Yea I think the slosh is just an exaggerated factor the devs have put in to make life hard running steam locos bc you have to manage water and coal more burning through both extra quick so you have a thrill of coming into a station with a completely empty tender I guess. No matter what hill I’ve been on with either steam loco, if I don’t have water in the sight glass at any grade I’ve ended up going to boom town. 😂

The glass was filled to full, but with the glimpses of the water glass right before the hill, it looks like it got down to somewhere between a half and 3/4, so I guess it was a combination of the engine working hard on the hill and the water sloshing forward to drain the water.

there was a fun parking brake incident at a London train station a few years back. Was an engineering train during maintenance work, Class 66 diesel-electric, made by EMD. Driver hit the "apply parking brake" button and then shut the whole loco down, clocked off, and went home. Several hours later, the train ran away across the station throat. drivers now carefully advised to note it takes several seconds for the motorised parking brake to apply, and they should not be too hasty about hitting the battery cutoff switch while it's in motion…

Putting the lantern on the other pad (the one on the engineers side) does a better job of illuminating the important stuff. It hits the water glass better, plus the speddometer and the cutoff. Realistically, putting it there makes the 282 one of the best lit cabs in the game in my opinion. P.S. Have been waiting for this video, you did not disappoint :) P.P.S. - The 282's crownsheet is exposed when the water glass is empty and then has a very short heat up period before it fails.

I can confirm that cars out of frame still have physics. I can confirm this after an..... ah..... incident. Left my consist on the grade before a switch to run past the switch (down the wrong leg for where the consist needed to go) to top up on water in the S282.... had a...... minor runaway incident when dropping the cars, turns out I did not, in fact, close the regulator, but pulled it wide open..... so..... about 20 minutes of running after the thing later I finally caught up to it when it met an uphill grade and slowed down, thankfully I'd left the johnson bar barely forward of center, else I'da had no chance. Anyways, I'm limping the thing back to where I needed to be to get water on just the pressure left in the boiler, as I've long since dumped the fire due to lack of water, just wondering if I'ma make it, nearly there, and the next thing I know the cars I left on the grade decided to come say hi at mach 10. Turns out I didn't set any handbrakes, cos I was trying to be quick before my loco got too far away for me to catch (yeah, that worked well) and figured the airbrakes would hold them. Of course, I also thought I'd be hooking the loco back up in only a couple of minutes...... So, yes, can confirm the brakes do bleed down over time and eventually release, and that all this simulation is going on even while you're miles away.

Ive played a lot with the DH4, and honestly its my favorite locomotive currently in the game. Anyway, the gauge with the RPMs with the white and red needle? When they are super far apart its actually better to throttle down to bring the engine rpm (the white needle) closer to the red one and it will give more power. You dont want to go to far down or the automatic transmission will kick it in to a lower gear and you lose your power. But after 80 hours driving those Ive just noticed that if they are far apart then increasing throttle only creates more heat rather than more power. My theory on this is since it works by spinning the case oil, if the engine is spinning above a certain difference in RPM, then its creating more turbulence in the oil thats actively disrupting the transmission of the power. To note I dont know much about DHs Im just going on my experiences with driving the DH4, and pushing them to their limits constantly. BTW, they can each pull arounf 750 tons so 2 of them can pull around 1500 tons so that 1050 ton train was fairly easy for those two units

Ive had the exact opposite experience with the DH4s Guess it depends on your definition of "power," but you get more torque the further apart the needles are and more speed the closer they are. Says so in the tutorial. Makes it one of the few locos where "straight to 8" is a good idea. They may be able to move 700T on flat ground but have nothing on DM3s once you have to hit any significant grade. The DH4 only has an effective TE of 550T on grade, whereas one DM3 in 1st gear can do over 900t on grade. 2 DM3s out of OWC can even out pull hyce's baby, the 282. If going fast is power, then sure, the DH4 is great for that. You can keep those needles close together, and it'll shift up to some pretty dangerous speeds. But in my eyes, "go fast" has nothing on pulling the entire planet early game with a DM3 while sounding like a big rig on rails.

Hm. I'll have to experiment with that. Thanks man!

@callsignapollo7804 well I mean less slippage and the ability to drag stuff up a hill. I've seriously put a lot of hours in to playing with the DH4 and pushing it to its limits. I fin that keeping them closer when trying to start or maintain slow speed on heavy loads, like at the limit loads, it works better than keeping it at 8 when it's struggling. Yeah I do normally put it straight to 8 to start but then I dial it back and modulate the stick to keep the needles within about 15-20° of each other

I've blown 4 steamers up so far, and each one was while I was throwing cinders out the stack and pushing them real hard. Had water in the glass and everything. Admittedly it was on the lower end, but still. Unless I've been doing something really wrong. I've just stopped pushing them as hard. Water lasts longer too.
