finer details of landings and take offs, and it makes me more away of my own take offs and landings. Only been playing for about a month and I've not even been aware yet of using the VTOL function of my ships. Guess I need to practice more and keep the points rating in mind for my own take offs and landings. 🙂 Curious though, @HybridVAudio , do you make these videos on the US servers or on the EU servers?

I landed in a 180 degree turn and cut the engines like a SQUAD helicopter pilot in my C2 the other day and was disappointed that no one saw it

Normally you can strafe up (space bar) and clear a vertical hanger, except with a Spirt. For some unknown reason it strafes back slightly, causing its tail to catch the hangers edge. I don't use Autoland (unless I have a mult-million aUEC load) and try to avoid using 3rd person (for immersion), but I got to try Vector landing. Sometimes I do a Solo/Mos-Eisley launch or a Harrier shot launch (lift off, stop, raise gear, pitch up, raise VTOL/if equipped, blast off). ;-)

You can hold vector without having gear down... light up thrust on left stick. I do it all the time.

Still disagree that landing gesr should be down only seconds before touchdown :D but it should be one fluid movement. Pilots have enough to do without having to remember the gear while manouvering into Spaces only tiny bit bigger than the ships :D

@@Traumglanz Nah I'm with phoenixsui on this one. VTOL craft irl have their gear down 20-30 seconds before landing. Hybrid may call it "not cinematic" but in reality you'd want to deploy gear WELL before landing just incase of possible gear malfunctions so you can abort the landing if needed.

I have to admit that *when* I turn on VTOL depends on the ship. If I'm on a planet or moon, the bigger the ship, the sooner I'll engage VTOL. Basically, as soon as I'm coming in and leveling off, I'll engage VTOL. Your videos have made me more mindful of engaging landing gear. Though in bad weather or the middle of the night, I'll lower the landing gear at about the point an Airbus would and less so a Naboo yacht. And now, especially if it's a front-facing hangar, I'm more inclined towards a more graceful, parabolic ascent rather than exiting and immediately pulling up. I agree with you 100% about the Spirit though. WTH CIG? When cargo hangars are a thing, how are we supposed to load that?

If you were to spot me landing you would think I’m about to crash at first, I always come in extremely hot into hangars in area 18 (mostly if it’s the horizontal ones), but it just feels cool even though sometimes I over shoot.

Lately my landings have become a bit more reckless... I lower the landing gear just before the ground and then switch off the engines while I'm in the air.I call them "Nofly landing" I've found that the HERC's can easily handle it, but it's a no go for the Conni's.

I've got to say it... Given that a 5/10 would be "average", I don't think an auto-land can ever be an above average landing. Others may disagree, and that's fine, but personally I just can't rate them any higher than a 5 if they use auto-land

I think some of these Landings should deserve a higher score despite the fact they hesitated slightly. I think what's happening is most of these people with small slight hesitations are flying mouse and keyboard. In order to bring up your landing gear or switch your view or anything like that they have to remove their hand from their thrust button in order to perform that action I don't have to do that because I have dual sticks so I feel like some of these ratings might be slightly unfair.

Megafortress was also a nice bomber simulator, i have it on 3.5 and 5.25" floppy. To me the mouse wheel is bit meh, i can have my Andromeda do 30ms i move the mouse wheel down one notch and i get 0, makes it hard to get the smooth landing, 30ms going into a hangar is damn fast :)

Dude, you gotta pay more attention to the small details. The first ship was called wrong: said it was perfect when they were in Vtol for the last half of the ascent. And the Connie Taurus: they brought the gear up just after getting out of the hangar which also closes the vtol fans. You dinged them for both putting the gear up late, and closing the VTOL too early... so it was self contradictory
